Beautiful place on the Natchez Trace

This is a great campground right off the Natchez Trace. I was able to get the last spot there. After my set up I went for a walk up to the old church and remains of the town of Rocky Springs. Being a Nevada Barr fan I was delighted to see the cemetery she mentioned in one of her books “Deep South”. I had planning on staying two nights but had trouble with my refrigerator so I was disappointed that I had to leave the next day. Will definitely be back when I am in the area. I will say this is a rustic campground. There are two bathroom facilities and the third has been boarded up for years. Have your fresh water tank full when you arrive. There is no water available other than the sinks and flush toilets in the bathrooms. No shower facilities. Not an issue for me as I travel in a small motorhome. And don’t show up with a full tank of grey and black water because there isn’t a dump station. I didn’t get to hike the hiking trails. I did walk down to the water that is behind the amphitheater and it was pretty. Very quiet and peaceful place.

Beautiful peaceful place on the Arkansas River

Beautiful place located not far off I-40. Easy to get to just know you’re going through downtown Morillton and past some churches then past some farmland to get out there. Beautiful and peaceful place to just sit and watch the river. Mr. Jack, campground host, was the perfect combination of helpful but not overbearing or too chatty. The ranger patrols frequently which is nice but this was a very quiet place.

Nice state park

Beautiful visitors center. Pretty campground on the lake. You can see Mount Nebo in the distance. Not much in the way of hiking trails. They have a short loop trail near the visitor center that is good for small children.

Really cool setup

Cute set up and had a deck and neat chairs. Fun for a sleepover.

Near the pool, not real close to a bathroom or the bathhouse/shower facilities. The hiking trail is nearby so you can park and then carry your stuff in on the hiking trail (it is not paved).

They’re so cute

I am going to review it like I saw it. Really cute. Pack light as you’re going to have to carry your stuff in not a really long hike but you can not drive in to the area where the Tentrrrs are located. Some have nice views of the lake and some look out at the lake but are in a lower lying area that retains water if it rains. Really nice wooden decks. You’re going to need to walk to the bathhouse and some are not located near bathrooms/restrooms facilities.

History, Nature, Beautiful Beaches

I loved this place. The fort is so cool and the history of this place is fascinating. I like the campground, clean bathhouses, nice beaches and trails. The sites are a little bit close but not uncommon for national parks. Some are very short so check to make sure you are going to fit. They closely monitor the campsites to make sure that you are not extended past your site.

Would definitely recommend and come back.

Great place to stay

I love this place. It has easy access to the Tammany Trace bike path, hiking trails, a beautiful beach and incredible views of Lake Ponchartrain. I was only going to stay two nights but extended my stay for two additional nights. I really didn’t want to go when I left but I had to ease on back towards home so I could be there in time for Christmas.

Amazing

Stayed two nights here. Loved it. My one recommendation is that you bring a lot of water hose. I had 50’ and it wasn’t enough. The water was located way at the front of the site and I couldn’t access it. And it was impossible to get my site level. My neighbor had the same issues.

This park is great. It had hiking trails and a CCC hike/bike trail, an antique automobile museum, lots of scenic overlooks, cabins, a lodge, an amazing visitor center and restaurant. I had the best time here. Lots of Civilians Conservation Corps architecture. They built the whole park with the exception of some of the newer cabins .

Nice of them to let me stay BUT

I needed some things and I need to return a couple items so I stopped. While in the store at the help desk I asked if I could stay. I was told where to park. The main problem I had was that people kept coming and knocking on the RV asking for different things. One guy wanted me to come jump his car off. I offered to call police to assist him and he left. I was so creeped out by one guy that I drove away and then came back later. Lots of light so I didn’t really feel unsafe but the one guy did make me uneasy. Probably wouldn’t stay here again. I was warned by a local person to avoid staying in Fort Smith.

I like big boats and I cannot lie

Great place to watch boats or go out in one yourself. Large campground lots of sites. Wasn’t impressed with the one to the right as you first get there, looked like more long term residents and almost left after riding through there but then I could see there was a campground further down the road and it was a very nice. Level sites. You can watch the boats on the river.

Nice state park

Very nice state park with level sites with full hookups. Very interesting visitors center with exhibits explaining history of the park and a replica wagon (I asked). Nice large pool area with a water playground/splash pad. You can’t swim or Paddleboard but can kayak or fish here.

It was ok, I wasn’t super impressed

I had heard so many great things about this park but I was not that impressed. The sites are fairly close together. There’s no signs warning that if you are in a large RV you shouldn’t come in on a certain highway. They do have equestrian trails and a campground to accommodate campers with horses. They have a lot of hiking trails. There are cabins and a pool.

Nice peaceful place to rest and relax

Nice campground on a loop many sites have lake view. Nice hiking trails. I didn’t use the bathhouse facilities but did see host cleaning them daily. Mountain bikers like the trails. I don’t ride a mountain bike but saw some out there when I was hiking. My site was very nice and level. Not completely secluded but large enough that I felt like I had plenty of privacy. The site I had overlooked the boat launch area which is separate from the campground but the fishermen were quiet. I never heard them putting in or taking out their boats.

History and forest

I was out there on a weekday. This is a massive place with lots of history. I am not sure if I was in the right area for camping or not since things aren’t marked. I turned right before you get to the section where the headquarters were located. This place is massive with paved roads going in many different directions. I saw the other reviewers pictures and I never came across anything that looked like what they were showing. The roads were not well marked. I turned right off Hwy 165 south of Woodworth and then after passing the Camp Claiborne sign took a right by the Camp Claiborne Battalion sign. I then took another right and followed that road to the end. There was a barricade and no way to turn around so I backed all the up to the other road. Be careful here because some of the pavement had come loose and dropped into the creek. I would have stopped at the forestry office south of Alexandria but they were closed. As I was leaving and almost back to the highway, I saw truck pulling a large pontoon boat loaded down with water toys so I feel as though there may have been more to the area than what I saw. I would like to come back in the winter time and explore more on my e-bike.

Some people love it but I don’t see it

I thought it was okay. The campground is in a pretty location and most sites have a nice lake view but sites are close together and extremely hard if not nearly impossible to level IF you don’t have self levelers which I don’t. The sites are narrow and on a slope so your picnic table is down a steep rocky slope. What does make me think this is a nice family campground is all the multigenerational families camping here making memories. I however as a solo camper am reviewing the campground itself. There are some tent sites down at the very end of the loop closest to the lake. Campground is a one way loop.

First to Review
Group Camp for rent

This is beautiful place. You can rent it for a large group through the Ouachita National Forest Rangers district. Has bunkhouses, a dining hall, crafts cabins, staff cabins, a basketball goal and baseball field and bathhouses for staff and campers. This is not for the individual camper. This is specifically for large groups (Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, church groups, etc.). Or if you needed a huge complex for a family reunion (we have friends with such a large family they rented out an entire state park for the weekend for their family reunion, Cheminahaut State Park in Bastrop, Louisiana). Has some CCC construction including a beautiful dam. Has a large reservoir/lake, hiking trail. I can not stress enough this is not a place where just anyone can go in and camp. You have to rent it through the rangers district office and you have to have insurance for your stay. This is not a tent/RV campground.

Great campground especially for boaters

Good. Corps of Engineers campground. Helpful hostess in the registration booth. Motel, marina right there on site. Rangers check on the place frequently. Nice clean bathrooms. Lots of sites to choose from. Boaters often park their boats near their campsites. Beautiful lake. Nice large sites.

Beautiful beautiful and peaceful location

Rustic campground in a serene and pristine setting along a small river/creek. Take care driving down the well maintained dirt road to get here. It’s nicely graded and hard packed but narrow. And I am not sure if it’s rained recently if there’s the potential for getting stuck. I went in such a dry spell that there’s a burn ban in place so didn’t have this issue. Creek was flowing slowly because there’s been no rain since May and it’s now late July. Pretty creek and pretty shaded campground. No cell signal with AT&T.

Lake park and campground

Lonely place especially for boaters. Marina on site and motel

Beautiful lakeside campground

First all sites are just electric. I filled up my tank at home and recommend you do as well. They have places to fill up water but it’s not necessarily convenient to do so when the campground is full. I like the electric only sites.
