Free backcountry permits allow dispersed camping throughout this wilderness area within Petrified Forest National Park, accessed via a hike-in trail from the Painted Desert Inn. Campers must pack in all water and supplies, as no amenities exist beyond the trailhead.
The trail descends about 200 feet through switchbacks before opening into the high desert landscape of red dirt and scattered petrified wood fragments. Once past the designated trail end, campers can establish sites anywhere at least one mile from the trailhead. Multiple reviewers mention finding elevated plateaus that provide expansive views across the desert without visible development. Wind can be significant in this exposed terrain, with some visitors noting the challenge of securing tents in sustained gusts.
Night skies offer clear views of the Milky Way due to minimal light pollution. Kate S. found "beautiful views, an easy hike out, and no one else around" during her stay. Several campers report encountering pronghorn antelope and accessing petroglyphs and Puebloan archaeological sites within hiking distance of camp.
The park entrance fee applies before obtaining permits at the visitor center. Campers seeking developed facilities can find alternatives at Painted Desert Ranger Cabin or other campsites near Chambers.
