Creek sounds greet campers at North Crestone Creek Campground, where sites are positioned along the water as it runs uphill from the small town of Crestone into Rio Grande National Forest. The drive-in access and 22-foot RV limit keep the campground relatively low-traffic, and the sites are spaced far enough apart that groups of five or more can set up multiple tents without crowding their neighbors. Mosquitoes can be severe through the summer months, so late-season visits tend to be more comfortable.
Bears are active in the area. Two separate bear visits were reported during a single three-night stay, both linked to a neighboring site leaving food out. Bear boxes are available on site. Proper food storage is not optional here.
The backpacking trail at the end of the campground gives access to fishing lakes and streams higher up the mountain. Crestone Needle Trail is another nearby option for those looking to extend their time on foot. Amenities are standard for a Forest Service site: pit toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, and drinking water. "Lots of hiking/trail running," notes Melissa B. in her review.
At $7 per night, the fee is low. Bring cash, as card payment is not reported as available. Maintenance has been inconsistent based on past reviews, so arriving with low expectations for upkeep is wise. Fall visits, after the bug season subsides, tend to draw the most favorable accounts.
Description
The campground stretches 0.7 miles up a mountain along North Crestone Creek. It is rustic with camping sites nestled among Aspen, Juniper, Fir and other riparian-loving trees. Because the sites are so far apart, each site has a feeling of secluded wilderness camping with few of the inconveniences. The campground is convenient to a public golf course and the interesting Town of Crestone.
