Swimming, fishing, kayaking, and hiking all come together at this compact Texas Parks and Wildlife campground built around a small motorboat-free lake in Bosque County. The water is the clear focal point here, and as one reviewer put it, "all sites have lake access nearby," whether you're in a tent on the west ridge or an RV with full hookups on the east side. Paddleboards and kayaks are available to rent by the hour, and the lake's sheltered size makes it well-suited to both beginners and families with kids.
The trail network circles the lake and branches out across the surrounding terrain. The Bosque Trail runs roughly 2.5 miles around the entire lake, crossing the dam and passing lily pad-covered coves along the way. The Shinnery Ridge Trail starts paved and ADA-accessible before climbing a ridgeline, and Brittany S. notes that "each trail is very much its own with different scenery, rock formations, and trees." Armadillos and rabbits are commonly spotted. The Bee Ledge, a rock formation with a history of indigenous use, is worth a stop along the way.
Sites vary considerably depending on which side of the lake you book. East-side sites sit close to restrooms, showers, and drinking water. West-side primitive sites, including those on Shinnery Ridge, put you right on the lake but place bathrooms roughly a mile away. Several RV sites are pull-through with full hookups including 50-amp service, though reviewers note many sit in full sun with limited space to spread out. Sticker burrs in the grass and rocky ground on some sites are worth knowing about before you pack.
Noise from the nearby highway is audible from certain sites, particularly the primitive ones closest to the road. Cell service is limited to nonexistent in most of the park. The town of Meridian, about five miles away, has a grocery store, gas station, and restaurants, making it easy to resupply without a long drive. Firewood is sold on-site at all hours. Reservations are available and recommended, especially for summer weekends when the swimming area draws crowds. Campers using the American Inn & RV Park in town have a nearby fallback if the park fills. Book early for east-side sites with hookups if proximity to facilities matters to your group.
