Holbrook/Petrified Forest KOA is near the surrounding national parks and monuments. Easy access to I-40 gets you to many attractions, including the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest National Park (20 minutes). All sites are pull-through, level, and with a picnic table. We are "Big Rig Friendly" with a variety of large sites. Dogs and cats are welcome.
There is no RV, car, or front country camping in the park. There is no boondocking, dispersed or “primitive” camping, or just pulling off into a parking area.
There is only backpacking/hiking into the designated Petrified Forest National Wilderness Area to spend the night in the park, at least a half mile from your vehicle. Please be prepared for this adventure! Remember to LNT.
The backpacking wilderness permit is free. You may obtain it in person from either visitor centers on the day that you want to backpack. Each vehicle must have a permit. The permits are available until 4:30 pm.
There are private campgrounds throughout Navajo and Apache Counties, in and around Holbrook, Sun Valley, St. Johns, Joseph City, and other communities.
Groups
Group camping is limited to 8. Because of the fragile soils and landscape features, minimum impact camping is very important. This includes limiting the number of people within an area.
Midway between the Navajo Nation and the Fort Apache Indian Reservation on I-40 lies Holbrook – the home of OK RV Park and the friendliest folks you’ll ever find. Hike or bike the trails in Petrified Forest National Park, play golf at Hidden Cove, swim at the city pools, marvel at the world’s best-preserved meteor crater, and shop at some the quirkiest places ever. Oh…modern I-40 preserves and follows historic Route 66. Now you know!

We are located just 15 miles east of Holbrook on i-40 east. We are just one exit from the petrified forest national park. Amazing sunsets and sunrises and at night on a clear night thousands of stars making it perfect for star gazers.
This is northern az so in the summer its hot in the winter we can get snow lots of open space and dirt. Beautiful skys both day and night. You can star gaze and enjoy the beauty of the high desert. Campsite 1 and 2 are for our campers who are renting the 4 person tents. The rest are for campers, rvs, personal tents or cars. Just 1 exit away from the main entrance for the petrified forest national park/ painted desert. There are restrooms available just down the road at the painted desert Indian center from 8am to 6pm daily. When u get off i40 From either direction u will go to adamana rd make a left into adamana road and the the first right on to sun country and then the first left on northern star road go almost all the way to the end of the road and there is a little private road that comes up strait to us and will see our place and the tents ahead . The Painted Desert Ranger Cabin is a backcountry, off grid cabin built by Ranger Ross in 2011. Ranger Ross lived in the cabin while he worked as a resource protection ranger at the Petrified Forest National Park until 2015 when he transferred to the Maze District of Canyonlands National Park. Ranger Ross now allows backcountry hikers to enjoy the cabin by renting it out by the night or the week.
The ranger cabin is a rustic off grid cabin that offers almost no amenities. There is no concierge, room service, or continental breakfast. There is no linen service or fancy little bottles of shampoo. It does however, offer beautiful views of the Painted Dessert wilderness, quiet serenity, and amazing star gazing opportunities. All from the comfort of a cozy one room cabin with a queen size bed and a flush toilet.
The ranger cabin sits on the boarder of the north wilderness area of the Petrified Forest National Park. There are great hiking and exploration opportunities right out the back door of the cabin. For more information visit the park's website.

Crystal Forest Museum and Gifts is a free campground located at the Crystal Forest Gift Shop. The campground is open all year with approximately 20 camp spots. Please check with the gift shop before parking in the camp spots. The gift shop usually closes around 5 P.M. Water and power are available however, they may be turned off during the off-season.
The Petrified Forest National Park does not have a campground so, this might be a good option. The next closest campgrounds are 20 miles away in Holbrook. The campground is in a remote location so it can be very quiet at night.
Note: There are two gift shops at this location. One on each side of the highway. Both have camp spots available.

Stayed here overnight to visit the Petrified Forest National Park.
Staff was friendly and helpful. The "cowboy" breakfasts and dinners are simple friendly events, although I didn't eat there.
Lots are standard RV set-ups, all right next to each other. Lot was fairly level, but still needed from front/back leveling even in my small van. Gravel driveways, gravel lots.
Laundry had about 5-6 washers and the same number of dryers.
This location is near a highway that is busy all night. You are not right on the highway, but the steady sound of cars and trucks can be heard all night. Not super loud, but not peaceful either.
Wifi was slow and inconsistent. Even though I was right by the main building, my connection sometimes said "unable to connect, try moving closer", or just wouldn't connect, or if it did, was unusably slow. Verizon wireless was great though (about 10mb).
I'd stay again for a convenient overnight.
TravelerMy first KOA—pricey for a tent spot (car camping) with a small shared area and limited tables. Tent spots are in view of noisy I40. I did feel safe here, considering the KOA branding, and liked the shorter drive to PFNP. Facilities are nice, otherwise, with close bathhouses and a sweet little chuckwagon serving breakfast and dinner.

Great overnight stop after a visit through The Petrified Forest. Location awesome. We went to the area through the gate past the sheltered electric camp spots. There were cement pads as well in the fenced area. We positioned our trailer to block the light from the Crystal shop so we could photograph the milky way. Felt very safe.
The Crystal shop opens at 8am. Bought a few affordable crystals, friendly and knowledgable staff. A few photo opps with old cars weighed down with petrified rocks.

TravelerNeeded an overnight stay along Interstate 40 in New Mexico. Check-in was quick and easy, the sites are arranged so that RV doors are not facing the neighbor's sewage pipe, which is something I always appreciate. Most of the sites are pull-through. The park is well laid out and covered with an attractive reddish-brown gravel. The facilities were clean, the staff was pleasant. The park felt safe though the neighborhood around it is economically distressed. The park is family friendly; there is a dog-park, a nice pool, and attractive common area near the office with tables and statuary with a cute bear theme. The only negatives are not under the control of the park: trains pass by frequently day and night, and in the evening the mosquitos are voracious. My wife and I agree that we would return here.

TravelerWe live in the Phoenix area, and we use this KOA as a launching off point for trips to the East. The staff are always friendly and helpful. The grounds are well maintained. We were assigned spot #58 which is a big spot with a paver patio, furniture and a firepit. It also has privacy fencing on each side and full hookups. With our KOA discount it was $81.83. This was our first time with this large of a spot. Next time, we will go back to a regular spot again for a better price. The location is just off Interstate 40 which makes it convenient, but you can hear some of the freeway noise and an occasional train. They serve a delicious breakfast with a good variety that has an all you can eat pancake option for only $3.99. There is also a Cowboy Cookout every night. They are making more improvements to the grounds. Some spots will have a private enclosed patio with a gazebo and fire pit. For dog owners, there are some spots with your own enclosure, but those are hard to get. There is a dog run as well as a designated dog walking area with trees and trash cans.

We stayed one night in order to visit the Petrified Forest National Park. It was a typical RV park with tight sites, but they do a pretty good job of placing the rigs so you are not looking in your neighbor's windows We are the Class B van in the photo. The staff were very friendly and making a reservation was easy. The bathrooms were clean (but dated). The sloped floor in the shower was pretty noticible and may give those with balance issues a challenge. The laundry area was clean and reasonable ($2 wash and about $2 for dryer). We needed to level on the gravel site. Quiet, clean, RV park and worth the price. I may try the KOA in Holbrook next time just to compare, but I think this one was supposed to have less road noise.
ScoutA little hard to find but Janet was so helpful! There’s a shower and a communal cooking space and tons of options for camping. There’s not really designated camp spots, so pretty bare bones, but you can’t beat the price.

RangerWe were able to make a same day reservation and the staff were very nice. Someone was in our spot and they quickly got us into a new (and better) spot. The spots are pull-through, gravel, and very close to one another. It was extremely busy when we stayed probably because the location is good and there aren’t many options in the area so there was a bit of a parking lot feel. The pool and barbecue place weren’t open when we went, but the store was open till 8 and had the basics (I didn’t use the laundromat or bathrooms). The cost with our discount was around $40 - we felt like it got the job done and would certainly stay again if we were passing through Gallup and needed a place to camp.

No signage at all which would have been helpful. The area is somewhat unkempt - the few rigs there were in rough shape and looked as though they had been there for a while. Sites were not obvious. An old wrecked car is near the site. We were just kind of creeped out so didn’t stay.

ScoutI recently had the pleasure of staying at Nicks place, and despite a few initial concerns, my overall experience was nothing short of delightful.
Upon arrival, I encountered a slight discrepancy in pricing from what was advertised on Dyrt, expecting $20 but discovering it to be $30. However, any uncertainty quickly dissipated thanks to the exceptional hospitality of the owner, Nick. His warmth and willingness to assist instantly put me at ease, setting the tone for a memorable stay.
While the scenery might not have been as elaborate as anticipated, the tranquility of the surroundings provided the perfect backdrop for a restful night’s sleep. Though I had hoped to find petrified wood, its absence did not detract from the beauty of the natural landscape.
Navigating to the campsite posed a minor challenge despite the provided directions. Eventually with Nick assisting I found the campsite around midnight. Nevertheless, the secluded location added to the allure of the experience, offering a sense of escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Admittedly, the unpaved dirt roads leading to the campsite stretched for about 4 miles, which came as a surprise. However, this added element of adventure only served to enhance the overall rustic charm of the location. I should add that the only piece of instruction missing is the left turn on cattleman’s which is the left just before sun country’s campground. Good luck finding the camp area!
In retrospect, while there were minor inconveniences, they were far outweighed by the peace and tranquility that permeated every corner of this area. I would recommend this hidden gem to anyone seeking a serene retreat amidst nature’s embrace. My sincerest thanks to Nick and for providing such a memorable experience.

This is a rest/truck stop. It was very busy, trucks in the car area but so many road closures I could understand why the truckers needed rest. There is obviously some noise as trucks are arriving throughout the night but we parked up, slept then left. We were not disturbed !
