Few campgrounds offer the seclusion that comes with having just a handful of sites scattered among tall trees. Chipmunk Rapids sits within the Nicolet National Forest, accessible by both road and water, though campers should expect rough access conditions on the drive in.
The campground's proximity to both river and lake creates opportunities for paddling and fishing. Wildlife viewing proves reliable here, with deer and turkeys commonly spotted around the sites. One camper noted hearing wolves at night during their stay. The sites themselves receive more sun than the tree coverage might suggest, which can be a consideration during warm summer visits. Clean pit toilets serve the small campground, and the forest setting provides access to area trails.
An artesian well at the entrance draws visitors specifically for the water quality. Art S. notes that "even if you camp elsewhere the water is worth a visit." Cell service reaches the campground, and standard amenities like picnic tables and fire rings are provided. The small size means the area can feel completely empty during slower periods, while nearby Lost Lake Campground (WI) offers an alternative less than a mile away.
This spot works well for campers who prioritize solitude over amenities and don't mind navigating rougher forest roads to reach their site.
