These sites can be reserved in March every year during the Group Camping Lottery and remaining sites will open after the lottery is completed.______ Primitive zone camping: These campsites are designated for groups of 1-5 people. These sites are for the truly hardcore backpackers. Primitive zone camping is not a specific site but provides the option of choosing a backcountry area to camp. This type of camping experience has NO amenities. There are specific guidelines on where to camp for this type of experience. Sailor Springs is a small three-site campground located just two miles outside of the picturesque tourist town of Bayfield, WI. 2023 will be our first year of operation and we’re excited to host campers on the property and provide a unique camping experience.
The campground is spread out over 5 acres of forest on Bresette Hill Road. After parking at the trailhead, you’ll gather your bags and hike into your glamping site. The trail winds through the woods, leading you first to a valley where the seasonal Clark Creek runs through in the spring. The first two campsites are on the other side of this valley. The trail can be steep in spots and requires a moderate level of fitness and mobility to reach the secluded campsites. The third site is a bit farther into the forest, the little A-frame cabin, Anchor sits on the edge of the spring-fed Brickyard Creek that flows year-round.

Our log cabins are rustic with electric, propane heat, mini fridge, microwave and screened porches with a log swing overlooking Wildhurst Creek. Stayed here in September for a few days, and occupied site 1 and 2. Sites are good sized and clean. Our two sites were great, but if I didn't care about being near the lake, I would look at the new sites they put in the wooded area. They were a little more "remote", The clientele mostly consisted of fisherman and bird hunters when I was here, so it seems to attract the more long term stays and not overnighters. The bathroom / shower combination is adequate and is reminiscent of my younger days at summer camp. They have some playground equipment both at the main loop and the wooded loop, this proved to be a lifesaver for my 4 year old. I also found, since this is further from town, it is very dark here and great for star gazing.

We stayed at Wildhurst about 20 years ago and had a great time, even got to see an mini-air show overhead with USAF F-16s out of Duluth doing maneuvers overhead. So, when the State Forest campgrounds were closed last spring for storm cleanup, we decided to take a cabin there. Not going back. The new owners are trying; I'll give them that. They're friendly, the little restaurant isn't bad, but the latrines (outhouses) really need to be rebuilt. I mean REALLY. Lime on the toilet seat. Early in the season and the biffys by our cabin were horrible smelling, (And I DO understand that they are open toilets. I was the ranger in a state forest campground for 26 years and had to clean weekly and pump out every year 12 of them.) and if the wind was wrong, we could smell it in our cabin. Cabins were smallish, but comparable to a state park camper cabin, they need updates, paint, roofing, and leveling the floors.
Wildhurst has potential. I wish it was as good as it used to be,

Campground is well maintained, sites in the woods are spaced apart. Sites closer to Lake Superior are tight, some are VERY SHORT and tent sites only.

Had a lovely stay here on August 18th. You can't beat the price ($14/night for electric up to 50 amps). The woman I booked the reservation through was really nice and laid back. The campground is quiet, chill and safe. The woman's restroom was clean, despite some mildew on the shower ceiling (no big deal). Dog-friendly and free WiFi. Great option if you're looking for something near the Apostle Islands that's inexpensive and includes electricity. I stayed in spot 2, which is near the bathrooms and has a picnic table and fire pit.

What a great vibe at this campground. The side we were on had sites on a hill, but each site is pull-thru and very level. There’s enough spacing to make each site feel private. The swimming pond is a nice touch. It’s our first time here, but we’re already planning a return trip next spring.
TravelerWe liked the easy drive through sites with full hookup. The campsites were tiered into the hill. This helped sound proof the campsites. There was a large group a few sites down from us that we didn't hear until we walked past their site. Some sites also had a view overlooking the pond and Lake Superior. We could see the full moon reflecting off of Lake Superior. Our site did not have this view but we saw it on a walk in the campground. The unique looking cabins were on the pond and looked to be very convenient for families with children who want to be in the water most of the time. We loved all the amenities of Water, Sewer, Electric and WiFi. We loved the close access to Bayfield and the water excursions we took from Bayfield. One of the highlights for our group was the excellent golf course close to the campground. I gave my review a 4 star because the day we were leaving the campsites lost water pressure and had no water to get ready to leave. I believe the owners will be addressing this problem. They were working on it while we were there.

GuideLoved how peaceful this park was. I stayed at site 40, which backs up to the woods. Site 41 is a little close, but I would still pick this same spot when returning. Bathrooms were clean. HOWEVER, beware of the mosquitoes! They were everywhere in the bathroom making showering intense to be quick. They were so bad that I eventually cut my trip short. Would go back, but later in the year.

Location is great if you're looking to do some exploring. Was very quiet even though it was close to Labor Day weekend, and for the size of the campground. I highly recommend doing some sort of tour of the Apostle Islands by boat and taking the ferry to Madeline Island.

ScoutThe greenhorn Campsite Inspector get a thumbs down for personality. We cut our weekend short after only one night. We could not take the park admin who was checking campsites. After 3 visits tipped over into what felt like harassment...the rain would have been nicer to deal with. We just packed it up and went home...which is right around the corner. We're local and it's the first time we decided to camp in over 30years. It was a bummer to feel so unwelcomed there. We will continue to enjoy the beautiful surrounding and hope that maybe the staff there learns a few valuable lessons on beside manners.

GuideWe stayed in site 55 which is spacious and it was easy to find a level spot. The sites are nicely spaced, the base is reddish sandy dirt that tracks. We had enough sun access on a fully sunny day to top off the Jackery and phones, not the case with partly cloudy. The shower house is huge and kept very clean. The cell signal at our site came and went but it was stronger in many other locations in the park. Recycling was available for cans and bottles only. Copper Falls is a great place to hike and ideal for riding bikes to access points (which is why we got the bikes!) I was reading Halfway to Heaven and while we weren’t climbing mountains our hike did make me feel a connection with the stories. Arriving I declared I wanted to a bear and an elk. We didn’t see an elk. The first morning a juvenile black bear came into our site lured by the breakfast that was cooked outside. Fortunately due to the concentration of mosquitoes we were eating inside. Turns out it’s the first one in the campgrounds in 10 years! We spent a couple of hours in Ashland and enjoyed our trip, loved our lunch at the brewery!

The campground was kept up. the grass was mowed. It is less than a mile to Lake Michigan. We would stay there again if we were in the area.
GuideFirst time up to this park, and camping for the weekend. Campsites are very well sized and spaced out pretty good. There are only vault toilets on the north side, but flushing one’s on the south side. There’s a concession stand towards the north end of the park. They sell snacks, park souvenirs, apparel, and ice cream! This is a very family friendly place. All of the campers were super friendly.
RangerThe camp ground at our location was new. They are expanding. The facilities are Brand new. There are two side to this CG. We were in the newer area of the CG. Our site is located on the side of the hill and very level. The only thing at that one site is the spacing to accommodate having your camp fire. It was a little close to your neighbor. Not enough space to have full camp chairs around. That one site (79) I would say best for just passing through. The other site are pretty good. Other than that, the owners are awesome!!! Easy to talk with and chat. Great people! I will say great place my kids loved it… and I will go back again.
GuideThis was our first time camping at Copper Falls, we had previously visited for a day trip, completely taken, we knew we needed to return. The Southern campground doesn’t have any electric and mostly for tent campers, there were still some trailers there. We were in the first loop with woods and some hills behind us, wonderful except for the night there was an intense storm. There was really no place to put our tent that wouldn’t have had some water run off. That’s really the only negative thing. The sites themselves are gorgeously wooded and nice sized. Copper Falls is stunningly beautiful and much of the infrastructure was designed by the CCC. The ranger presence is strong which meant quiet hours were enforced. The facilities were clean and kept that way. They really have something special there and it is clear that they know it with the pride and care used to operate this park. Grab an ice cream sandwich from the concession they are locally made and out of this world!

A group of 4 of us planned a fall colors camping trip, hoping to snag a state forest campsite. Unsurprisingly, on a friday afternoon most of those campgrounds are packed during peak fall color. We called around to a few campground, and luckily the owner at Lax Lake said they had a spare tent pad available, not normally reservable. We didn't care, just needed a spot to set up (in the dark now). Were pleasantly surprised to find a fire ring and table, and were offered access to their bathrooms normally for the reserved RV grounds. Great views of the lake and very close to hwy 61 to access all the parks. Paid $22 or so night. Super grateful of the staff to accommodate on short notice!
