Forest Road 119

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Roosevelt National Forest manages Forest Road 119 as a dispersed camping area outside Estes Park, where campers pull off into informal sites scattered along a rough dirt road. No designated sites, no hookups. Just a series of pullouts with enough space for tents and most mid-sized rigs, set within a national forest corridor that draws a fair amount of weekend traffic.

Road conditions are the defining factor here. Multiple reviewers flag the route as rough and recommend high-clearance vehicles. One camper noted that a Subaru needed assistance making it through. A campervan driver described the climb as nerve-wracking but manageable, while a 2025 review warns that trailers are a poor match for this road, particularly if the gate is closed and there is no room to turn around. Seasonal closures are also a real concern. At least one reviewer found the gate locked well into early summer, and another reported the road was undrivable even in a capable SUV during that period.

Once past the access challenges, campers report open views from the upper sections of the road. Sites fill up on weekends, so arriving early gives the best shot at a quieter pullout. Cell service is listed as available. Hermit Park Open Space, about 1.7 miles northeast, provides a more structured alternative with designated sites if the dispersed setup does not fit your plans.

Campers with high-clearance vehicles who do not mind roughing the road will find a no-cost, no-frills overnight stop worth checking out.

Road is Closed

We just hauled our trailer down this road to find out it’s closed and had no where to turn around. Ended up having to back way down the hill before finding a spot and it still was a mess. Do not recommend.

Rough to get up but nice view

Road is open for summer and it’s kinda rough getting up, but once your there, it’s a pretty nice view. Went up in a campervan and felt kinda scared but made it.

Unavailable!!

There was a gate that appears to be locked until sometime in summer. The road was not drivable even in a Toyota forerunner!

Great views, can get busy

There are quite a few little spots right off the road that have plenty of space. The road is pretty rough and high clearance is recommended. A Subaru need our help a little bit. We camped on a weekend and the road and other sites got pretty busy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the rules for dispersed camping on Forest Road 119?

When camping on Forest Road 119, standard dispersed camping rules apply: camp only in established sites (look for areas with evidence of previous use), maintain at least 100 feet distance from water sources, and follow all fire restrictions in effect. The road experiences seasonal closures with a gate that's locked during winter and spring months, typically opening for summer access only. Be prepared for potentially busy conditions on weekends when the road is open. Always practice Leave No Trace principles by packing out all trash and waste.

What amenities are available at Forest Road 119 dispersed camping sites?

Forest Road 119 offers true dispersed camping with minimal amenities. There are no developed facilities such as restrooms, picnic tables, trash service, or potable water. Campers should plan to pack in all necessary supplies and pack out all waste following Leave No Trace principles. The main attraction is the natural setting with scenic views, particularly once you reach the higher elevations of the road.

Do I need a 4WD vehicle to access Forest Road 119 for camping?

Yes, a 4WD vehicle with high clearance is strongly recommended for Forest Road 119. The road conditions are rough and challenging, making it difficult for standard passenger vehicles. SUVs with lower clearance like Subarus have needed assistance navigating certain sections. Even capable vehicles like Toyota 4Runners have had difficulty in poor conditions. During winter and spring, the road is typically closed with a gate blocking access. For safety, avoid attempting this road with trailers or campervans.

Where is Forest Road 119 dispersed camping located?

Forest Road 119 dispersed camping is located in a mountainous area that offers scenic views. The road winds through forested terrain with multiple pull-off spots suitable for camping scattered along its length. It's a seasonal destination that typically opens during summer months when conditions permit access. The area features several small sites positioned right off the main road, providing campers with space to set up while enjoying the natural surroundings.
