About

State Park

Welcome to Cottonwood Campground at Boyd Lake State Park! This spot is a solid choice for those looking to enjoy a mix of nature and convenience. The campground is open year-round and offers a range of amenities to make your stay comfortable. You’ll find electric hookups, drinking water, and clean restrooms with coin-operated showers. Plus, pets are welcome, so feel free to bring your furry friends along.

The campground is near Loveland, CO, and is just about 100 yards from Boyd Lake. There’s a nice trail along the lake, perfect for a morning jog or an evening stroll. The sites are level and can accommodate both tents and RVs. While the sites are a bit close together, they’re well-maintained with picnic tables and fire pits at each spot. Some shade trees are scattered around, providing a bit of relief from the sun.

One of the highlights here is the beach area. It’s a great place to relax, with shaded outdoor tables and a small store for snacks and rentals. Just a heads-up, the store closes early, so plan accordingly. The sand is soft, making it a nice spot for kids to play or for you to just kick back and enjoy the view.

Families will appreciate the playgrounds and open spaces for games. There’s also a swim beach and easy access to a dump station with fresh water fill. The campground is patrolled by CPW Rangers, so you can feel safe and secure during your stay.

Overall, Cottonwood Campground offers a pleasant mix of natural beauty and modern conveniences, making it a great spot for a weekend getaway or a longer stay. Enjoy your time here!

Nothing bad nothing great

There are a lot of spots for RVs so you are a little bit packed. Showers are a little bit cold. The view from campsites are neither beautiful neither ugly.

Very nice for city campground

Neat Boyd lake. Sites are about 100 yards from lake. Nice trail along lake. Sites are level. No tent pads, but likely could set up on gravel or lawn in the site. Only modest site separation with little screening between sites. Some shade trees. Noise level from the city hum is about 45 db, peaking at 50-60 when trains or airplanes go by. Swim beach, playgrounds, close to stores for supplies. Only about half full on a Sunday night in September.

Great beach areas

Like to come here to The beaches off of the campground. Public Beach is nice with shaded outdoor tables and small food vender small store and SUP rentals. They close EARLY in the day so be prepared. I think 4:30 or 5:00pm. Easy access Dump Station with fresh water fill located along all the campground loops and marked on map. All asphalt driveway pull through sites with larger gravel set up areas. Picnic tables and fire pit. Multiple Clean flushing toilets bathrooms and nice coin showers. Shade trees mixed around and large common areas in between the loops for your games. Playground and horse shoes. Beach Area access off of the campground loops walking path. Sand is soft and finer consistency. Bring a wagon to haul shade items, inflatables and chairs. Can be a walk depending on water level. Call ranger station to verify the water levels. Patrolled well by CPW Rangers.

Good for families

It’s not the campground for me. We prefer spots spaced farther apart, there were a LOT of spots but they were right on top of each other. The ones closer to the lake had a nice view. Facilities were nice. Lots of kids and bikes and playgrounds. Just not what we wanted so we moved on.

Nice simple spot

This is just an electric site only. It has bathroom and showers that take quarters. The sites are black top and pull through. They could be a bit more spread out, but it’s not terrible as each door faces the back of the others camping. There’s picnic tables and a fire ring at each site. There appears to be laundry facilities as well, but they show as closed for the season. The bathrooms are clean, but could use new dryers and soap dispensers. Overall a nice stay. Quiet and lots of open space to bike or walk the dogs.

Nice place

I really like this place, it is open 24 hours, and was able to get in even though I didn’t have reservations but they had quite a few spaces open even in July. There are nice clean shower facilities, although you have to use quarters for water. I used a late check out to recharge the backup batteries with the solar panels and the morning sun. My son also set up The Joolca hot tap and shower tent ensemble and we skipped the facility showers as we did not have enough quarters and no change. Otherwise, it is a beautiful place.

Clean, shade, helpful hosts.

We booked this campground for our maiden voyage with our new trailer for its proximity to stores and town. We were pleasantly surprised when we got here. Nice sites, not a ton of privacy but pretty large. Our pull through site was so level we basically just had to unhook from the truck. There are a bunch of playgrounds some horseshoe pits, and open grassy areas for activities. The lake is kinda green near the sites but had a lot of people fishing. The host was quite helpful too. Electric at the sites with a couple water fill up stations at each loop. Free dump station.

Great Rec Area to stay!

Booked last rv site (for the same day) available anywhere close to Denver. We weren’t sure what we’d be getting. Just glad to have electric! Clean restrooms; showers were $.75/3 minutes; plus $.25 each additional minute thereafter. Hot shower was nice. Trail at the bottom of Cottonwood Loop B leads to concrete sidewalk around Boyd Lake. I did some yoga on a flat shoreline space, about 10 feet from the trail. Lots of folks were using the sidewalk for bicycle riding, walking and running. Trees hug the shoreline, allowing dappled shade along the route. Loveland has super new/clean Wal-Mart (on Eisenhower) for everything you might need!

Nice park and beach area

Had a really tough time getting an rsvp for a place near Longmont where my daughter lives. Online reserving said nothing available. Called the state park reservation number and she was very helpful. We managed a split reservation where we were in one site 2 days and another for 3 days. Electricity hookup only but you can get water near tour site and they have a dump station. Sites are small to park our 44 foot rv in but doable. Sites have fire rings and picnic tables. Nice beach area a short walk away where you can rent paddle boards and other items. Has a snack bar.

Boyd Lake State Park

We stayed at Boyd Lake State Park for one night as we were returning home after visiting in Montana.  This park is convenient to Fort Collins so every need can be met.  It is a pretty park located in a residential area surrounded by the lake.  The bathrooms were nice and the sites were clean.  We did not have a good site location as it was a last minute reservation.  Lots to do there and campers were having a good time swimming, boating, fishing and bicycling.  There were mountain fires at the time we were there so it was smokie. We were is site #82 and I don't recommend it.  No privacy and no shade.  The park is very close to an entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park.

Nice weekend spot

Great location, close enough to Denver for a weekend trip. Sites are a bit close together, but that might be better in summer months when trees have leaves. Bathrooms were very clean—pay showers. 3 bars on Sprint...good enough to stream a movie.

Lakeside camping near Fort Collins

Boyd Lake State Park is situated near the city of Fort Collins with distant views of the mountains. It has a large lake that is used by boaters, fishermen and sandcastle builders all summer. The campground consists of several loops. Trees were planted years ago and several are larger, creating a reasonable amount of shade at some campsites. We stayed in campsite 126 our first time camping there and it was ideal. Located at the end of a camping loop, the level, paved site provided a view of the lake and reasonable shade from a distant cottonwood tree during dinner. The sites here are generally level and spacious with full bathrooms in each loop. Electric is at each site, with a water and dump station located near the entrance of the campground. Bike trails for the city intersect this campground, so you can bike to Loveland or Fort Collins on paved, wide paths. Kayaking is easy with several inlets, or if you have a boat, bring it and enjoy the water. A newer, large picnic area and new playground are a quick bike ride from the campground next to the swim beach. There is an event area that can be rented and several opportunities for recreation throughout the park. We visited in both June and September. Both were busy, but the campground was quiet at night and the staff was helpful. There are horseshoe pits, small playgrounds, and a volleyball area in various camping loops. I definitely would stay again if in this area. Learn More: minnieoutwest.com

Convenient location

All sites have great access and close to the ponds. Variety of fish in the ponds. They allow ice fishing as long as the ice is safe. Some traffic noise if you are on the east side of the park due to proximity to I 25. Best to get a yearly Colorado access pass.

So Pretty, Lots of Pull Through Spots

We travelled here in mid-October 2020 when the campground was about 50% full. There are lots of pull through spots that accommodated both our 24’ hybrid trailer and our friend’s 30’ RV well.

Each spot where we were had a table and fire pit as well as an electrical hook up.

The bathrooms were very clean and showers were good. There is a super cute play structure with acorn seats. A horseshoe pit and a basketball court were open when we were there.

The leaves were changing and it was very beautiful. No interstate noise even though we could see traffic in the distance. The lake has a pretty shoreline with a soil (versus sand) beach.

Boyd Lake State Park provided an opportunity to explore Rocky Mountain National Park over a week’s stay. It is about an hours drive from Estes Park on very winding roads. There are some parts of the park that have more trees than our site had. Bathroom was clean although the power outlets didn’t work. Did not use lake. The adjoining town of Loveland has everything you could ever ask for as far as food and shopping.

Great Campground

Long drive from Nebraska and got to campground around 4pm.  Had reserved site on drive.  Glad I did, because when I got there, they had already filled for the night.

Accessed site and set up my tent under the small (very, very, very small) tree/bush on the grass/gravel side of the site.  The parking area was quite large and allowed me to spread out and do a repair (again) to a burnt out headlight.

I was able to get my bike out and do a quick ride around the area, even going over to Mariner Point.  Great views and excellent conditions to ride.

Headed out to the local area to get some groceries and returned to cook at the site.  The other campers were very nice and had nice conversation and a couple beers with the nearby sites.  This was the 5th campground in 7 days on a solo tour, so was nice to have people around.

The next morning I was able to get up at a late 630am (after several 5am wake up calls in other campgrounds) and get in a 10 mile bike ride before making some breakfast and breaking camp.  My site was totally packed and ready to roll by 9am on my way to Wyoming.

This is on my shortlist of places to return to in Colorado.
