Within Governor Knowles State Forest, this remote camping area requires hikers to carry their gear into forested terrain. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources manages these hike-in sites, which accept reservations despite their backcountry character.
The forest setting provides tree cover for campers willing to trek their equipment from parking areas. Several established campgrounds operate nearby, including St. Croix Family Campground and sites along the Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway. Grantsburg sits about four miles east for campgrounds near Grantsburg that offer drive-up access. Pack light and reserve ahead during peak seasons.
Description
Governor Knowles State Forest offers nine primitive campsites along the hiking trails. Reservations are required and a free special camp registration permit can be obtained by emailing the forest headquarters at least 7 days prior to occupying the site.
