On top of the world!

I camped at Murphy A which I think has the best view of the 4 sites. Tons of space and on a clear night the stars feel like you could reach up and touch them.

It’s a haul to get here but it’s the perfect middle ground on the White Rim. I did about 4-5hrs both each day so I feel like this was the perfect campsite. I also drove out to White Crack and I personally think the view and site is better at Murphy, but that’s just me.

The trail is most difficult right before and right after this campground so be prepared for that but nothing a stock 4x4 couldn’t get through with decent ground clearance.

Can get very windy up here and was at the beginning of the evening but wind completely died by bed time which made it a like warm. But hey that’s tent camping!

Apple Satellite texting worked out here. No cell coverage for almost the entire White Rim though.

Feels like you’re a million miles from anyone lol. Enjoy it!

Best views I’ve ever seen

The road getting to this is a total b*tch. But the views are worth every bit of the hassle. It’s the perfect place to watch the sun set after a long day on the trail.

Frequently Asked Questions

What facilities and amenities are available at Murphy Hogback Campground?

Murphy Hogback Campground offers primitive backcountry camping with minimal facilities. There are four designated sites (A, B, C, and D), with site A noted for having particularly excellent views. The campground does not provide water, electricity, or modern restrooms. Pack in all supplies you'll need and pack out all waste. What the campground lacks in amenities, it makes up for with stunning panoramic views, exceptional stargazing opportunities, and peaceful isolation.

How do I access Murphy Hogback Campground in Canyonlands?

Murphy Hogback Campground is located along the White Rim Trail in Canyonlands National Park. Access requires navigating challenging, rough terrain that demands high-clearance 4WD vehicles. The road getting there is quite difficult but serves as a perfect middle point when traversing the White Rim. Plan for significant driving time as it takes several hours to reach from park entrances. The difficult access is balanced by the spectacular views awaiting those who make the journey.

What are the best times of year to camp at Murphy Hogback?

Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) offer the most pleasant conditions for camping at Murphy Hogback, with moderate temperatures and typically dry conditions. Summer brings extreme heat, making camping challenging without shade. Winter can be beautiful but brings cold nights and potential for snow or ice on the already difficult access roads. Clear nights throughout the year provide exceptional stargazing opportunities. For the optimal experience, aim for shoulder seasons when temperatures are comfortable for both daytime exploration and nighttime sleeping.

Do I need a permit to camp at Murphy Hogback in Canyonlands?

Yes, a backcountry permit is required to camp at Murphy Hogback. As a designated backcountry site in Canyonlands National Park, permits must be obtained in advance from the National Park Service. These permits are limited and can be competitive, especially during peak seasons. Contact the Canyonlands National Park visitor center or check the official NPS website for current permit application procedures and availability. Secure your permit early as the limited number of sites can fill up quickly.
