All campsites within the national lakeshore must be reached by boat or sea kayak, except for the Mainland 1, 2, and 3 campsites, which can be accessed by kayak or by hiking in only.** Mainland camping for car & RV camping: There are a variety of state parks and private campgrounds with facilities for car and RV camping in the Bayfield area on the mainland and on Madeline Island. The Madeline Island Ferry is a car & passenger ferry service to transport visitors to the island. Camping within Apostle Islands National Lakeshore: The Apostle Islands offer a unique camping experience. There are many campsites within the park, and each have their own unique characteristics to them. There are 57 individual campsites, 9 group campsites, and 17 primitive camping zones. NOTE: Visitors who choose to visit the islands and sleep in their personal self-contained vessel do not need a camping reservation. Public docks are available first-come, first-serve on 12 of the islands. You'll pay the overnight docking fee upon arrival. Be sure to download the Recreation.gov mobile app on your mobile device before you visit so that you can complete payment for overnight docking using scan & pay upon arrival. Advance reservations for camping permits are requiredfor camping in Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Reservations can be made starting 30 days from the start of a trip. Group campsites: These campsites are designated for groups of 8-21 people. Each site is equipped with a fire ring, bear locker, and a picnic table. These sites are great for large families or get-togethers with friends. These sites are $30 per night. These sites can be reserved in March every year during the Group Camping Lottery and remaining sites will open after the lottery is completed. Primitive zone camping: These campsites are designated for groups of 1-5 people. These sites are for the truly hardcore backpackers. Primitive zone camping is not a specific site but provides the option of choosing a backcountry area to camp. This type of camping experience has NO amenities. There are specific guidelines on where to camp for this type of experience. Consult the Primitive Zone camping maps for potential landing sites and available areas. The following areas are closed to primitive zone camping: Areas excluded from primitive camping zones and closed to camping to protect sensitive natural and cultural resources. Area posted as closed to protect bird nesting areas and threatened or endangered species. Areas in view of any designated trail. Areas within 1/4 mile of any building, historic structure, individual or group campsite, or another camping party. Areas within 100 feet of a flowing stream. Private land or lease holdings. Sailor Springs is a small three-site campground located just two miles outside of the picturesque tourist town of Bayfield, WI. 2023 will be our first year of operation and we’re excited to host campers on the property and provide a unique camping experience.
The campground is spread out over 5 acres of forest on Bresette Hill Road. After parking at the trailhead, you’ll gather your bags and hike into your glamping site. The trail winds through the woods, leading you first to a valley where the seasonal Clark Creek runs through in the spring. The first two campsites are on the other side of this valley. The trail can be steep in spots and requires a moderate level of fitness and mobility to reach the secluded campsites. The third site is a bit farther into the forest, the little A-frame cabin, Anchor sits on the edge of the spring-fed Brickyard Creek that flows year-round.

We stayed at Wildhurst about 20 years ago and had a great time, even got to see an mini-air show overhead with USAF F-16s out of Duluth doing maneuvers overhead. So, when the State Forest campgrounds were closed last spring for storm cleanup, we decided to take a cabin there. Not going back. The new owners are trying; I'll give them that. They're friendly, the little restaurant isn't bad, but the latrines (outhouses) really need to be rebuilt. I mean REALLY. Lime on the toilet seat. Early in the season and the biffys by our cabin were horrible smelling, (And I DO understand that they are open toilets. I was the ranger in a state forest campground for 26 years and had to clean weekly and pump out every year 12 of them.) and if the wind was wrong, we could smell it in our cabin. Cabins were smallish, but comparable to a state park camper cabin, they need updates, paint, roofing, and leveling the floors.
Wildhurst has potential. I wish it was as good as it used to be,

I was in the area for a workshop, but wanted a place "out of town" for a peaceful retreat in the evenings. Tom’s homestead is so welcoming, and I loved my cozy cabin. Its the old creamery on a farm, and is equipped with a futon sleeper, comfy chairs, a sink, picnic table and lawn chairs. Tom also has a Bed and Breakfast on the proerty. Tom is so great to talk to, and his property is an old dairy farm on country land with wildlife ponds and miles of trails you can hike or cross county ski. Great birdwatching everywhere! The whole place is restful and meditative. My little cabin even had an en suite sauna that I hope to try out next time I come! No bathroom in cabin, but you can go inside the host home, and also use the kitchen and family room there. Ashland is about a 15 minut drive, Bayfield about 30 minute drive. Lovely spot to stay, I’ll be back!

This is a private campground that fills up quick. It is 1 mile from Bayfield town center. It is close to the ferry dock, restaurants, parks and beaches. All sites are electric and water and some are full hook up. There are cabins and tent sites as well. The office/store is very clean and stocked with things you may need. 8 flavor ice creams on site! There is a dump station and picnic tables and fire rings at each site. There is free wi-fi and a shower house, bathrooms and laundry.

This small - off the beaten path - campground is wonderful. It has all the amenities you would need of a large campground without all the commotion. It sits on the shore of Long Lake, allowing for fishing, swimming or relaxing with cocktails at sunset. It's just south of Copper Falls SP and just a tad further to Lake Superior, which makes the location great for hitting up all the attractions this area of the Northwoods has to offer. RV water/electric sites, tent and cabin options.
GuideGreat campground! Drove out far for Labor Day weekend hoping we could find a last minute campground. Luckily a few people cancelled their reservations so we found one out here. Had awesome sites, ATV/UTV trails, a bar, a playground, and rentable cabins. Sites are secluded and pretty private. Campground also has clean bathrooms. Toilets are by the sites but are vaults but then by the bar there are two bathrooms with showers and flushing toilets that are open 24/7. Very friendly and accommodating staff. Felt very welcome here even tho I’m from Green Bay haha
TravelerWe liked the easy drive through sites with full hookup. The campsites were tiered into the hill. This helped sound proof the campsites. There was a large group a few sites down from us that we didn't hear until we walked past their site. Some sites also had a view overlooking the pond and Lake Superior. We could see the full moon reflecting off of Lake Superior. Our site did not have this view but we saw it on a walk in the campground. The unique looking cabins were on the pond and looked to be very convenient for families with children who want to be in the water most of the time. We loved all the amenities of Water, Sewer, Electric and WiFi. We loved the close access to Bayfield and the water excursions we took from Bayfield. One of the highlights for our group was the excellent golf course close to the campground. I gave my review a 4 star because the day we were leaving the campsites lost water pressure and had no water to get ready to leave. I believe the owners will be addressing this problem. They were working on it while we were there.

If your from Wisconsin this sits at the very north of the State. If your looking for areas to visit while camping here you may have a little bit of a drive. The park features some of the best waterfalls in the State and the trails surrounding those falls can get you pretty close for some spectacular photos! The North Country Scenic Hiking runs through the park. This is the longest hiking trail in the county and stretches over 4500 miles. The park does have a beach but if you have a four legged friend with you the pet beach isn't the best as your subject to the boat landing area and isn't very inviting. You can walk through this park and never get bored of the scenes. If you like being surrounded by green this is the place! A nice park to get away from any amenities or thoughts of the city!
ScoutThis is the best base camp for exploring the Apostle islands. It’s about a mile from Bayfield. There is bike rental at Howl bike shop which is walking distance. Howl also has a brewery with outside seating. The camp ground itself is quiet and clean. We didn’t go in the bathrooms or use the washers due to Covid. Owners are very accommodating.
GuideI can't say enough awesome things about this park. The hiking trails and scenery are top notch, the variety of camping options are extensive and the quality of the sites are excellent.
If you just want to get away to some beautiful seclusion, this is the place. Even the RV camp site is nicely laid out, not far from the main doughboys hiking trail. In summer, the pads looked good, fairly level and mud free. The sites were heavily wooded and though near the main camp road, it didn't feel like a major throughfare.
I was actually really blown away by he handicap accessible site which was situated right near the top of brownstone falls. You could fall asleep listening to the water crashing down.
The trails were well maintained, especially the waterfall trail (Doughboys). Lots of overlook platforms and a selfy station. If getting away from people is your jam, there are lots of trails away from the hustle and bustle of the main trail. Dirt and turf with some lower muddy spots if you take the trails less travelled.
The swim beach is nice, just a short walk from the parking lot at the ranger station. Plenty of bathroom facilities. The main lot has flush and vault bathrooms, a little nature center (closed for covid), lots of picnic areas and a large spread out feeling.
I never felt crowded at this park which is saying a lot, given how popular it is. The drive there through the Chequamegon forest is even a joy!
GuideWow, Copper Falls has quickly jumped to my number one state park experience in Wisconsin. I’ve lived in Wisconsin my whole life and did not expect such beauty in this northern part of the state.
We decided to camp at a walk in site (#49) and this site will absolutely be our preferred site for future bookings at Copper Falls. The walk in sites are obviously more secluded but the size and views at our site were amazing! Additionally, #49 is the first of the walk-in sites and is closest to the small parking lot and bathrooms at the bottom of the hill. The staff also provided carts for you to haul wood or belongings up to your site.
The hiking trails were breathtaking! The views of the waterfalls were amazing and again, unexpected for Wisconsin. The trails themselves were well maintained with fencing/handrails lining the cliffs and rock paths. Super easy hike but there are lots of stairs!
Needless to say, we will be back!

ScoutIf you are looking for a place to camp where you can reflect and find peace, Copper Falls is right for you. The hiking trails around the falls are breathtaking in all seasons. It offers some challenges for persons with disabilities, but they offer an ADA access to the falls so all can enjoy. Take some time to discover Wisconsin's northern territory around Ashland and Bayfield and you will not be disappointed.
LegendApostle Islands is part of a 21 islands chain at the northern tip of Wisconsin, on Lake Superior. On the mainland, the Lakeshore Trail weaves past cliffs and sea caves. Most of the islands have trails, beaches. Lighthouses can be found on Sand Island and Raspberry Island. The Lucerne shipwreck is just off Long Island.
Amazing place to kayak but you do have to do your research if you aren’t using a kayak guide. A great place to get more information is: National Park Service Website. I recommend using a sea kayak in these waters.
TravelerIf you like waterfalls, then this is the area that you want to visit. You can hike here and see 3 different waterfalls or take a short drive to numerous others in the area. The Sites are large, facilities clean. We love to camp here in the fall when the leaves are changing and hike to see the fantastic views. Day trips to Ashland and the Northern Wisconsin Visitor Center are always on the list of things to do. Take the history walk in Ashland and see all the murals!
RangerI've been on an RV road trip to states I have not yet visited in the past. Wisconsin is one of them. Copper Falls State Park had it all. Multiple beautiful hiking trails, all by different beautiful waterfalls, Copper Falls, Brownstone Falls on the Bad River.
It was a really nice campsite in the forest. There is not much to say about it, just like other campgrounds in the area, in the forest. The trail to the falls is an easy walk from the campground.
Please note that you need to make a reservation when you arrive online or via phone. There is no walk-in. You also have to pay the daily State Park fee which is higher if you have an out of state plate; even for camping. If you spend more than 4 nights in State Parks it's worth buying the yearly pass. If you are only traveling through and lucky enough to find an opening, it can be a bit costly. It cost me over $100 for two nights with electric hookup.
The cell signal was pretty bad down in the campground, it was way better up by the entrance area. There is a lake too with another hiking trail to a different waterfall.

The camping areas seemed clean and we'll taken care of, we were in a site without trash cans, so we made sure to "pack in, pack out" but this place had soany beautiful rock structures Ali g the lake, and it is fun to bring the canoe or kayak during the summer months, but also adventure around during the winter months as well to see the ice buildup on the cliffs and rocks! I just can't get over how beautiful this place is
GuideCamped on Sand Island. Kayaked to the island and the next day got to explore the sea caves on the island. There was a nice walking path to the lighthouse, which we were lucky enough to tour!
LegendBring bug spray (or better yet, the Canadian-made Original Bug Shirt Elite Edition) if you plan to camp in the spring/summer months! These beautiful little islands are well-guarded by these blood sucking creatures, especially if the island in which you are camping has any inland ponds or lakes where they will breed/hatch (such as Sand Island). While mosquitoes are typically crepuscular creatures, these don’t wear a watch…they are out all day every day. We stayed on Sand Island, York Island, and visited the beautiful historic lighthouse on Raspberry Island during a 4-day kayaking adventure.
The backcountry camping areas are nice, but not much to speak of other than a place to pitch your tent -- though the islands, views of Lake Superior, paddling/sailing/fishing options, and sunrises and sunsets are truly to die for! Each camping area has a fire ring, bear boxes, a pit toilet, and some of the larger islands have picnic tables. Some islands have small docks, while others are anchor only if you are in a larger boat. All of the beaches can accommodate multiple kayaks if you are with a larger group. Coin operated showers are available at the campground by the Little Sand Bay visitor’s center.
Even though you are only a few miles from the mainland, the small number of people/tourists make this place feel very remote and secluded. Safety Note: Bring a chart of the islands for navigation purposes, make sure your paddling skills match the weather conditions as the lake can go from sheer glass to 6 foot waves in an afternoon, and bring a marine radio.
There are camping areas on 19 of the 21 islands in the park. $15 per night plus a $10 registration fee. You can register for backcountry sites online.

GuideWe kayaked to many campgrounds and islands in the national lakeshore. paddling a total of 60 miles we were able to make it to 3 different island campgrounds. Bathrooms and picnic tables were at most camp sites, some camp sites were very desolate and rustic. No running water on some islands.
GuideMy husband and I stayed at the only shoreline campsite one October. There is a nice privy, bear box, fire pit and picnic table. The hike was a bit more challenging with a lot of up-and-down hills. There were a few times we had to hop a steam on the downswing of a hill while hiking to the campsite. The beginning of the hike is beautiful with views that are worth seeing and the more challenging hike comes after the beautiful views. It would be a great day hike if you were not feeling like camping or hiking the hills.
LegendThis is a private campground located a few miles south of Bayfield. It is oriented towards RV camping but also has tent sites. It is very family friendly with play areas, small store with necessities and snacks. It would be particularly good for families or groups of events who are attending summer events (lectures, concerts, workshops) at the nearby Chatauqua Event grounds; in fact, the campground has a designated Chatauqua shuttle stop stop so you dont have to deal with traffic and parking. It is convenient to the town of Bayfield too, so you could easily do a variety if day trips in the area. The RV campsite loop is a bit open with only small trees and not much privacy between, but many RV campers like that for socializing and interacting with neighbors. There is a quieter shady loop towards the back of the campground that tent campers and others who want more peace and quiet might prefer. Note: you should call ahead to make reservations as spots fill quickly especially in Chatauqua season. More importantly, note that the entrance and office close by 6pm and NO ONE who is not already registered is allowed in, no late arrivals!
