Rustic cabin rentals in West Virginia's state forests and recreation areas provide varying levels of amenities. Tygart Lake State Park Campground features cabins with traditional furnishings, while Coopers Rock State Forest offers more primitive options. Stonewall Resort State Park Campground includes cabin accommodations with both rustic and modern options available depending on location preference. At Camp Ara, cabin options accommodate smaller groups with basic amenities. "The rustic cabin has a double bunk, stove and fireplace but no running water or shower or sink. There is a shower house a short walk away," notes one camper describing the facilities at Chestnut Ridge Regional Park.

Depending on the campground, cabins range from primitive structures with minimal amenities to fully furnished accommodations with modern conveniences. Family Fishing N' Camping and Holly River State Park both offer cabin options with electricity and heating systems. Pet policies vary significantly - Tygart Lake and Stonewall Resort don't permit pets in cabins, while Coopers Rock and Camp Ara welcome them. Most state park cabins require advance reservations, particularly during summer months and fall foliage season. According to a visitor at Kumbrabow State Forest, "The cabins don't have water or electricity, but offer gas lights, gas refrigerator, fully-equipped kitchen, wood fireplace, and outside grill and firepit."

Most basic cabin rentals provide beds and minimal furniture but require guests to bring their own linens, pillows, and towels. Kitchen facilities vary widely, from full kitchens with refrigerators at Canaan Valley Resort to simple fire rings with cooking grates at more primitive locations. Camp stores at larger parks like Flatwoods KOA and North Bend State Park stock essential items, firewood, and ice. Grocery options are limited near more remote cabins, so advance planning is essential. Several cabins operate year-round, including options at Canaan Valley Resort State Park, while others close during winter months. Bathroom facilities range from in-cabin full bathrooms to centralized shower houses requiring a short walk from the cabin site.

      Holly River State Park Campground

It's a beautiful, clean place with incredible staff

This review is for the primitive boondockers like myself. It's a very established campground, full amenities, restaurant, gift shop, the works. I thought we would find a primitive campground with much more privacy based on the details and reviews of the grounds. The primitive camping spots are all in view of each other down a long stretch of dirt road. They're very clean and come with trash cans at each sight, which was nice. We were the only tent campers so it was enjoyable, but I don't know if I would have had the same experience if there were a lot of campers. I think that's a very important and left out detail about this location for the people who enjoy a more private environment. I'm still very happy with my stay, and the staff is absolutely WONDERFUL. They're all so kind and went out of their way to provide us with information when we had questions they didn't know the answer to, everyone who works there is a delight. 25$ a night felt a little much to sleep in our tent, but the showers, clean bathrooms, and care put into the property made it worth it. Waterfalls nearby as well. I'd stay again.

Coopers Rock State Forest- McCollum Campground

      Beautiful location

The spots are spread out and the trees are beautiful. The people are so nice. The drive in is tight narrow lanes. We stayed one night at #49, pull through with water and electric, no sewer. We booked #43 but Becky moved us to 49 cuz it’s more level.

River Run Campground — North Bend State Park

Muddy, bath house a little dirty during a busy week

It rained a lot (not the park's fault) so it was pretty muddy the whole time I was there. I switched from site 7 (next to the bathhouse) to site 8 midway through, and both were fine and relatively quiet. It was busy and the bathhouse was kind of gross, but I guess that comes with the territory.

      Brooklyn Heights Riverfront Campground

      Peaceful and spacious

Stayed with friends at RV6. Non electric spot but huge with a nice fireplace and benches. No picnic table but great views of the river and the peaceful sounds of flowing water. Only toilet facility is an outside port-o-potty but they have spray, tp, hand sanitizer and seems well kept.

      Holly River State Park Campground

Don’t take the short trip in

Don’t follow the shortest trip using GPS it’ll take you on an old goat path to get here. But back to the campground it’s a really good location. Very very rural out in the middle of nowhere campsites are spaced. Adequately with plenty of shade several small playgrounds in each loop for the kids very quiet family oriented place. This place is so far out in the middle of nowhere they have to pipe the sunshine in.

5 stars! Large lots, beautiful scenery, and nice campers

Coopers Rock State Park is an absolute gem and easily deserves 5 stars. The RV lots are large and easy to navigate, making setup stress-free and comfortable. The staff was very friendly and helpful, which made the whole stay even better. The new washrooms were clean, modern, and well maintained, and the scenery is breathtaking everywhere you look. It’s the perfect place to relax, enjoy nature, and take in the beautiful views.

Coopers Rock State Forest- McCollum Campground

      Beautiful and lush campground

This place is gorgeous and very quiet. The shower house and bathrooms were well maintained, and even had a laundry room and large sink around the back for dishes. Laundry costs $2 in quarters per load, 4 quarters for the washer and 4 quarters for the dryer. They are quick as well, took maybe an hour and 15 minutes all together. Campsites are spaced apart so you're not directly on top of eachother, but you can still see most of the other campers. Lots of trails in the area. We had electrical hook up and a lantern pole, and the is a dump and water station on the way in/out. Highly recommend this site.

Only wish that there were more trails available because it's so beautiful in that area!!!" reports one camper. Another notes that "The lake was pretty but there was a ton trash all around it, such a shame."

Rail trail exploration: At North Bend State Park, campers can access the North Bend Rail Trail. One visitor explains, "This humble campground is located on the 'Haunted' North Bend Rail to Trail. It was easy check in with a friendly staff. Great place to stay with plenty of room to enjoy yourself."

    What campers like

Private tent platforms: Tent camping options in cabin-focused areas provide a alternative lodging near Mount Clare. One camper at Holly River State Park mentions, "The sites are a little tight if you have a bigger camper. We have a R-Pod so the site was perfect for us. We stayed in a site that backed up to the mountain which added some privacy when other campers came in towards the end of our stay."

Diverse cabin layouts: Stonewall Resort State Park Campground features various cabin options. A visitor notes, "Stonewall Resort State Park is now the official name of this mountain retreat located around the edges of Stonewall Jackson Lake. It's not your typical WV state park because it's managed by a private developer which means that Benchmark Management gets to set the pricing for the lodge, cabins and campgrounds."

Wildlife viewing: Many cabin areas offer excellent wildlife watching opportunities. At Canaan Valley Resort State Park Campground, a visitor describes, "Deer meander through the primitive tent sites with their fawns each morning and evening." Another camper shares, "There is a ton of wildlife in this state park! Deer galore! Someone saw a black bear on the trail (we did not)! Beautiful birds with tons of color!"

    What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Weather patterns affect cabins near Mount Clare differently throughout the year. "We spent three days in June and experienced afternoon rain showers daily, but arranged our hikes and bikes around them," notes a Canaan Valley visitor. Another camper at Holly River cautions, "Every morning and every night it rained which made it difficult to swim and fish. The park workers said this is common year round."

Limited connectivity: Many cabin areas have spotty cell service. At Stuart Recreation Area, one camper reports, "As far as cell signals, we have either AT&T and Sprint/TMobile onboard. There is no Sprint connectivity but AT&T was a full 5G signal. AT&T Speedtest 42.3 Mbps down, 20.5 Mbps up."

Bathroom facilities vary widely: Shower and bathroom facilities differ significantly between cabin areas. A visitor to Coopers Rock State Forest mentioned, "The bathrooms do not have lighting so bring a headlamp or flashlight." At Stuart Recreation Area, a camper warned, "They still have plumbing issues and the showers are still non-functional, but we brought our own anyway."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground options: Several cabin areas near Mount Clare include playground facilities. At River Run Campground, one visitor noted, "Great place to stay! We were at site 13, right on the water. Check-in was easy and the staff was very friendly! Plenty of ice and firewood at the store and a cute little gift shop. The site was mostly flat where we parked the camper and very close to the bathhouse. Plenty to do around the park - biking the rail trails, hiking, fishing, basketball, and a nice playground, to name a few!"

Swimming alternatives: Flatwoods KOA offers pool access for families staying in cabins. "Love this KOA! Great grounds, lots of shade down in a valley. Great cell phone service for Verizon. Wide RV spots. Full hookup with e/w/s. Nice pool area. Pool area is at the hotel. Hotel/KOA same owner. FREE ICE at the arena area," reports one visitor.

Wildlife education opportunities: Many cabin areas offer wildlife viewing to engage children. At Holly River State Park, a visitor described, "This is a really beautiful park! When we arrived the park was almost empty and it was so quiet. We enjoyed the beautiful drive in with the fall colors and the little stream next to the road that goes through the campground."

    Tips from RVers

Site levelness varies: RV site conditions can be challenging at some cabin areas. A camper at Stuart Recreation Area warned, "Nice private camping areas more well suited to tents than RV. Most of the sites are very out of level."

Power reliability considerations: Electrical systems at some cabin areas may have issues. A camper at Stonewall Resort noted, "My surgeguard shut off the power in the evening due to high voltage. It was showing 137 volts at one time. I was not impressed and most likely won't be back."

Site selection strategy: When booking cabins or RV sites near Mount Clare, careful site selection improves experience. A Family Fishing N' Camping visitor recommended, "Very nice Campground we tent camp and enjoyed our stay," while another camper warned, "This establishment does NOT offer tent sites anymore! 5/18/2024. I called to make a reservation and they said they do not do that anymore as of a few years ago."
