Fishing at Stockade Lake draws many campers to this campground first. As Sabrina W. put it, "Fishing in Stockade Lake was insane," with her son pulling bluegill on a fly rod from a lake that sits just down the hill from the sites. Across the highway, Black Hills National Forest Bismarck Lake Campground sits adjacent to Bismarck Lake, which is stocked for trout and within easy walking distance. Osprey have been spotted fishing between the two lakes, and bison occasionally pass close to the road through the park.
Sites at Stockade North are spread across open terrain with gravel pads, aluminum picnic tables, and fire rings. Spacing between sites varies considerably. Some reviewers found neighbors closer than they preferred, while others landed on sites with substantial room between them. Site 14 has been singled out as one of the more isolated spots in the loop. Tent campers should note the topography can be uneven, and photos on the reservation map may not accurately reflect how level a site actually is. RVs up to 50 feet are accommodated, though narrow, curved roads have given larger rigs trouble backing in.
The campground provides electric hookups, drinking water from spigots accessible from the road, flush and vault toilets, and showers. One reviewer called the shower setup the best at any campground they had used, citing a locking stall door and a dry changing area. There is no dump station or sewer hookup on site. Firewood availability at the campground itself is inconsistent across seasons, though it can be sourced nearby.
Reservations are required, even for same-day arrivals, and the season runs mid-May through late August. The location puts Mount Rushmore, Wind Cave National Park, Crazy Horse, and Jewel Cave all within roughly 15 to 30 minutes. Custer State Park's Wildlife Loop is a short drive, and the park's scale surprises many first-time visitors. Campers planning a broader Black Hills itinerary will find campgrounds near Custer State Park if this campground is full during peak summer weeks.
Stockade South Campground — Custer State Park sits less than a mile away and is worth checking as an alternative if your preferred dates at Stockade North are unavailable. For a first visit to the Black Hills, this campground gives direct access to the lake and puts most of the region's main draws within a single tank of gas.
Description
The granite peaks and rolling plains are calling. The clear mountain waters are inviting and the open ranges are waiting to be discovered. Bring your family to Custer State Park and let yourself run wild.
Encompassing 71,000 acres in the Black Hills, Custer State Park is home to abundant wildlife and adventure; camping, hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, or relaxing, there’s something here for everyone.
Feeding and disturbing park wildlife are against park regulations. While the animals within the park are used by visitors and vehicles, they are still wild animals. Please remain in your vehicle or stay at least 100 yards from bison, elk, and other animals.
