Solitude

If solitude is what you are seeking for, then this is the perfect place! Mind you, there is no water, no toilets, absolutely no facilities.

If you are at the campsite, and you have to answer nature's call, then carry Enzyme treated potty bags to do your business. IF you are hiking, you can bury your waste, but make sure to carry out the toilet paper.

Carry loads of water if you are hiking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Maze Overlook Campground located in Canyonlands?

Maze Overlook Campground is located in the remote Maze District of Canyonlands National Park in southeastern Utah. This is the most isolated and least accessible district of the park, situated west of the Colorado and Green Rivers. The campground provides stunning views over the intricate canyon system known as The Maze. Access requires high-clearance 4WD vehicles and significant navigation skills, as it's considered one of the most remote camping locations in the lower 48 states.

What permits are required for camping at Maze Overlook in Canyonlands?

Backcountry camping permits are required for overnight stays at Maze Overlook Campground. These permits must be obtained from the National Park Service in advance, as no on-site registration is available in this remote location. Permits are limited due to the area's wilderness designation and environmental sensitivity. Additionally, visitors must adhere to strict Leave No Trace principles, including packing out all waste using enzyme-treated potty bags or burying human waste properly while hiking. Contact Canyonlands National Park directly for current permit information and availability.

How difficult is the trail to Maze Overlook Campground?

The trail to Maze Overlook Campground is extremely challenging and recommended only for experienced backcountry travelers. Access requires navigating difficult 4WD roads and technical terrain with potential for vehicle damage. Once at the trailhead, hikers face steep descents with significant exposure and route-finding challenges. The area has no water sources, marked trails are minimal, and the remote location means emergency assistance is hours or days away. This destination is considered one of the most logistically difficult camping areas in the National Park system and demands thorough preparation.
