I've visited this campground twice and it's been a hit both times.
Pros:
- Scenic overlook is gorgeous.
- The dense tree cover and near-constant slight breeze help to both keep this campground cool and the mosquitos at bay.
- Well-kept vault toilets.
- Close to a many points of interest.
Cons:
- Some of the sites are strangely graded and situated. One site near ours had the fire pit at the very edge, making sitting around it virtually impossible. 14 was a pretty site but had a large tree in the middle of it.
- Using the County website to reserve the site was clunky and time consuming.
I have stayed at this campground three times in the last decade or so.
Pros:
- Excellent location if you're looking to recreate on the Wisconsin River or visit the American Players Theater across the way.
- Interesting history about the Shot Tower on site.
- Nice little hiking trails.
Cons:
- Every time I've visited we've dealt with lots of mosquitos, but nothing comes close to our most recent visit! It was a mosquito massacre. So terrible that after coating ourselves in DEET and eating dinner there the first night, we actually booked another campsite about a half hour away (Brigham County Park - a gem!) and abandoned this site altogether.
- Vault toilets were fragrant.
This campground is situated across from Lake Michigan, with access to trails, sand-ridged beaches and a lighthouse (the lighthouse cannot be toured, but can be admired from the outside). There is nice lodge and camp store right on the lake, complete with a quaint restaurant where we got breakfast on the weekend as well as ice cream.
We stayed on site 13. Not super secluded from neighboring sites, but it had nice tree cover. A three minute walk to the beach. The shower house and flush toilets were a bit of a hike from our campsite, but pit toilets were nearby.
We camped in late-May and there were no mosquitos and we didn't see any ticks (not to say there weren't any). The area has some interesting natural features, including some wetland-prone areas with frogs, salamanders, etc.
All-in-all everyone in our party agreed that we would stay here again. Happy camping!
This park has a lot to offer.
Pros:
- Most of the sites were relatively large. We had 3 tents and 2 cars on our site and it wasn't a problem.
- The lake/beach access is a nice bonus.
- Newer shower house and bathrooms, as well as vault toilets
- Decent trails.
- No apparent highway noise.
Cons:
- Despite the large campsites, it felt very "car campery" to me. The sites I observed didn't have much in the way of tree canopy, so it feels very open.
- Lots of campground noise and not secluded.
So, despite Buckhorn being well-appointed, it just wasn't really the campground for me. I prefer a more rustic and woodsy atmosphere and this was not it. I think it is likely better suited for campers/trailers than tents.
Whenever I mentioned to people I was camping at Roche-a-Cri State Park, I'd get, "Huh, never heard of it" as a response. Most of the campsites were filled, but it still felt like finding a hidden gem.
Pros:
- Most of the sites were relatively large. We had 3 tents and 2 cars on our site and it wasn't a problem.
- The rock formations and carvings alone are well worth the trip! Super interesting.
- The pit toilets were clean and well maintained.
- Could hear some highway noise, but not terrible.
All in all, we really enjoyed the campground. Nothing too fancy, but it is worth the trip! Happy camping!
