Best Dog-Friendly Camping near South Houston, TX

Medical Center RV Resort's dedicated pet area provides relief for traveling dogs, with pets allowed at all 185 RV sites. This established South Houston campground enforces leash requirements while offering full hookups and concrete pads for RVs. South Main RV Park and Lakeview RV Resort maintain similar pet-friendly policies, though staff at some locations can be inconsistent with pet owners. Most South Houston pet-friendly campgrounds provide convenient access to medical facilities, with several offering shuttle service to the Texas Medical Center. Brazos Bend State Park Campground, located about 30 minutes southwest, offers a more natural setting for dog hiking compared to the primarily urban RV parks closer to the city center. The Tom Bass Park adjacent to Houston Med Center KOA Holiday contains excellent dog parks along with playgrounds. Gated entry systems at most locations ensure security for pets and owners, though the surrounding neighborhoods vary in safety. Campers should note that summer heat can be extreme, requiring early morning or evening pet walks and constant access to fresh water for dogs.

Great campground with wonderful staff who are very friendly. Full hookup, paved sites with heated saltwater pool and hot tub, workout facilities, clubhouse with games and puzzles, laundry facilities, a small camp store, and pet friendly with two small dog parks. The best thing about the location is that it backs up to Tom Bass park that has wonderful dog parks along with playgrounds and frisbee golf. Would definitely be staying here again!

    Traders Village RV Park

Houston, Tx…..Nothing to get excited about

It’s a large campground and spaces are very small. There’s a grass strip between camp sites. No picnic tables or grills. The office gave us a map and showed us how to get to our site but virtually impossible to understand. A very nice gentleman that stayed here took us to our site. He said they have no idea how to do directions and a buddy of his really messed up his camper by trolling around looking for their site. It’s very crowded and no room for awnings or for both campers side by side to put out awnings. There is a pool but it doesn’t look well maintained and there’s absolutely no chairs. Just the pool and it’s small. Laundry room is large. There’s no dog park or anywhere to walk your dog. Signs everywhere that say no pets, yet they are allowed. The flea market is only on the wknd. It’s close to a lot of restaurants and in a nice area.

    Beachside RV Park

    Best place in Bolivar Peninsula

This was such a blissful place to start my Texas snowbird trip. As a solo female traveler in a campervan I felt so incredibly safe and welcomed to this campground. Nancy and Butch are the kindest campground hosts I've ever encountered. They ensured to check in with me regularly during my two week stay, the bathroom, shower and laundry facilities were maintained consistently, and the dog park and closeness to the beach was perfect for my dog's daily exercise. For the reasonable price, I felt this campground delivered above and beyond. If I hadn't scheduled another campground, I would have stayed longer. Thank you to all at Beachside RV. You made my stay memorable.

    Bolivar Peninsula RV Park

    Still needs work

Pros: office lady very nice, site 1 has 1 tree for shade, ferry w/ our travel trailer from Galveston Island was easier than expected, large dog park, close to Camp Margaritaville.

Cons: gravel sites, bathroom super gross with no TP, dirt rv road kicks up lots of dust, right on noisy highway.

Houston / Med Center KOA Holiday

    A lot of Amenities

The park is clean, but the sites are tight. The further you get to the front the louder the traffic noise is, but the sites are larger and spaced out more. It is a five and take. It has three locations with washer and dryers, two dog parks, a recreation room and easy access to Tom Bass park.

    Beachside RV Park

    Affordable, Convenient, Amenity Rich

This is the nicest RV Park on the Bolivar Peninsula / Crystal Beach area. Truly. So well maintained, and quiet peaceful setting.

We were surprised that it had a nice dog park, indoor laundry, shower, wifi, gazebo for hanging out in and more, all included in the rate!

    Close to the beach.

Walk to the gas station and restaurants.

They are running a winter special.

Guide to South Houston

South Houston camping areas are predominantly urban RV parks situated at elevations of 35-50 feet above sea level within a subtropical climate zone. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F between June and September with high humidity. The region experiences approximately 49 inches of annual rainfall, making drainage an important consideration when selecting camping locations.

What to do

Observatory access at night: Brazos Bend State Park Campground offers a unique astronomy experience about 30 minutes from South Houston. "The best part of this park is the observatory, which has special events and regular weekend hours pretty much all year. It's absolutely worth staying up late for this!" notes Kim B. The park recommends visitors "help keep light pollution down in that area so everyone can enjoy the stars (no flashlights or phones out)."

Kayaking opportunities: USA RV Resorts Marina Bay provides water access for paddlers. "Pool is located next to Jarbo Bayou for birdwatching, kayaking and fishing," explains Pat M. The bayou connects to Clear Lake and Galveston Bay, offering varied paddling routes for different skill levels.

Walking paths in city parks: Houston Med Center KOA Holiday backs up to extensive walking areas. "The best thing about the location is that it backs up to Tom Bass park that has wonderful dog parks along with playgrounds and frisbee golf," mentions Tawnya. The park has a 2-mile paved walking loop suitable for all ability levels.

What campers like

Security features: Lakeview RV Resort maintains controlled access systems. "Very safe gated community, quiet, staff was friendly and the camp site has many amenities in case you're staying longer like a gym and a pool! Everything is very well taken care of and organized," says Andrea. The resort's security measures include perimeter fencing and lighted pathways.

Convenient medical center shuttles: South Main RV Park offers transportation services for those needing medical care. "This is about 3 miles from MD Anderson Cancer Center, and the RV Park runs a shuttle to and from the Med Cen. The Shuttle is not available for any other transportation," explains David B. Several campgrounds provide similar services specifically for medical appointments.

Evening ambiance: Medical Center RV Resort creates a welcoming atmosphere after dark. "At night the string lights overhead give a warm and comforting feeling to walk around and enjoy the cool evening air," writes Nathan. These lighting features help campers navigate the grounds while maintaining a comfortable environment.

What you should know

Neighborhood considerations: Urban RV parks in South Houston have varying surroundings. "Once your inside the gates, the park was clean and staff was friendly. I had no problems at the park. Close to the Texas Medical Center. The area around the park is a bit rough," notes Greg S. about Lakeview RV Resort. Research the specific neighborhood before booking.

Highway proximity affects noise levels: Eric & Jay's RV Resort sits near major roadways. "You are right next to interstate, but it's convenient to stores and easy to get in & out of gate," explains Jules S. Front sites typically experience more traffic noise than those positioned toward the back of properties.

Site leveling requirements: Some newer parks still have uneven pads. "This is a brand new park, yet some of the concrete slabs are unlevel. Perhaps the most unlevel that we've experienced in our travels," reports kristin S. about Eric & Jay's. Bring leveling blocks even when staying at resorts with concrete pads.

Tips for camping with families

Proximity to playgrounds: Brazos Bend State Park Campground offers recreation areas for children. "There are standard RV/tent sites, screened shelters (for sleeping), and rustic cabins, horse sites, and youth group sites. The sites are pretty spread out and maybe half of them are very shady," notes Kim B. The park maintains dedicated playground equipment near family camping areas.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Alligator sightings provide educational experiences. "If you want to see alligators in their natural habitat this is the park for you. There wer so many. We even came across one on the trail eating a snake," shares Rebecca about Brazos Bend. The park's nature center allows supervised interaction with smaller specimens.

Pool restrictions vary by property: Some resorts designate separate swimming areas for different age groups. "They have an adult pool and a family pool. The adult part of the pool rule wasn't enforced because when I walked over to it there were several families in the pool," reports Jeff H. about USA RV Resorts Marina Bay. Check pool policies before promising swim time to children.

Tips from RVers

Gate access procedures: South Main RV Park and similar facilities use security gates requiring codes. "Has a gate with a code so it did feel safe at night," notes Casey L. First-time visitors should call ahead for check-in procedures to avoid blocking roadways while attempting to enter.

Site width considerations: Eric & Jay's RV Resort has varying site dimensions. "Our back-in spot was also very narrow with hardly any room to walk between the picnic bench and trailer once we were pulled-in," explains kristin S. Request specific site measurements when making reservations for larger units.

Pet relief areas: Pet friendly camping near South Houston, Texas often includes designated dog zones. The "large onsite laundry room that takes card. Also has daily trash valet that is nice," mentions Jules S. about Eric & Jay's, which maintains multiple pet stations throughout the property with waste disposal bags and receptacles.
