Long Lake Campground — Kettle Moraine State Forest - Northern Unit

Hikers and paddlers find diverse recreation opportunities at Long Lake Campground, where wooded sites provide natural screening between neighbors. The campground sits within Kettle Moraine State Forest's Northern Unit, offering direct access to both lake activities and an extensive trail network that connects to nearby Mauthe Lake.

Most sites feature trees and brush that create privacy, though the 900s loop offers less seclusion according to campers. Brandon L. notes the campground has a "decent biking trail system to beach and bike trail that connects to Maithe Lake." The 700s loop receives praise for its wooded sites and spacing, while some sites in the lower 900s can be combined for group camping when official group sites are unavailable.

Long Lake provides a sandy swimming beach, though the shallow water works best during early summer or warm fall days. A fishing pier extends into the lake, and kayaking is popular among visitors. Dogs can access the water at a designated picnic area, but pets are not allowed on the main beach. The campground includes flush toilets, showers with good water pressure, and electric hookups for RVs up to 50 feet.

Firewood is available for $5 per stack, with plenty of downed wood scattered throughout the campground for gathering. The facility stays relatively clean, and reservations are recommended during summer months. A unique perk involves a local baker who delivers fresh cinnamon rolls directly to campsites by order.

For those wanting additional options, Bensons Century Camping Resort operates just over a mile north with different amenities and a more resort-style atmosphere.

Guests frequently mentioned the spacious, wooded sites and quiet setting with excellent trail access and swimming beach. Facilities are functional but dated, and pet owners should note significant restrictions on trails and beach areas.

Beach test positive for ecoli 2x this year.

If you stay here do not swim.  They have 2 beaches, they test one for ecoli and close it but leave the other one open because they don't have to test both. It's 50 feet away.  If you don't test, it can't be bad.  How stupid.  They rake goose dumplings into the sand.  Who is managing this place? Camping is fine.  Stay off the beach it's not safe.

Quick escape from the city

This is a nice campground.  A little better than the average Wisconsin state campground.

Pros:

- Clean

- Flush toilets (did not use showers)

- Very nice, sandy and swimmable beach (not true for some campgrounds that I've visited!)

Perk:

- If you call and place and order, a local baker will deliver fresh, homemade cinnamon rolls to your campsite.  You can pay via mobile payment services.  Just look for the signs on the road as you drive in.  The only problem is now camping without waking up to fresh cinnamon rolls will be such a let down! :)

Cons:

- The campsites in the 900s didn't have a lot privacy.

- Walking from the 900s to the beach was a bit of a trek.

Visited for the day but plan to return to camp

We were staying at Mauthe but it was packed so we came here instead and we're glad we did. The trails, fishing pier and beach are nice. We got caught in a thunderstorm that we waited out in a little tavern in nearby Dundee, which is pretty much the cutest little town around. We plan to return next year to camp.

Nice private sites

Very nice campground. Sites are decent sized for tenting or small camper. Almost all the sites are surround by trees and small brush so it gives a private feel. Took a ride over to the town of Dundee and checked out Hamburger Haus for some HUGE ice cream cones. Decent biking trail system to beach and bike trail that connects to Maithe Lake. Would give five stars if the showers and bathroom were a little nicer as they are pretty dated looking.

this is a BIG campground

We had been to this area three years earlier, and stayed at Mauthe lake. That suited us better because it is motorboat free, and we have a canoe. Long lake is more suited for powerboats. the sites are also large and would handle big rigs. There are six different campground loops, none near the lake (though the 700 loop has a trail to the boat launch). We stayed in the lower 900 loop, the smallest. Our site, 906, was about 30 feet from site 730. all the sites in this loop are large and deep with the exceptions of 908,910, 912 which are right up against the road and have no privacy. sites 713 & 705 run into each other and are the best for a large group and a pull-through if you get them together.
Pit toilets only. Fire rings are decent. Wood is available 24/7 through a huge "vending machine" that costs $6 (a five and a one, no change) Wood from the shed costs a dollar less, but only when the ranger is at the front gate.
There's a beach with a concession stand and a separate boat ramp with parking.
We went canoeing at the very small nearby Silver lake and had it all to ourselves.
Sad news is that the Parkside general store, with it's ice cream and home-made maple candies is out of business. Zahn's trading post is temporarily closed, and the Woodland Creek Supper club (both in New Prospect) was undergoing renovation when we were there, a shame as we loved it last time.

We stayed 700, enough space, good hiking trail, nice beach. But the pet picnic area was pretty disappointing. Just a small opening for a dog jumping in the water. All the nice beach area was not open for a dog. My pup was pretty sad.

Ranger Review: Red Ledge Free Rein Raincoat at Long Lake, WI

Campground Review

I've been going to Long Lake for as long as I can remember. Unfortunately we haven't camped here in a couple years, but it was really nice to be back.

We visited in September this year, so the campground was much more empty that it is in the summer. It was also cool, so we didn't make it to the beach this year.

One big change was that a lot of the larger trees were knocked down in a storm earlier this year, so many of the campsites have less shade than in the past. The one we were on this time we've camped on before, but the spot we usually pitch our tent was where they put the downed trees, so the site was smaller and sunnier.

I still really love this campground. It has a good amount of non-electric sites, which we prefer. The access to many hiking options in the Kettle Moraine state forest is great, and when it is hot out the lake is nice for swimming.

Product Review

As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I get products to test from time to time, this time I got to test the Red Ledge Free Rein rain jacket.

I've gone through many cheap ponchos, but haven't had a real raincoat since I was a kid. The one I had as a kid was rubbery, stiff, and not breathable. The Red Ledge jacket is nothing like this. It is light, comfortable, and breathes well. It even has zippered arm pits, in case you need to air them out 😊

I've only used it a couple times in the rain, but I can say it worked. If you are spending serious time in the rain I'd suggest rain pants, since this goes only a little past your waist, and your pants are likely to get wet. Red Ledge does have a "Free Rein" pant as well, but I haven't tried them.

I'm not sure whether I would pay for a coat like this, but I don't think it is overpriced. It is a well-made coat with high quality materials. Overall, I have nothing bad to say about this rain coat. It is well made, works well, and looks good too.

Beautiful campground

I have always loved this campground since I was a teen. We went this past labor day weekend and loved the nice big sites, the paved roads for bikes and rollerblading and the beaches were really clean. We loved just walking around the paths to and from the lake to our site. People were very respectful the firewood was kept in a dry spot (always a pet peeve of mine, some campgrounds dont have the best storage system). Overall great place and we will be back very soon.

My dad took me here when I was in junior high. And now I’ve been taking my daughter here for years. Two beaches and a fishing pier make our top list of daytime activities. The Ice Age trail comes through the forest and makes for some nice hiking. Flush toilets and showers are also a great perk!

Site 907

Our site was a bit less secluded than I’d prefer but still very nice. The loop we were on the lower 900 loop, had quite a few sites that could be combined to be group sites. Two sites completely adjoining or with very little separating them. This loop would be good for an option if the group sites are unavailable. Especially the inner loop sites that back up to each other. We walked some of the other loops and the did not all seem this way, stuff especially in the 700’s loop being a bit more wooded with some nice sites being my favorites, and also some nice sites in the upper 900’s loop that were spaced out nicely. Great hiking nearby, flush toilets, showers, nice little beach, plenty of downed wood around and also available to purchase 5$ a stack, pet friendly except no dogs allowed on the beach. There is a dog friendly picnic area near the water though. Nice get away pretty close to Milwaukee, Chicago, etc...

Lower 900’s

Kettle moraine is great, especially for hiking. We stayed at campsite 907. The lower 900 loop in general had quite a few sites that could be used as group sites. Two sites that were completely adjoining or had very little separating them. Our site specifically was pretty small and did not have very much coverage from the drive. I personally like a more secluded feeling site. We did walk around a few of the other loops and it seemed the others were not set up this way, the upper 900’s and 800’s both had a bit more seclusion. In short a great stay, great restroom facilities, showers, etc... a nice little beach on a huge lake, family friendly, with tons of the Hiking trails near by. My suggestions would be if you are with a larger group or like to be social try something on the lower 900’s loop and if you like a little more seclusion perhaps the upper 900’s or 800’s.

Long Lake Fun

We've camped at Long Lake twice - both times with kids, and thoroughly enjoyed. The sites are spacious and clean. Each site comes with a fire pit, grate and picnic table. We have camped in the 800s but hope to get back for more variety in the future.

Long Lake has two separate beaches and we much prefer the South Shore beach. North Shore is a little less populated, but the hike/stairs down into the beach area can be annoying with kids, toys, camp chairs, and a cooler full of food and beer. South Shore has a boat launch, clean restrooms and a picnic cabana that can be reserved. Both beaches are large and ample. We spread out with a pop-up canopy and did not feel crowded in or like we were imposing on others.

Long Lake is big, so motorcraft are allowed. It's fun to sunbathe and watch waterskiiers and tubers fly by off in the distance.

Long Lake

This campground has nice large sites, some in the sun, some in the shade and some have a mixture. Swim areas are large. We like to fish and this lake is great. We caught some large blue gill, a few crappie, perch and bass. It is a “weedy” lake but when your fishing for certain fish, that’s a good thing. On weekends this lake can get very busy with recreational boats and such.

Huge campgrounds with access to the lake

At the last minute we decided to go camping for the holiday weekend. We called 6 campgrounds close to us on Thursday at noon and this was the only one with availability. Best part about the campgrounds is that the showers have great pressure despite the buildings being old, the camping spaces are typically spacious, and there is lots of felled wood that you can use in your fire pits. The negatives as a dog owner is that dogs are not allowed on most trails or on to the beach.

Large park, with nice lake, hiking, short notice reservations

The park is pretty big, and not super popular compared to other state parks like Devil's Lake, or even the nearby Mauthe Lake. This means reservations can be much shorter notice. The lake is good for swimming, but has a bit of "seaweed". The sites are nice size, and there are many with shade, a few with mostly sun, and a lot with a mix. There are a ton of hiking trails nearby (Kettle Moraine North) or even a couple in the park, as well as a nice biking trail.

How does Long Lake Campground compare to other Kettle Moraine camping options?

Long Lake Campground is generally considered slightly better than the average Wisconsin state campground, offering more amenities and recreational options than some alternatives in the area. Long Lake stands out for its quality beach area and swimming opportunities, which aren't consistently available at all Kettle Moraine campgrounds. What recreational activities are available at Long Lake Recreation Area?

Long Lake Recreation Area offers numerous recreational opportunities for visitors. The lake features a clean, sandy beach perfect for swimming, especially in early summer or warm fall days. Fishing is available from piers on the lake. An extensive trail system surrounds the area, including a 7-mile-long biking trail (one way) and multiple hiking paths through the kettle moraine terrain. The area also connects to the broader trail network of the state forest. For those willing to venture slightly off-site, the nearby town of Dundee offers additional attractions, including the Hamburger Haus known for huge ice cream cones.

What amenities and facilities are available at Long Lake Campground?

Long Lake Campground offers clean facilities with flush toilets and shower buildings that provide excellent water pressure. The campground has several loops with numbered sites (including 700s and 900s loops), with many sites nestled among trees and brush for privacy. Most sites can accommodate tents or small campers. Facilities include a sandy beach area for swimming, fishing piers, picnic areas, and a designated pet area (though it's limited in size). The campground is well-maintained with a mix of more open and wooded sites, some of which can be combined for group camping.
