Paved roads loop through Hunter Park in a full circle, meaning drivers never have to back out, and big rigs have enough room to maneuver comfortably. The campground sits along the water on Lake Granbury, managed by the Brazos River Authority, and access comes by car, boat, or on foot. There are no designated sites. Campers pick their own spot on a first-come, first-served basis across an open field that runs down to the lake's edge.
Water access is the main draw here. A fishing pier extends out over the lake and sees regular use, with anglers reporting active fish. The field is wide and open, which means shade is limited, and campers in tents or without canopies should plan accordingly. A handful of trees do exist on the property, and spots near them tend to fill earlier. Roughly 15 campers were counted on a single recent night, with additional day visitors cycling through to use the pier, so expect some foot traffic.
Amenities are minimal but functional. Picnic tables and grills are on site, trash service runs, and cell coverage is available. The permanent restrooms have been closed during multiple visits, with porta-potties provided in their place. No electricity or water hookups are available, so everything needs to come with you. As Jesse P. puts it, "Free camping near the water. Can't beat that with a stick." A gas station sits about two minutes away, which helps if supplies run short. Anglers, boaters, and campers comfortable with an open layout and no hookups will get the most out of Hunter Park. Those browsing campsites around Granbury will find this one among the few free options in the area.
