Fishing along the Arkansas River draws many visitors to Cherokee Park, a US Army Corps of Engineers campground situated next to a dam outside Morrilton. Bald eagles, blue herons, and river otters have all been spotted here by campers, making the riverbank worth watching even when the fish aren't biting. The campground is accessible by both boat and vehicle, though the access road can be rough, so drivers with low-clearance vehicles should plan accordingly.
Sites are laid out with a mix of lakeside positions and shaded spots, and each one includes electric and water hookups. RVs up to 60 feet are accommodated. Bathrooms have been noted as older but functional, and more recent visitors report them clean and equipped with showers. Cell coverage is workable: one reviewer logged three bars of 5G Verizon. There is no designated swimming area, which is worth knowing before arrival.
The campground host has been noted for being attentive without being intrusive, and rangers patrol regularly. "Helpful but not overbearing or too chatty," is how Cheri H. describes the host. Nearby, Cherokee Park and Sequoya Park provide additional options if this campground is full.
The season runs March 1 through October 31, with a 14-night maximum stay. Nightly rates run $24 to $26, dropping to $13 with a federal pass. Reservations are available and worth making during summer weekends.
