The Pinhoti Trail is a National Recreation Trail for hiking only. There are 150 miles of the trail in Alabama and 150 miles in Georgia and it connects to the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail in north Georgia. 140 of the Alabama miles are in the Talladega National Forest which borders the camp property.
The Chief Ladiga Trail is a paved converted railbed with 34 miles in Alabama (Anniston to the Georgia line). The trail allows use by hikers, bicyclists and skateboarders. It connects to the Silver Comet Trail in Georgia and continues over 60 miles to the outskirts of Atlanta. The most beautiful portion of this trail is in Cleburne County and it is the most recently completed portion of the trail as well.
The Talladega National Forest borders the property on three sides. The Talladega National Forest consists of 392,567 acres of protected public wilderness in North and Central Alabama. Pine Glen Recreation Area offers camping sites for 21 campsites, cooking grills, sanitary facilities, fishing, hiking, and access to the Pinhoti Trail. Use of Pine Glen Recreation Area is on a first come, first serve basis. Its a favorite with hunters because it is centrally located in the Choccolocco Wildlife Management Area.
A 73-acre park, located off Blacks Bluff Road, and listed on the National Registry of Historical Landmarks, Lock and Dam offers some of the best crappie and striper fishing in North Georgia. The park is prepared for both RV and primitive tent camping. Select sites feature direct sewer hook-up, river views, picnic pavilions and shelter, fire rings, restroom, shower and laundry facilities, fishing and nature trails. Other amenities include horseshoe pits, open play areas and an observation overlook. The Coosa River Trading Post offers fishing and camping supplies, an exhibition center, live bait, tackle, fishing and hunting licenses and a boat ramp.

Red Top Mountain State Park is beautiful and Lake Allatoona is large. Campsite 50 is a premium tent only walk-in site (a few dollars more). It sits on a point that sticks out in the lake. There is no shade or tree cover, so it's not "private". There are 3 other sites near by on the walk-in area and there are no boundaries or barriers between so your neighbors are in full view. There is no electric near the tent pad, the electric pole is 150+ feet away near the parking area. You probably could run 175 feet of electric extension cord... but it would have to run past the three other sites... so don't plan for electric. There is water right by the pad with a ton of pressure. The tent pad was large but extremely hard to drive tent stakes into... smaller stakes worked better. The bathhouse was an uphill hike probably 300 ft away but was modern and clean with hot showers and good water pressure. The park is clean and scenic. The staff is very courteous, friendly and helpful. There are plenty of opportunities to hike, fish and boat.
This park is about 30-40 minutes outside of Atlanta right off of I-75. If you are in a tent... you will hear I-75 traffic all night so keep in mind, that while it looks like country, you are not deep in nature... the drone of the highway will remind you. There is a train that blows its whistle that will wake you up 3 times each night and also remind you that you are not deep in the woods. The winding roads through the park outside the campground also seemed to be very popular with motorcyclists who like loud pipes.
The name Red Top Mountain is derived from the red soil in the area that was popular for the mining of abundant iron ore. But don't look for "mountains" here... you have to travel further north for more dramatic elevation.
Overall, a nice park, pretty scenery but not as secluded, quiet and relaxing as expected for tent camping.

GuideRecently stayed a couple of nights and was mostly impressed with the state park. I’m a tent camper but if I had an RV or trailer, I would definitely have trouble getting into my site (78). Many of the other sites I saw would have similar problems for trailer campers, as well. The park is in close proximity to I-75, so I could hear the distant sound of big rigs and the occasional police sirens. There is also railroad tracks somewhere that are close enough to hear train whistles in the wee hours of the morning. But the scenery of Lake Alatoona was beautiful and the staff I dealt with were all friendly and helpful. The bathroom facilities I used were very clean.

After taking our granddaughter to Screaming Eagle Zip-line Adventures, located at the gorgeous Lodge, we visited the Campground…and it’s amazing! At the office, we were helped by Rocky, who was friendly and knowledgeable! We received CG info and a map, as well as rates. We are already planning our next trip to visit! The general store was stocked with necessities, as well as souvenirs. Of course we had to get some ice cream! There are several types of sites, monthly, cabins and tent camping. There are boat slips (local rentals) and a Pavilion on the water, basketball and tennis courts, playground, shady dog park, splash pad, and clean bathhouses. Firewood and ice can be purchased at the store. There are also many trails to hike and bike . It is easy to see that this SP is well maintained! The SP Lodge is worth visiting, which has a nice restaurant. LGSP has a golf course, and the quaint town is close by and has shopping and several restaurants.

Great place to camp near the cloudland canyon. The campsite 8 that we camped on was far from parking and restroom, so you might wanna choose the sites near to parking. Be prepared to carry things for quite a walk. Bring something to carry water to your site from water filling station near the restrooms. But, the campsites are well spaced so you will have the privacy you need. There are lots of beautiful hiking places nearby.
RangerThe sites are very close together here and you can expect it to usually be booked up. However, the facilities are in great condition and there are lots of short trails to amazing vistas.
They also sell $6 firewood, which is the cheapest I’ve seen in a while. Checking in is confusing because they don’t send you any info on what to do or how to get to your site (there’s two campgrounds, don’t go to the wrong one). You are supposed to stop at the visitor center to check in.

Quiet campground tucked away on Lookout Mountain, with super friendly and helpful staff. The campground is very well maintained, has a large pool, playground and giant in-ground bounce ballon for the kids, and a fenced in dog park complete with slides and playground equipment for dogs! There is a walking trails around the campground. The bathroom\shower house was impressive to say the least, very clean and renovated.

Bathrooms/showers are very nice…each guest gets a private room with shower, sink and toilet. Dog park is very nice, and trails are good. Campground is quite hilly but our site (15 pull through) was level. Only suggestion would be a better stocked store.
GuideWe stayed in the West Rim Campground and i love the way it's laid out. Site 34 has multi levels, one for the camper, one which could be a sitting or tent area, and one for the firepit. It backs up to woods but also has an open area that you could play numerous games(cornhole, football, frisbee etc) It also has a picnic table, grill and fire ring(all were in amazing shape). We purchased firewood from the visitor center but you can also purchase from camp host. Currently it's$6 a bundle and they keep it in a cute little outhouse looking storage building lol. It is a very clean, well maintained and quiet(while we were there) campground. If you are even slightly considering staying here, just go ahead and book it. It's an amazing campground surrounded by an equally amazing State Park.

ScoutThis place seems to have it all. The hikes are diverse from walking along the edge of a canyon with beautiful vistas to trekking through the gulch with canyon walls towering overhead. The waterfalls are beautiful too although they were all but non-existent after the recent dry weather. The campsites offer good privacy with clean facilities.
ScoutWe stayed three nights in primitive camping and it was fantastic. Our site was right on the water and far away from any other campers. The RV camping is not as secluded. Bath houses were very clean and tons of fun things for kids to do around the park.
TravelerFirst, I’ve stayed here many times tent camping with more than one tent on one site with no issues. We took a camper this time and met up with some family who would be staying in a tent. We set up site and hung up a hammock, and within minutes, an employee came and rudely told us our set up wasn’t allowed. We had to take down our hammock (never had that happen anywhere else before), and forced us to pay an extra $75 to rent the neighboring site for our family to set up their tent for the weekend. When they came back around, they said, “You didn’t have to move your tent, you just had to rent the extra site.” It made zero sense, especially when we had noted at reservation that we’d have more than one vehicle, a tent, a camper, and 4 adults + 3 kids. Next came check out. We waited for 3 hours for our turn to use the dump site, we were all packed up and ready to go at 9:30am. To be such a large park, more than one dump site is needed. There’s also a ton of traffic going in and out, so it wasn’t super quiet or anything. We won’t be back, it’s overrated, over priced, and run by rude people.

The last time I camped at Pocket Rec Area was a few years ago. Since then, they've added picnic tables, metal fire rings with grill grates, and lantern poles at the campsites, as well as bear-proof trash bins and water spigots scattered throughout the campground. There's a centrally-located bathroom, no showers. The driveways are asphalt now, used to just be dirt. A ranger came by and told us they plan to add electric hookups in 2025. In 2024, reservations will be made online through Recreation.gov, but the ranger told us they would still allow same-day reservations.
We stayed for two nights in October and felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. There were only a few other campers, none near us. With ATB senior pass, we paid $7.50/night.
All the sites are heavily wooded and most have trees or large rocks very close on both sides of the driveway. The driveways are not straight, so you have to jog to one side halfway through backing in. It's tricky to make that slight turn while avoiding the trees and rocks. We weren't able to extend our awning all the way because of the trees. If you have slides, you may not be able to put them out.
There is an easy trail inside the campground and several more not far from the entrance.

TravelerThis was our first stop on a 2-week circuit through TN, GA and FL. We stayed for two nights while attending the National Cornbread Festival in S. Pittsburgh, TN. The campground has been around for a long time and shows that the owners take great pride in maintaining the property while expanding the camp footprint. We were at site #22, graveled and level. There was enough room between sites to not feel like you were on top of each other. We were impressed with the amenities for families, the office/store had recently been expanded and renovated and a great bathroom/shower/laundry area had been added. All very well maintained on a daily basis.
