Cabin camping near Parsons ranges from primitive forest service structures to fully furnished resort accommodations, giving visitors to the Monongahela National Forest region a wide choice of lodging. Stuart Recreation Area provides cabin rentals within its campground, while Revelle's River Resort features log cabins with more amenities. Most cabins include basic furnishings and fire rings for outdoor cooking. "The cabins don't have water or electricity, but offer gas lights, gas refrigerator, fully-equipped kitchen, wood fireplace, and outside grill and firepit," noted one visitor describing the CCC-built cabins at nearby Kumbrabow State Forest. Brooklyn Heights Riverfront Campground and Smoke Hole Caverns also maintain cabin options with varying levels of amenities.

Depending on the location, cabin styles range from primitive forest service structures to fully furnished resort accommodations. Smoke Hole Caverns and Log Cabin RV Resort prohibits pets in their cabins, while other locations permit leashed dogs. Reservations are essential during summer months and fall foliage season when demand peaks. A review mentioned, "The one-room cabin was impressively clean, and the beds were very cozy. There are blackout curtains on the windows, so we slept late and it was glorious." Winter accessibility varies by location, with Canaan Valley Resort State Park maintaining year-round operations while others close seasonally.

Most cabins require visitors to bring their own linens, pillows, and toiletries. Kitchen facilities vary significantly between properties - some offer only outdoor fire rings with grates, while others provide gas refrigerators and cooking equipment. Firewood is sold at most locations, typically for $4-5 per bundle. The nearest full-service grocery stores are in Parsons and Davis, though many campgrounds maintain small camp stores with essential items. Visitors staying in more remote cabin campgrounds near Parsons should arrive with all necessary supplies, as cell service is limited throughout the region, particularly at Smoke Hole Caverns where reviews note "no cell phone coverage" is available.

      Swallow Falls State Park Campground

Beautiful area with a waterfall hike

Lovely little campground in a beautiful forest, with a great waterfall hike walkable to the campground. I stayed in Garrett in October and it was still packed full of people, which for me was nice because I like feeling like I'm in a community of campers. But the sites were super close together, basically right now the main drag, not very private, especially without leaf cover, and a little smaller than I expected. But well kept, in more forest than I was expecting, and I enjoyed myself. The canyon trail was mobbed, but it was a stunning weekend so that's not surprising. Bathrooms in the offseason could have used a bit more attention, but they weren't too bad.

      Holly River State Park Campground

It's a beautiful, clean place with incredible staff

This review is for the primitive boondockers like myself. It's a very established campground, full amenities, restaurant, gift shop, the works. I thought we would find a primitive campground with much more privacy based on the details and reviews of the grounds. The primitive camping spots are all in view of each other down a long stretch of dirt road. They're very clean and come with trash cans at each sight, which was nice. We were the only tent campers so it was enjoyable, but I don't know if I would have had the same experience if there were a lot of campers. I think that's a very important and left out detail about this location for the people who enjoy a more private environment. I'm still very happy with my stay, and the staff is absolutely WONDERFUL. They're all so kind and went out of their way to provide us with information when we had questions they didn't know the answer to, everyone who works there is a delight. 25$ a night felt a little much to sleep in our tent, but the showers, clean bathrooms, and care put into the property made it worth it. Waterfalls nearby as well. I'd stay again.

Coopers Rock State Forest- McCollum Campground

      Beautiful location

The spots are spread out and the trees are beautiful. The people are so nice. The drive in is tight narrow lanes. We stayed one night at #49, pull through with water and electric, no sewer. We booked #43 but Becky moved us to 49 cuz it’s more level.

Yough Lake Campground at Tub Run

      Fantastic for Family

We love it here so much we almost never leave. There is a creek, playground and games for the kids year round. The lake is great for fishing, boating, swimming and more from March-August usually but even longer this year it seems. They are INCREDIBLY strict about 5mph and I LOVE THAT! My 8 year old can run around and be a kid at camp like I was without me being panicked. They even have events once a month. They are constantly adding and upgrading around the campground. Everything from walk to primitive sites to full hook ups and dry cabins.

Highly recommend for a long or short get away.

      Brooklyn Heights Riverfront Campground

      Peaceful and spacious

Stayed with friends at RV6. Non electric spot but huge with a nice fireplace and benches. No picnic table but great views of the river and the peaceful sounds of flowing water. Only toilet facility is an outside port-o-potty but they have spray, tp, hand sanitizer and seems well kept.

      Holly River State Park Campground

Don’t take the short trip in

Don’t follow the shortest trip using GPS it’ll take you on an old goat path to get here. But back to the campground it’s a really good location. Very very rural out in the middle of nowhere campsites are spaced. Adequately with plenty of shade several small playgrounds in each loop for the kids very quiet family oriented place. This place is so far out in the middle of nowhere they have to pipe the sunshine in.

Yough Lake Campground at Tub Run

      Awful place

I wish I could give this campground zero stars. Like the reviews below us stated, we were also verbally attacked by the little man on the golf cart. This campground should be embarrassed by the way it treats families. We were supposed to stay Thursday through Sunday with our best friends and our six children. Instead, we packed up and left Saturday after returning from our planned trip to Ohiopyle with our kids. What was supposed to be a fun, relaxing family camping weekend turned into an experience that left us shocked, disappointed, and completely disrespected. We are experienced campers and have spent years creating memories with our children at campgrounds. We are respectful guests, we follow rules, and we have never had an experience like this. Unfortunately, this campground chose poor communication, intimidation, and selective enforcement over basic customer service. During our stay, we had a truck briefly drive down to the swimming area to unload and later reload chairs, coolers, and supplies for our six children. There are no signs stating that vehicles are prohibited on the grass. In fact, there were multiple golf carts in the same area throughout the day, including staff members and seasonal campers, which led us to believe this was permitted. We understand vehicles are heavier than golf carts, but there were zero signage stating no cars allowed. To preface, there was zero damage done to the grass area due to our truck, we took photos prior to leaving the campground to protect ourselves since management is so emotionally unstable. Mind you: this is an army corp engineers campground, by Under federal law(36 CFR§ 327.2), motorized vehicles, including golf carts, UTVs, ATVs, and standard cars, must remain strictly on designated paved or gravel roads and parking lots. We found this rule after we got home and did our research. There were about 5 golf carts AND a gator in and out of the beach area through out the day. If someone had simply approached us and kindly explained that vehicles were not allowed there, we would have apologized. Instead, staff chose to sit back after someone complained, watch my children swim for hours, wait for us to clean up and bring the truck down to reload, then turn a simple misunderstanding into a confrontation. A staff member approached the truck in a golf cart, speeding up and hopping out(this is all on video) while my minor daughter was inside, reached into our vehicle and took our tag then proceeded to yell at us to pack our“shit” and prepare to leave. The way this was handled was completely unnecessary and unprofessional. Our children were present, witnessed this, and were left scared and confused over a situation that could have been resolved in less than a minute with a respectful conversation. We were also told there is a strict 5 mph speed limit and that radar is used because of a serious incident involving a child in the past, He was hit and life flighted. Yet seasonal campers continued driving golf carts around at unsafe speeds while drinking. Rules and safety expectations should apply equally to everyone, not only when management decides to enforce them against certain guests and not their buddies who pay for a seasonal spot. We went to the office in good faith to discuss what happened and believed the situation had been resolved. We stayed another night, only to be told the following morning that we were no longer welcome back. To permanently ban a family over a first time issue involving a rule that was never communicated is absolutely unacceptable. A well run campground understands that communication and respect go both ways. Instead, this campground made paying guests feel unwelcome and disposable. Management needs to take a serious look at how they handle conflicts because this was not customer service, it was an unnecessary escalation. We will never return to this campground, and after this experience, we strongly encourage other families to think twice before booking a stay here. Especially with young children.

    Guide to Parsons

Cabin accommodations near Parsons, West Virginia provide access to outdoor recreation throughout the Monongahela National Forest region. Located in the Allegheny Mountains at approximately 1,650 feet elevation, this area experiences significant seasonal temperature variations with summer highs in the 80s and winter lows frequently below freezing. Many cabin rental properties maintain winter closures from November through March, with exceptions including Canaan Valley Resort State Park which offers year-round cabin availability.

    What to do

Fishing access: Revelle's River Resort offers cabin rentals with direct river access for fishing opportunities. "Very well run clean campgrounds. We had a river lot which was beautiful. Restaurant, Shavers Saloon, was walking distance and had full bar with good food," notes one visitor to Revelle's River Resort.

Waterfall hiking: Within 30-45 minutes of Parsons, Swallow Falls State Park provides access to Muddy Creek Falls, the highest waterfall in Maryland at 53 feet. "Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Harvey Firestone, and John Burroughs camped on the site in 1918, and 1921," according to a Swallow Falls State Park reviewer.

Winter activities: For visitors seeking cold-weather recreation, Canaan Valley Resort State Park operates ski facilities and maintains cabin access year-round. "There is a scenic chair lift you can ride to the top of the ski mountain and hike back down to the bottom. There are several activities at the resort, something for everyone," reports a visitor to Canaan Valley.

    What campers like

River proximity: Brooklyn Heights Riverfront Campground provides primitive cabin options along the riverfront. "The river is beautiful, but you do have to go down a bit of an incline to get there. On the beach there are rafts, paddleboats, chairs, and across the river there is a ladder to climb up on the rocks," describes a Brooklyn Heights guest.

Four-season appeal: While summer remains the peak season, fall colors attract significant crowds, and winter brings snow sports enthusiasts. "Canaan Valley has 3 loops of sites with hookups as well as a few primitive tent sites. There's a centrally located bath house with flush toilets and hot showers," notes a visitor to Canaan Valley Resort State Park.

Clean facilities: Despite the rustic settings, many campers appreciate the attention to maintenance. "The one-room cabin was impressively clean, and the beds were very cozy," reported one visitor, while another noted, "The campground was clean and nicely maintained. The bathrooms were quite possibly the cleanest camp bathrooms I've ever come across."

    What you should know

Bear awareness: Bear activity is common throughout the region, requiring proper food storage. "Bears are common so they emplaced a big old bear box at every site. It's enough room to hold your food for a month of camping!" reports a Deep Creek Lake State Park visitor.

Limited cell coverage: Connectivity is inconsistent across the region. "No cell phone coverage" is reported at Smoke Hole Caverns, while other areas have spotty service. "As far as cell signals, we have either AT&T and Sprint/TMobile onboard. There is no Sprint connectivity but AT&T was a full 5G signal," notes a visitor to Stuart Recreation Area.

Seasonal operation: Most cabin facilities close during winter months. "Season is March to December," reports a visitor regarding Smoke Hole Caverns and Log Cabin Resort, which is typical for many properties in the region except for state parks with winter programming.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Multiple cabin rental facilities maintain playground equipment for children. "Older playground, but good enough for kiddos. Mini golf course, rock wall, and civil war reenactments when we came," notes a Canaan Valley visitor.

Wildlife viewing: The region offers excellent wildlife observation opportunities from cabin sites. "Deer meander through the primitive tent sites with their fawns each morning and evening," reports a visitor, while another mentioned, "The campground is absolutely beautiful. We stayed there for three nights in a trailer. All sites have full hook ups and a paved pad. The sites are far apart. Bathrooms were OK. There are deer everywhere!"

Educational opportunities: Coopers Rock State Forest provides interpretive programs during summer months. "Beautiful campground, with full hookups and bath house. There are several beautiful hikes to take in the park. A restaurant with a view and gift shop with local products," describes a visitor.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection: Campers with larger RVs should research site dimensions carefully. "There are a number of campgrounds in the Smoke Hole Canyon/Seneca Rocks area, but most of them are better suited to smaller rigs and tent campers. If you have a class A or are looking for something with full hookups, look no further," advises a visitor to Smoke Hole Caverns and Log Cabin/RV Resort.

Hookup availability: Full-service connections are limited in the region. "All sites have full hook ups and a paved pad. The sites are far apart," reports a Canaan Valley visitor, but this is uncommon as most cabin and camping areas offer only partial hookups or none at all.

Leveling challenges: Prepare for uneven terrain at many cabin and RV sites. "Almost all sites are on a hill. The pictures do not accurately show this," warns a Tygart Lake State Park visitor.
