Grindstone Campground is tucked in the Fairwood Valley among pastures and wooded hillsides. The surrounding Mount Rogers National Recreation Area provides endless opportunities for fun and relaxation in the nature setting. The Campground will be closed until further notice due to facility repair needs. Opossum Loop will be open for tent campers. There will be no available water. No Dump Station available.
The area offers excellent hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and hunting. Recommended hiking trails include the Mount Rogers Trail at 7.5 miles and the Whispering Waters Nature Trail at 0.6 miles. Several streams pass by just beyond the campground, with trout fishing available in abundance. The campground boasts a water play area in the creek, an amphitheater, a playground and volleyball courts to entertain families.
At 3,800 feet, Grindstone is surrounded by mixed hardwoods, hemlock and rhododendrons. The Mount Rogers National Recreation Area spans 200,000 acres of National Forest, with four wildlife-rich wilderness areas.

**Southwest Virginia's Hidden Gem....**Gatewood Park, Campground and Reservoir is located in beautiful Southwest Virginia near Pulaski, Virginia. The park is surrounded by the National Forest. The Campground has 35 full hook up sites with water, sewer and electric on each site, we have both waterfront and non waterfront sites. The campground has a beach area, kids play area, 9 holes of family friendly disc golf, hammock park, hiking and biking trails, 11 miles of shoreline on a private, electric motor only reservoir, great fishing, electric boating and paddling. Camp store, shower/restroom facility, docks for electric motor boats, boat launch, boat, kayak and paddleboard rentals onsite. Very nice spot, right by the river with plenty of spaces to hammock down by there. We were lucky and got one of the last spots, there’s only 11. Fire rings with grill, and bench at each site. The ground is great for tents, no rocks. If you’re planning on coming here, make sure and come early. Pit toilets also available.

GuideStayed here for a few nights with 3 other people. We had 1 big tent, 2 vehicles and a few dogs and had plenty of room. The road getting back to the site is a little sketch but worth the trip in. Just remember you have to make that trip all the way back out if you forget anything at the store (like we did) so be prepared to have plenty of food and wood. Water access is not problem if you have a good filtration system. The view of the river is absolutely beautiful!!

We absolutely loved Camp Burson at Hungry Mother. The camp was clean and friendly. The spaces were somewhat close together, but they were large, so it didn’t bother us. There was a hiking spot just across the road, a camp store with ice and firewood, and a nice bath house with flush toilets and showers. The beach was a short drive away. The staff there was very nice and the beach was well maintained. The real stars were the camp hosts, The Viles. The sweetest couple. So friendly and helpful. They made our stay so much better. Highly recommend this campground. If there was a playground here, it would be 5 stars. There was one by the beach, but not within walking distance.

We had 2 of the larger campsites (#2 and #3) for Memorial Day Weekend. We had a great time all weekend with hiking,picnics,campfires and ghost hunting. However,on Sunday night a strong storm came through that brought down trees with it's fierce wind and torrential rain. The power went out in the campground. The Park superintendent offered a free room in the lodge to anyone who wanted to stay where there was electricity. We were camping in a tent which ended up with lots of water in it. Kudos to Superintendent Ken for making a bad situation better. We will recommend this beautiful park to everyone.

TravelerWe had unseasonably warm temperatures in October. Fall colors were just past peak. Our site was clean, spacious, level. Easily accommodated our 25 foot RV. Trails started close to our site and were just beautiful. Bath house was ok. There is a washer and dryer available. Plenty of grass for the pups to enjoy.
RangerLoved my site- I’m a tent camper and my tent just fit on the site- I had a tent footprint and padding inside my tent so as not to damage the tent floor - the site is a paved site meant for campers but I wanted to be by the creek! The bathrooms were in great condition and the camp hosts were very friendly!

I have been to this facility in the past, like 20 years ago, and revisited this summer (2023) and wow has it exploded! There is a ton of infrastructure and people everywhere. There are multiple lodging options from decked out cabins to rustic tent camping. If you're into amusement park style activities with an outdoor spin, then you won't get bored here but nothing is free and lot's of the activities will require an additional fee, though packages are available. There's several food options on site as well. Not my jam anymore but I'm sure families with young kids will love it.

Set in a lovely woods about 200 yards off the New River, this was a decent campground, reached by a curvy gravel road. Pit toilets were relatively clean. Dumpster in the parking lot was overflowing with trash, including a pile of about a dozen tires. The drive in campsites are level, and some back up to the woods. Ours happened to be full of cigarette butts and melted plastic bottles in the fire pit, which we cleaned up and threw away. It’s free, so hard to complain about the lack of attention, but still …

ScoutArmy camp is nestled by the new river and has plenty of views of the mountains. None of us had cell phone reception, so if you’re looking for a tech free weekend then this is your spot. Saw plenty of small RV’s and campers at the spot. The road is pretty narrow so I wouldn’t suggest large RV’s go to this spot. Camp had a fire ring and hanging pole with enough room for four back packs on top. Parking spaces at the camp were big enough to accommodate 2-4 vehicles. Plenty of critters were roaming around with a bear spotted two nights in a row.

Overnight stop on our trip south. We got in early enough that we were able to get a game of bowling in before they closed. The pizza was good too. We had a nice pull through.
TravelerAs far as the sites goes, ours was okay, but a lot of the sights were not level. All the sites to the left of the pond had the tongue on the ground and the rear jacks had pretty extreme crib blocks just to get the jacks to stabilize. The landscaping was not very well taken care of and the sites really need gravel. It was a muddy mess when it rained. On a positive note each site had a concrete pad.
The pool was extremely cold and had a lot of algae around the rim, but it does have the slide which my daughter enjoyed. The bowling alley had I think 6 lanes and it was pretty good. The putt putt golf is in rough shape so we didn’t even do it.
The staff that I dealt with were definitely odd. They weren't friendly at all, but rather very straight forward and weird. Altogether, I won’t stay here again. I will try on up the road at Fancy Gap or Mayberry on our travels through 77/74.
TravelerI typically steer clear of KOA's because most of the sites are super close together. This KOA is different! There is a row towards the front that are pretty close together, but I think they use those for one-nighters. We were in a tent and loved our spot. The staff was UNBELIEVABLY awesome and nice. They have a pool, a pond, a playground, a dog park, and a great camp store. The bathrooms and laundry room are exceptionally clean. If you order ice or firewood, they bring it to your site. They also have food you can order and they will bring it to your site. I am sure there are many things I am forgetting, but this is a must stay and we will be back.
