Frequently Asked Questions

How do I access Hermit Pass from Westcliffe, Colorado?

To access Hermit Pass from Westcliffe, Colorado, take County Road 160 (also called Hermit Road) heading west from town. The road begins as a well-maintained gravel road but becomes increasingly steep and rough as you ascend toward the pass. Prepare for a challenging drive that requires high clearance and 4WD, especially in the upper sections. The route is extremely steep with continuous inclines and switchbacks. Plan for a slow journey and ensure your vehicle has good brakes before attempting this drive, as the descent can be particularly demanding on your braking system.

Where can I find dispersed camping near Westcliffe, CO?

Dispersed camping options are available in the San Isabel National Forest surrounding Westcliffe. The Hermit Pass area offers several primitive dispersed sites along County Road 160 as you head west from town, particularly in the lower sections before the road becomes too steep. Look for established pullouts and previously used sites to minimize environmental impact. Additional dispersed camping can be found along Forest Service roads in the Wet Mountains south of town and in the Rainbow Trail area. Remember to follow Leave No Trace principles and camp at least 100 feet from water sources. No facilities are available at dispersed sites, so come prepared with water and waste disposal plans.
