A wooded mountain setting and a mix of accommodation types define Custer Mountain Cabins and Campground, a small privately operated property open May through November in the Black Hills outside Custer, South Dakota. The campground runs a range of options from tent sites to sleeping cabins to full-size cabins, with full hookup sites featuring 50-amp electric, water, and sewer connections and a maximum RV length of 65 feet. Tent campers have dedicated sites, including more remote walk-in spots for those willing to carry gear a short distance.
Staff responsiveness comes up consistently across reviews. The washrooms and shower house draw repeated mention for being kept clean, and the on-site volunteers and owners are described as attentive and helpful, including one instance where staff offered a mini cabin to guests after their tent flooded in a heavy rainstorm. "Small campground nestled in the mountains," notes Brooke T., who also points out that public land behind the grounds has mica and quartz in the hillsides, making it a draw for rock hounds. A small playground is on-site for families, and reviewers mention occasional live music.
Road access has a rough-access warning, so towing rigs should plan accordingly. Some road noise is audible during the day, though reviewers report quieter conditions at night. The campground sits within easy reach of Custer State Park, and nearby properties like American Presidents Cabins Campground & Resort and Bearded Buffalo Resort give visitors additional options in the corridor. Campers who want a smaller, staffed base for exploring the Black Hills will find this property a practical fit.
