Recently, we had the chance to connect with The Camp Kit. The Camp Kit is exactly what it sounds like: a fully stocked camping kit, on demand and delivered to your door.

CampKit Backpacking for 2

The Camp Kit provides fully stocked, ready-to-go camping kits. Currently available in San Fransisco Bay Area.

The Dyrt and The Camp Kit have the same passion: making it easier for people to spend time outdoors. The Outdoor Industry Association estimates that 40 million Americans go camping every year.

40 million is over 12% of the US population, which is significant but still could be bigger. We’re curious to see how that number changes with better access to camping gear, as is made available by The Camp Kit.

The Camp Kit offers several different kits depending on your trip, group size, and needs. You can get a one person or two person backpacking camping kit, or a two person car camping kit (which does not come with a backpack).

Kits have everything you need: a sleeping bag, sleeping pad, camping pillow, backpack, headlamps, cups and bowls, and utensils for each person. The two-person kits also come with a stove and pot.

Right now, The Camp Kit services are limited to just the San Francisco Bay Area.

We caught up with The Camp Kit cofounders Megan Petruccelli and Kayla Ravenscraft to get the Dyrt on their new business.

Dyrt: How would you describe The Camp Kit in one sentence?

The Camp Kit: Adventure Packed.

Dyrt: What is your favorite thing about your Camp Kits?

The Camp Kit: The kits make the process easy! They are made so that you can check everything off of your packing list with one easy lift of the Camp Kit into your trunk.

Dyrt: How does The Camp Kit work exactly?

The Camp Kit: Don’t have what you need for backpacking or car camping? We provide EVERYTHING you need for camping and backpacking in a simple kit delivered to your door. Go to thecampkit.com and simply place an order for the gear you need. We deliver the Kit right to your door. You get outside & go on your adventure. When you get home, throw it all back in the box it came in and ship it back with the prepaid label.

Dyrt: Why do you guys rent equipment instead of selling gear like everyone else does?

The Camp Kit: Our goal is to simplify the process of getting started and getting outside for people who might not have the means, the time, the storage, or the gear knowledge to do so. We found that people living in the city, a lot of the time in smaller living quarters, are always on the go and don’t necessarily know where to start. We want to make getting outside easier. No need to store the gear or deal with the logistics of figuring out everything they need. Just order it, have it delivered, and get outside. We want to eliminate some excuses people use that keep them from getting outside!!

Dyrt: What are your geographic focus areas now and in the future?

The Camp Kit: Right now we serve the Bay Area. We hope to expand into Portland and possibly the rest of the country next year.

Dyrt: Give us The Dyrt on your favorite designated campground?

The Camp Kit: I don’t know if we can pick just one! That’s too hard, but since we must, we will narrow it down to one – plus one more. One on the ocean in CA and one in the mountains of CA. First, for the beach, we would highly recommend Limekiln State Park in Big Sur. While you can find other campgrounds with big views, they are up off the beach and toasty toasty in the summer. Limekiln is amazing because it’s a mix of the redwoods AND the beach. The campsites are nestled back into the redwood forest; therefore you don’t roast in the sun all day! You can walk about 500 feet out and under a gorgeous bridge to this isolated beach. It really is a magical place. If you’re lucky snag a campsite off the creek!

Our favorite mountain campground is Goose Lake in Tahoe National Forest. You can pull right off the “highway” into the campground surrounded by a lake on 3 sides. Camp right on the edge of the lake with a view of the sierra buttes. It doesn’t get much better than that!
