Managed by the Bureau of Land Management's places to camp around BLM Land — Rawlins Field Office, Teton Reservoir Campground sits roughly 20 miles south of Rawlins on a dirt road, placing it squarely in the open sagebrush prairie of south-central Wyoming. The reservoir itself is small, and the campground around it is compact, with somewhere between five and eight designated sites arranged near the water's edge, most equipped with picnic tables, fire rings, and some with grills. Two vault toilets serve the area. No fee is charged.
Wind is the defining feature of this camp. Reviewers across multiple seasons consistently flag overnight gusts strong enough to collapse tents with weakened poles and send unsecured gear across the site. The ground is gravelly and rocky, making staking a tent difficult, and the open terrain provides little natural windbreak. Dave L. notes finding "a site that had a wind screen so it was easier to get relief from the wind," which suggests site selection matters here. Those sleeping in vehicles report a more comfortable experience overall.
The campground is free and sees moderate use, though it can fill on weekends and during hunting season in fall. Nearby, Teton Reservoir BLM Dispersed provides overflow options just 0.3 miles west, and the Teton Reservoir Recreation Site sits adjacent. A small boat ramp gives access to the reservoir for fishing. No potable water is available on site, so all drinking water must be brought in.
Kate B. notes it's "easy road in so could bring a trailer or RV of any size," though other reviewers describe the access road as rough in spots, so conditions after rain are worth considering. The campground does not allow pets. Bring firewood, as the surrounding landscape is dry and bare with nothing to scavenge, and plan to secure or stow all gear before dark.
Description
Set in the rolling sage grasslands of the Great Divide Basin, this reservoir becomes a watery oasis under the bright summer skies. Fishing for trout in the reservoir and surrounding streams is good; this is also a popular non-motorized water sports area. This is a free site with 5 campsites, vault toilets, boat ramp, and day use parking. Campsites have picnic tables, fire ring/grills, and parking spurs with no pull-throughs. No horses allowed in campground. Typical use season is from June 1st through November 15 because access roads become impassable after heavy rain and snow belt wherein they get extremely muddy.
