Not worth the price

So, we unfortunately got off on the wrong foot with this campground. It was likely our error, but we did not see anywhere in the booking process that there would be additional fees once we arrive at the campground. This is the only campground we have had this experience with too. This made the nightly rate a lot higher than what it was worth. Yes, the lake is nice, but you are right by a busy road and there is road noise all day and night long. Also, you aren’t on the main part of the lake– more like a little inlet off the main part. The facilities were fine and our site did have a good view of the sliver of the lake. However, if we find ourselves in the area again we will find somewhere else to stay. They did have some sites that you can tie a boat up to. If we had a boat I can see where this would be super fun having it tied up right at your RV site, but without a boat I would check around.

Great views but can be very windy at times

Very few campsites at Carter Knolls Campground. A few individual sites into group sites. This Campground is perfect for viewing the entire spance of Carter Lake. No wash facilities and only dry outhouses. Easy walk to the lake but be careful as there are Cliffs on the southwest side of the campground. The sunsets are amazing! Plenty of deer and Wildlife to view from this vantage point. We even found a few skinks roaming about the rocks. Great place to kick back with a glass of wine and some music. Add a hammock and you're in heaven. The road leading up to the campsites could use some Road improvements. Many folks drove through our campsite without knowing it was a one way Road.

Awesome!

It was late October when I stayed here, so there were plenty of sites to choose from even though only a few loops were open. This campground is managed by NPS and open year-round, but do note that if you visit in the summer, all of the sites are reservable and fill up nearly every night. During the winter there are 64 first-come, first-served sites. Plan accordingly! Overall it was clean, quiet and affordable. The official park website is always the best place to check for the most up to date information on campground fees, closures, etc. Compared to campgrounds outside the park, it’s a no-brainer - cheaper and you’re closer to all the good stuff!

Great for family reunions!

Went there with our family and loved it. All the great amenities that you’d find at a KOA. Highly recommended!

Best

Good place for camping and hunting

Largest CG in RMNP

This is the largest of the campgrounds in RMNP.  It has several loops, one is "generator free" and each have their own positives.  The CG sits above a couple shuttle stops at the moraine below and there is one that stops at the entrance so you can reach the rest of the park without driving yourself or to connect to other trailheads.  It is only near a couple trails, but the shuttle can get you where you need.  Each site has its own tent pad, picnic table and fire ring.  There are toilets and water sources centrally located and a few solar shower facilities (stalls to hang your own solar shower…bring your own water).  Being in the park makes it easy to get around without fighting all the traffic if you use the shuttles.

Centrally located in RMNP

Great campground!  There are trailheads on both sides and behind all the loops to connect to the RMNP trail system.  What makes this CG most convenient is the RMNP Shuttle lot is a short walk across the road from the campground so you can hike where you want and shuttle back or vice-versa.  Half of the loops suffered beetle kill so they are treeless but offer great views.  Some of the sites are close together, but all in a ll its a great National park campground with daily Firewood, ice, ice cream and candy sales and weekly educational programs in the amphitheater.  The community restrooms are also flush toilets instead of vault and they have dish cleaning facilities for the tent campers.

Last minute save

We needed a stop on the way out of Colorado and grabbed a quick night here in a tent site. Water was off for weather but stoves made much needed coffee in the cold.

Nice clean campground

Nice and clean we only stayed over night in our way west from iowa. But nice park and would come back!

Maiden Voyage

We took our maiden voyage here (just in case things went sour) had a great time. Friendly neighborhood of easy to pull through camp sites. Great facilities (including the dump station), close enough to town for a quick adventures and a nice playground for the kids.
