Whether it’s Halloween candy in October or pumpkin pie in November, Autumn is when my sweet tooth emerges. Fall marks the beginning of the holiday season and a time for festive drinks and baked goods. As the days get shorter, fall camping trips are always marked with a little less time on the trails and a little more time cozying up around a crackling fire.
If you are looking for a maple-glazed pick-me-up while hiking, some spiced apple cobbler after dinner, or a late-night mug of spiked cider, you came to the right place! Tame that inner sugar craving with these sweet treats and warm drinks, which are sure to keep you feeling warm and cozy as the temperatures drop.

2. Pumpkin Spice Monkey Bread Foil Packets

Canned cinnamon rolls get a fall makeover in this easy foil-packet treat. Cutting the rolls into bite-size pieces helps them cook evenly over the fire, and a spoonful of pumpkin turns the icing into a pumpkin glaze. It’s adapted from Gimme Some Grilling’s cinnamon monkey bread foil packets.
Ingredients
- 1 can (12.4 oz) cinnamon rolls with icing
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1½ tsp pumpkin pie spice, plus a pinch for the glaze
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 4 tbsp cold butter, cut into small cubes
- ¼ cup chopped pecans (optional)
- 2 tbsp pumpkin butter or pumpkin purée
- Nonstick cooking spray and heavy-duty aluminum foil
At home: Mix the granulated sugar and pumpkin pie spice in a gallon zip-top bag.
At camp:
- Spray two large sheets of heavy-duty foil with nonstick spray.
- Set the icing aside. Cut each cinnamon roll into 4 pieces, drop them into the bag, and shake to coat.
- Divide the pieces between the foil sheets. Scatter the butter, brown sugar, and pecans over the top. Fold the foil into sealed packets, leaving a little room above the dough so it can rise.
- Cook on a grate over hot coals for 15 to 20 minutes, turning the packets a few times, until the dough is cooked through.
- While they cook, stir the pumpkin butter and a pinch of pumpkin pie spice into the icing.
- Open the packets carefully, since the steam is hot, and drizzle with the pumpkin glaze.
Camp tip: Keep the packets on a grate above the coals, not in them, because the sugar burns fast. Open one packet at 15 minutes to check, and if the centers are still doughy, reseal it and give it 5 more minutes.

After the sun sets, the air can get quite chilly. Our favorite tips for staying warm? A campfire and some hot drinks to keep you feeling toasty inside and out. This bourbon apple cider is sure to warm you up! Throw a few cinnamon sticks and spices into a pot of cider over your camp stove and finish it off with a splash of bourbon in your insulated mug to keep you feeling cozy far beyond dusk. Of course, it’s kid-friendly without the booze, too.

5. Halloween S’mores

Looking to get back to basics with the classic campfire s’ more? No matter the season, marshmallows will always be on the menu for camping adventures. During October I love to use the surplus of candy to mix up the classics, instead of ye olde Hershey’s chocolate, I like to pop a peanut butter cup or perhaps a Snickers in my s’mores.
