Petrified Forest Campground

Accessible via a 4-mile unpaved dirt road, this boondocking-style campground sits about 10 minutes from Petrified Forest National Park. Campers pay $35-$45 per night for open-area camping with no hookups or facilities. The host provides directions and remains responsive to questions, though multiple reviewers note the turn onto Cattleman's Road can be tricky to locate in the dark.

The property features wide-open terrain that accommodates big rigs but offers little wind protection. "Plenty of space to spread out and relax, awesome sunset and sunrise views," reports Andrew S.. Campers mention clear night skies for stargazing and generally quiet conditions, though some note trash left by previous visitors. Fire restrictions may apply during dry periods.

The location provides easy access to area attractions including Meteor Crater and the historic Wigwam Motel in Holbrook. Several reviewers used the campground as a base for exploring Quail Hallow and other nearby sites. The dirt access road requires decent ground clearance but remains passable for most vehicles with all-wheel drive.

Reservations are available, and pets are welcome. Campers should bring all supplies and be prepared for true boondocking conditions with no water, electric, or sewer connections.

Boondocking and primitive road ahead

We are on a trip and wanted to stop in the petrified forest and also experience a dark sky. We did get there in daylight. The site is lovely, nearby to the Petrified National Forest without feeling like your are close to much of anything. Mother nature had a dust storm to move through so we didn't get to see the stars, but that didn't stop us from having an amazing sunset and a wonderful night's sleep. The road is a bit tricky, but we found it with only one u-turn (a win when I'm in an unfamiliar place, if you ask me) and we would stay here again. The desert scenery is amazing.

Save your money

Good points were quier, great night sky, any sized rig can park and be level. Thee End! Windy, Dusty cow pasture. Directions sketchy. Park by neighbors dump. Same cost could have full hook ups at campground.

Hi Eric, thank you for your feedback—we genuinely appreciate you taking the time to share your experience.

We’re glad you enjoyed the quiet atmosphere, open space, and night skies—that’s exactly what our off-grid boondocking site is designed to offer.

We do want to clarify for future guests that this is a private, off-grid desert camping experience, clearly noted prior to booking. This means there are no hookups or developed campground amenities, which is part of the appeal for travelers seeking solitude and open land.

Regarding directions, we provide detailed step-by-step guidance along with visual references, and we’re always available if guests need assistance navigating. Because this is raw land without a formal address, some GPS systems may appear inconsistent—but our instructions are designed to account for that.

We appreciate your feedback and will continue improving clarity for all future guests. Safe travels.

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Here are some images we took while we tent camp on the property, very quiet and peaceful there I must reiterate, and even though there’s other campers, it has a feeling of privacy if you’re looking for somewhere more comfortable to pull off from Route 66 this is the place!

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Just what I needed for two nights

This place was about 3 miles off of the highway in Holbrook, Arizona about 10 minutes from the petrified national Forest. We went to a lot of the local places,Meteor Crayer, the Old historic WimWam hotel to look at the cars, the Blue Mesa and the petrified forest itself. It was a peaceful little Boondock style campsite. The host was great. Gave us an extra free night for this review.

I’m giving them five ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ . We will be back again.

Thank you for having us

Thank you for the kind review. You’re welcome back anytime. Glad you enjoyed yourself!

Great view.

The ONLY issue with the stay was the price. It was over 40 for 2 adults and 2 dogs. The view and peace is amazing. The host was VERY responsive and helpful all the way. I would definitely stay again. We are passing thru for work. But this stay was quite the view. A completely different kind of campground that I have ever stayed at. This is more like dispersed camping aka boondocking. We can see where other people have left some trash behind, so we picked it up. But if u want PEACE AND QUITE AND A BEAUTIFUL VIEW, this is the place.

Great spot near the highway that feels remote

Host was responsive and provided great directions, location was close to the Petrified Forest and 100% boondocking. Plenty of space to spread out and relax, awesome sunset and sunrise views. Unfortunately we were there during a fire ban, so no campfire for us, but still had a great evening. It is an open area so be careful with the winds if you have a lighter, top heavy rig. Only complaint would be the neighbors aren't the most tidy, trash was blowing around from their compound.

A Tranquil Retreat Amidst Nature’s Embrace

I recently had the pleasure of staying at Nicks place, and despite a few initial concerns, my overall experience was nothing short of delightful.

Upon arrival, I encountered a slight discrepancy in pricing from what was advertised on Dyrt, expecting $20 but discovering it to be $30. However, any uncertainty quickly dissipated thanks to the exceptional hospitality of the owner, Nick. His warmth and willingness to assist instantly put me at ease, setting the tone for a memorable stay.

While the scenery might not have been as elaborate as anticipated, the tranquility of the surroundings provided the perfect backdrop for a restful night’s sleep. Though I had hoped to find petrified wood, its absence did not detract from the beauty of the natural landscape.

Navigating to the campsite posed a minor challenge despite the provided directions. Eventually with Nick assisting I found the campsite around midnight. Nevertheless, the secluded location added to the allure of the experience, offering a sense of escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Admittedly, the unpaved dirt roads leading to the campsite stretched for about 4 miles, which came as a surprise. However, this added element of adventure only served to enhance the overall rustic charm of the location. I should add that the only piece of instruction missing is the left turn on cattleman’s which is the left just before sun country’s campground. Good luck finding the camp area!

In retrospect, while there were minor inconveniences, they were far outweighed by the peace and tranquility that permeated every corner of this area. I would recommend this hidden gem to anyone seeking a serene retreat amidst nature’s embrace. My sincerest thanks to Nick and for providing such a memorable experience.
