Beautiful location <5 minute drive away from the beach and Morro rock. SLO is close, and the coast is always nice. There's a pretty boardwalk trail next to the site as well (see photos).

These aren't camp sites, they're parking spots with a fire pit on dead grass and weeds. You're packed like sardines next to adjacent campers. It's unclear where the boundary of each others' site is. For facilities, they do have big bathrooms, showers, and dumpsters… but they're all filthy and unkempt. And even though the bathrooms may be right next to your site, there's no way to get to them without walking through another person's camp site or going all the way around– down the road or around many camps. We had a crotchety old man get mad at us for walking somewhat through his site. I enjoyed my stay, but only because I wasn't the one paying for the site.
TLDR: This site functions moreso as an overnight parking spot than it does a campsite.
I had hopes this campground would be open during the winter. Alas :(
The rain had run large ruts in the dirt on the way down, so cars without clearance may have a hard time driving in. But it was so beautiful and there were not many other campers. I will be staying there again. No running water though, as I thought there may be at the bathrooms on the road. Next to the road so there is noise, but it’s still great.
This site is nothing special but it’s the only BLM I could find in the area. We stopped on the way up to Shasta. You don’t need ground clearance or 4wd to get there. Lots of space, there will certainly be a place for you when you pull in. Only one or two other campers were there when we stayed. Nice place
The cost was low and the location was great: inside the park! It’s mostly for tents, so it’s not as sleep-in-car friendly. If you’re sleeping in a vehicle I’d suggest the BLM spot literally right down the road outside the park. But this had bathrooms and was paved so it was great for our old sedan.
Wonderful campground inside of the National Park down the road from the visitors center. Gets you a great start to your day on whatever hike you choose to do the morning you wake up. No showers, but we’ll taken care of. The signs all said “No Vacancy” but we tried anyways and the staff gave us one of the few extra spots!
The tent sites aren’t sites, they’re just on a medium sized lawn where you have to pick a spot. $33 felt expensive but at least they had showers. Likely a better experience for those in RV’s.
The Bathrooms were falling apart and disgusting. The sites were hardly designated and you have to pay for your site at the gas station across the street, which is hardly made clear. It was 90°+ overnight too, though that’s nobody’s fault lol.
Very well taken-care-of campsite. Tons of spots for RV’s, with hookups. Tent sites have a designated tent spot, fire pit, table, and even a sink. The office store has anything you need, but there’s also a Walmart right around the corner. The wifi is strong, the laundry is cheap, and the toilet paper is soft. This site was a terrific break from camping on the road without paying for a cheap, terrible motel. All for $40 (tent site)! Very happy with our stay.
This was a great place to post up for the night on the way to Joshua tree, and I had no issues getting there. There is some sand to drive through, but I don't think you'll need a 4wd vehicle tbh. I stayed closer to the mountains on the edge of the dropoff, and there were lots of shattered bottles and large appliances dumped - so it was rather unclean. But if you're in a pinch, this is certainly a choice! Pretty at sunset.
This is a good free spot near Mesa Verde, but if it is closed check out the many BLM spots on road 316 off the highway, barely West of Target Tree Campground slightly East of Mancos.

It felt like a 5-minute drive from here to Black Canyon - it's so close to the entrance. I met some wonderful people also camping here who had a long trailer (there are a few spots for bigger trailers to stay) and we had a good time in this great spot. I will be returning here next time I come to the area!
Yes it's near the highway, but I don't think I ever even noticed that. The noise is not bad. Most of the noise comes from the river, which is relaxing. If you come in an off season like spring, there's no way to pay at the kiosk so stay is free.
Couldn't stay in Crested Butte so this 30 minute drive South did the trick!
Not a terrible price for front row seats of the sand dunes, plus bathrooms and such. Cancellations appear on the website, so even if you show up and they say they're full, check the website because there may be a last-minute opening you can snag like I did.
Dog friendly, many families were walking theirs around the loop and nearby trails. Very pleasant site
It's a long, bumpy road up to the very top, but there are some open spots to park your vehicle and trailer in somewhat seclusion toward the peak. Very happy I discovered this place but you'll have to go a lot further up than where the pin/map marker is dropped!
I recommend not going if you have a normal low clearance car… although I did notice someone somehow got a Prius up there
The showers and bathroom here were phenomenal and that was certainly the highlight of my stay. There are plenty of sites here, each one getting at least electric hookups. There's no privacy of course, but that's because it's just one big organized dirt parking lot. For $15 I will certainly come back if I ever travel through.
Stayed here in my awd van and everything went fine, but the trail loop beyond the main sites is extremely bumpy and can only be traversed with high-clearance vehicles which limits your options for finding a site. But if you're one of the first 15 people there, I'd say you'll be able to find a spot. Might be a bit more difficult with a large trailer. Nothing spectacular but it certainly did the trick for the night
Many of the roads and bathrooms were closed for Covid I'm assuming, so it was difficult to find a place to use the restroom. There are also no showers. Rating 5 stars for cleanliness, I had a nice experience here for $20/night
I wish I had some kind of bike or OHV vehicle because this looks like such a sweet spot for free riding; there are hills and jumps everywhere. Lots of motor vehicle activity because of this.
I was just there to camp in my van and it worked out great. Spots are not in surplus necessarily but if you're not there in a peak season like spring I'm sure you'll find a place to pull over. Glass bottles were shattered everywhere around the spot I chose and I was grateful not to pop a tire. But I felt secluded enough despite the lack of privacy and think it's worth returning to for sure.
