Anglers and families seeking a quiet lakeside base camp will find Flatiron Reservoir Campground positioned along 47 acres of water just outside Loveland. The county-managed facility provides electric hookups at all sites, with three tipi rentals available for those wanting an alternative to traditional tent camping. Sites slope with the natural terrain, requiring extra leveling for RVs, though pull-through options accommodate larger rigs.
The campground maintains a low-key atmosphere with vault toilets and potable water spigots located near the three restroom buildings. All sites face the reservoir and Flatiron Mountain, with waterfront spots offering the best shade coverage. Wildlife sightings include elk, deer, eagles, and bobcats, while coyotes can be heard calling at night. Cell service varies by carrier, with Verizon described as spotty throughout the area.
Bank fishing produces rainbow trout, though swimming and boating remain prohibited on the reservoir. The handicap-accessible fishing dock provides easier water access for those with mobility needs. "There is no water connection at the sites," notes Lawrence P., with the nearest dump station located 6 miles away at Carter Lake's ranger station. Day use permits cost an additional $7 per vehicle on top of the $25-35 nightly camping fees.
The campground requires advance reservations through Larimer County's system, though single-night stays may be available by calling the ranger station directly. A campground host stays on-duty during operating season. Eagle Campground at Carter Lake offers shower facilities for permit holders seeking that amenity. Book early for summer weekends when lakefront sites fill quickly.
Description

It is located northwest of Carter Lake at an elevation of 5,470 feet and is part of the Colorado-Big Thompson Project operated by the Bureau of Reclamation and the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District. The purpose of this water project is to divert water from the west slope to the east slope for drinking water, irrigation, and hydropower generation. Reclamation is solely responsible for power generation. The agencies jointly manage water levels for irrigation, municipal, and industry use. Recreation is managed by Larimer County Natural Resources. Flatiron Reservoir is a popular spot for fishing and family camping.
