Beyond Clothing, a Seattle, Washington company, has created a modular clothing system designed for the most brutal survival situations. From arctic whiteouts to mountaintop wind storms, you can trust Beyond Clothing with your life.
So, what’s the big deal — what is “modular” and why is it a “clothing system”? Why not just clothing brand? Beyond Clothing stays true to their name and designs super technical apparel that is, quite literally, beyond standard clothing. It is an integrated system of layering with everything from simple baselayers to super technical rain-proof and wind-proof fabrics. And it comes with a clear system for proper use. Beyond Clothing is a lifeline, and a masterful feat of engineering.
How Beyond Clothing’s Survival System Works
While the technical fabrics, the construction, and the combinations to create each piece may be complex, using the system is incredibly simple. They have a numbering system that runs from A1 to A7, which roughly corresponds with mild to extreme weather. So, in mild conditions you might use A1, A2, and A3 pieces. When you find yourself in a true extreme-cold survival situation, you’ll want to the A1 all the way up to the A7.
A1-A2 BASELAYERS
“Our Aether and Krios Baselayers are the foundation of your layering system. Built out of 4-way stretch synthetic materials with anti-microbial gussets and underarms, these garments are designed to move moisture efficiently from the body and keep you cool during high energy output.”
Check out all the A1/A2 Baselayers here.
A3 INSULATION LAYERS
“Our mid weight performance layers can be worn as insulation layers, or stand along outer garments depending on the environment. These lightweight loft and fleece layers are breathable and highly wind resistant.”

A4 WIND PROTECTION
“The Wind Shirt and pant are designed for lightweight wind protection. Built out of a DWR treated nylon ripstop with 4-way stretch arm and crotch gussets, these garments are extremely packable and offer excellent protection against light rain and snow.”

A5 SOFTSHELLS
“A5 Softshell layers are designed to protect you against wind and rain during active use. These outer layers are built out of an extremely breathable and 4-way stretch material that allows for excellent mobility and protection from the elements.”

A6 RAIN PROTECTION
“A6 Rain layers offer complete wind and water protection in static environments. These garments have fully taped waterproof seams and are built out of wind and waterproof 3 layer Goretex. Our A6 layers are also extremely packable and abrasion resistant.”

A7 HIGH LOFT
“Our A7 layers offer warmth in extreme cold environments. These layers are built with DWR coated nylon ripstop and Climashield® APEX Insulation. The APEX insulation will keep you warm, retain heat when wet and will dry much faster than down.”

Layering is as simple as checking Beyond Clothing’s training guide, where they recommend which layers to use in which climates. Taken together, Beyond Clothing is a brilliant system that you can trust to take you where you need to go — and beyond.
