About

State Park

Picacho Peak State Park Campground is a solid spot for anyone looking to camp in the heart of Arizona's Sonoran Desert. Located near Picacho, AZ, this campground offers a unique experience with its stunning views of Picacho Peak and the surrounding saguaro cacti. It's open all year, so you can plan your visit whenever it suits you.

The campground has a mix of tent and RV sites, some with electric hookups. While there's no water at individual sites, you can find drinking water and a sanitary dump station on the premises. The showers and bathrooms are modern and clean, which is always a plus. If you're into hiking, you're in luck. There are several trails nearby, including the popular Sunset Trail that leads up to Picacho Peak.

Visitors have mentioned that the sunsets here are absolutely breathtaking, especially if you snag a spot on the western edge of the campground. The sites are generally level and some even come with covered picnic tables, which is a nice touch.

For those who need to stay connected, cell service is decent with both Verizon and T-Mobile. And if you're into stargazing, the dark skies here make for some excellent nighttime viewing.

One thing to note is that you might hear some road noise from I-10 and the occasional train, but most folks find it manageable. Overall, Picacho Peak State Park Campground is a great place to set up camp, enjoy the desert scenery, and explore the nearby attractions.

Beautiful campground in the saguaro

This is a great little camping spot nestled below Picacho Peak just north of Tucson. The campground is spread through the saguaros, and other cactus so you are right in with them. There isn’t much shade so the campground is only open September thru May. It closes during the hot months of summer. Several sites did have covered picnic tables. Sites have water and electricity, some have sewer. There is a dump station also. The sites are level. There are modern showers and bathrooms. Convenient to several hiking trails. In

Great state park

I enjoyed my stay here for 2 days. Had a great time hiking the Sunset Trail to Picacho Peak.

PROS - large campsites, picnic tables and fire pits on each site. Some sites have a covered pavilion. Great hot showers. Separate dish washing station. Clean facilities. Electric hookups.

CONS - No hot water or trash cans at the dishwashing station. Can hear road noise from I-10, but you get use to it

A good spot for a night or two

Another newer, paved State Park CG with 85 sites, all electric. No water or sewer hook-ups. Restrooms with flush toilet, showers also available. You can see and hear the traffic on I-10 about a half mile to the east. Some sites are spaced further apart then others but overall, decently distanced.

We stayed 2 nights in March of 2019. planned to climb the peak but ended up biking around on the the hilly roads.

Amazing sunsets!!

Love this place.

Great views and epic sunsets. We stayed on the western edge of "C" loop so the sunsets were unobstructed and magnificent. The peak looms over the Campground and the layout is perfect to take in all the surroundings. There's no water, but were accustomed to dry camping. There is a dump station and sites are level. We can't wait to stay here again.

Pricey but really nice!

$30 /night in winter. Really nicely maintained. No water available tho. Probably due to drought? Hot showers clean restrooms. Nice sites with paved pads and picnic tables. Gorgeous views of the peak driving in. Saguaro abound. Gate closed at 10pm and office closes at 5 but you can self check in on non/reserved sites.

Beautiful Sonora Desert Park

Great RV park. Plenty of room between pads. 50 amp Electrical, no water hookups, but 100 gallons lasted us six nights.

Great hiking trails of for all levels. The self guided nature trail was by far the most informative of the four we visited throughout AZ and NM.

Bring ear plugs

Campground is nice and clean. Friendly folks, easy check in, fire rings, beautiful views, amazing sunset and sunrise ect. However we found the noise from the I-10 and train intrusive. We will seek campgrounds further away from interstates and trains next time.

Worth a night or two for the hiking.

Great place close to Tucson

This is a great place to camp near Tucson with great views and lots of hiking. If you plan to climb Picacho bring lots of water and gloves. There are parts of the climb you must use cables to pull yourself up. They have electrical hookups, but no water due to a water shortage. There is also a dump station to “unload” prior to departure from the campgrounds. I believe there is also WiFi available for a fee if you need it. Personally speaking, we go camping to unplug so we try not to use cellular or Wi-Fi connections.

Fantastic Park!

Stayed here for a quite awhile almost on accident but we ended up loving it! The Park was VERY clean everywhere, not a speck of trash anywhere! Campground is away from the cities of Tuscon and Phoenix but both can be accessed quite easily. Groceries are about 25 minutes away unless you want to go to a dollar general in which case is only 7 minutes away. Beware of the shell stations nearby, both the gas and concessions are very expensive. The park has electric at all the sites and there is a dump station in the park but no water or sewer at the sites. There are large bathrooms with multiple showers and toilets though. Be sure to bring plenty of water as it is a desert and they are very tight on their water supply and don't have open spickets available to campers. The park has some amazing hikes though, one of which being a very challenging Peak hike to the top! Be sure to bring lots of water!!!!! Overall very spacious state park with great staff, very clean and organized, and not to expensive. We will definitely be coming back!

Quiet and close to Tucson

Took a Cruise America rv to the park as a first time RVr. Had electric hook up which was much needed as frigid out. Site was clean and spaced well away from others.

Clean toilets and showers available with blazing hot water, and firewood for $7 a bundle from park office. Trash could be dumped on site as well.

All the rangers were wonderful and super friendly. We did the 2.6 mile hike and it was athletic and fun. The dump site was not working when we went through.

Great views!

We were only here one night but we loved the views, the quiet and space between campsites. We already booked another stay when we head back to Florida. The only downside was they have no water because of the drought but that was the only issue. Park staff were great and check in was super quick and easy. We took our two pups and they loved exploring the park. We have added this site to our list of favorites. 💖👍

Neat place

This camp ground is nice, the camp sites are set up uniquely with rock boundaries. The hiking was very cool. The weird thing is that at night when the air got cooler, the highway noise and trains got way LOUDER. You didn't notice the highway or trains during the day, could barely hear any of it, but as soon as it got dark.... WOW, was it noisy. I'm glad I went there but I don't need to do it again.
