Hayden Creek Roadside Camp

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

The sound of Hayden Creek is hard to miss. Sites along this dispersed corridor in San Isabel National Forest sit close enough to the water that the creek runs as constant background noise, and in early summer, when snowmelt keeps flows high, that sound carries well into the night. The access road is dirt but manageable for most vehicles, including larger rigs that reviewers have brought in without issue.

Flat, shaded tent sites line the road at intervals, with boulders placed by the Forest Service to keep vehicles from driving too far into the riparian area. Fire pits are present at multiple spots. Crowd levels tend to stay low even on weekends, though this is first come, first served, so arriving early on a Friday gives a better shot at the sites closest to the water. A small gas station is nearby for fuel and ice; full resupply runs take roughly 45 minutes.

Cell coverage drops out along the road and does not return until about two miles toward the highway. Plan downloads, maps, and communications before leaving the main road. Kat B. sums up the draw simply: "Would come back for the quiet and the creek access alone." The nearby Hayden Creek Road campground and Coaldale Campground offer developed alternatives if dispersed camping does not fit your setup. Flies can be a nuisance in summer, so bug spray and a head net are worth packing.

Quiet creekside spot with easy access

Stayed here the week leading up to July 4th and loved the peace and quiet. Only had one neighbor the entire stay. Sites are really close to the creek, which made for great white noise and easy water access.

Restroom was close by and kept clean. Road in is dirt but easy to navigate for most vehicles. First come, first served, so get there early if you have a site in mind.

One heads up: no cell service until about 2 miles out toward the main road, so plan accordingly. Also dealt with a lot of flies during our stay, bring bug spray and have nets.

Temperature was good. Highs of 85f with lows of 35f at night.

Would come back for the quiet and the creek access alone.

Perfect spot

Quite a few flat tent spots right by the creek although there are boulders from preventing you from driving too far into the woods. The water was flowing well in July and we loved the sound overnight. Very clean and lots of fire pits. A few cars drove by but otherwise it was super quiet, even arriving on a Friday afternoon. No T-Mobile service. We will definitely be back!

Dispersed camping along Hayden Creek Rd

There are a handful of dispersed camping sites along Hayden Creek Rd, South of Cuttys and before you get the the USFS campground. These sites seems to be primarily tent camping, though we were able to get our pop-up in 1 spot. We saw 2 other larger RVs near the upper Rainbow Trail camping area. The creek is nice and the sounds was much louder then we anticipated, which was good. In June 2024 it is really flowing. It looks as though USFS has been adding boulders to restrict vehicles from driving too far off road. Lots of places to park and set up a tent though.
