Van Damme State Park sits in a narrow coastal valley where Little River meets the Pacific, and the campground managed by California State Parks occupies both sides of that corridor, split between a lower loop near the creek and an upper loop set farther back in the trees. Highway 1 runs directly in front of the park entrance, with a beach accessible just across the road. The layout divides into distinct zones: sites 1 through 13 occupy the lower loop, while the upper loop holds the remainder of the 74 total sites. Campers looking at sites near Van Damme State Park will find this one among the more developed options along the Mendocino coast, with full hookups available for RVs up to 35 feet, though the access roads through the upper sections include a temporary bridge and narrow stretches that challenge less experienced drivers towing larger rigs.
The character of the campground shifts noticeably depending on where you land. Lower loop sites along the creek are forested and shaded, while parts of the upper loop open into meadow-like clearings with less canopy, some with limited privacy after recent tree work. "Some are also not very private," notes MarinMaverick, who recommends choosing sites carefully. Site 45 backs up to redwoods; site 52 has drawn mentions for being relatively flat, which matters since camper pads are dirt and levelness varies across the campground.
Each site includes a bear box, fire ring, and picnic table. Firewood is delivered daily by camp hosts. Bathrooms are scattered throughout with flush toilets and paid showers, running about four quarters for five minutes, with tokens also available from the host. Free WiFi is available in the park, which is useful given that cell service is essentially absent even near the entrance. A visitor center and gift shop round out the on-site facilities.
The Group Camping Area - Van Damme State Park sits to the north near the creek with a large meadow and its own fire ring setup, while the Upper Loop (Sites 31-74) - Van Damme State Park gives tent campers more tree canopy and spacing. Fern Canyon Trail connects from the campground when open, and the nearby Pygmy Forest boardwalk offers a short walk worth the detour. The beach is a genuine draw. "Coastal fishing can also be done nearby," as Haley C. notes, and tidepooling is possible depending on tides. Mendocino is a five-minute drive for groceries or dinner.
Reservations are strongly advised. The campground runs year-round, but coastal weather stays cool and often damp regardless of season, so waterproof gear is worth packing even in summer. Rates run $45 to $160 per night, with an additional $10 per day for a second vehicle. The Little River Spur (Sites 14-30) - Van Damme State Park provides a nearby alternative for campers who want a different configuration within the same park system.

California State Parks wants to thank our park visitors for helping us keep our parks and environment clean. In 2018, State Parks installed new RV dump station collection systems at ten state park units as part of a pilot program to help us protect the environment and are added amenities for our visitors.
Following the success of the initial pilot program in 2018, an additional eleven park units have been added to the program. The service is available for campers, day-use or transient visitors for $10-$20 per use, depending on the location. Please note that visitors with current reservations arriving on or after April 13, 2021, who are interested in using the RV dump stations may be required to pay the use fee. The price per campsite for these state parks does not include the use of a dump station. View the following link: Camping Information
Discount Pass must be presented at the time of check in. Your DMV Disabled Placard/License Plate does not automatically give you a discount on your campsite. Fees include entry for 1 vehicle and 1 legally towed vehicle or trailer, additional vehicles will be charged per night at the park. Although your site may hold 2 or more vehicles, your reservation only covers 1 vehicle (except for group or specialty sites). Hike-in sites do not allow dogs.
