    Wilderness Oaks RV Resort

Okay but next to airport with poor park drainage

The previous reviewer is correct about the airport noise.

    Pros:

    • Our RV site was a back-in with plenty of room on a concrete pad with a picnic table. We were in the back row.

    • Our site did not have trees hanging over like a lot of sites (we have solar panels).

    Cons:

    • The campground wifi sucked. We relied more on our own Verizon wifi hotspot (we never assume park wifi is good).

    • Next to airport.

    • RV park, especially on eastern half, has seriously poor drainage. We were trapped in our RV lot, unable to leave, because the water was too deep for our Class A to go through without damage/mess of some sort.

    NAS RV Park Corpus Christi

Nice Mil CG just prepare for stay

This is our 2nd time staying here.
This park is aka Shields. Park has 2 sections. Sect A has grass sites. Sect B has concrete pads and a separate area for tents. Each section has a laundry room and shower building. We stayed in B. Sites are wide and level and have full hookups with 30/50 amp. Good water pressure. Sites are all back ins, Big rig friendly and easy to set up. No matter where you park there is a nice view of the Bay.
I'd give it a 5 star rating but there are a few items that need to be fixed or prepared for. 1st the roads really need to be repaired. Potholes are horrible in some areas. 2nd the picnic tables are so rusted through that many are unusable. 3rd the goat heads or grass burrs are a nightmare especially if you step on one in the middle of the night. Ouch!! LOL If you have dogs (we do) they absolutely can't run in the grass. We bought our pups doggy boots which help some. And this time we brought our leaf blower to blow them off the concrete pad. 4th the winds here can reach 60 mph. Just prepare for it by never leaving awnings out and when bad bring slides in so awning toppers don't get ripped off. (It happened to our neighbors last year) Ants, there are tons of them. I use citronella spray around our leveling gear and tires to deter them from living with us. Lastly if you don't want salt on your rigs don't come here. There are times when its so thick you could use an ice scraper.
Even with those items we really like it here. You can't beat the location to Padre Island and Port Aransas. The sunsets are amazing and walking the private beach daily is never tiring.

    Port A RV Resort

    Learning to be retired

We retired and our first stay has been at Port A RV resort. Very friendly staff and guests. We already feel as though we have been doing this for a long time. Lots of neighbor activities and pet friendly too. 2 pools, a hot tub, several gathering spots, laundry, palm trees... just feels like home.

    Tropic Island Resort

    Great location

The great location. My family and me have stayed here a number of times It's less than a mile to the beach. All the stores and restaurants are all close. Full hook ups along with a sewer. Like any RV park, the spots are close together and tight. They have some pull through, but most are back in.

    Pioneer Beach Resort

Been making an annual trip with a growing friends group for years

A friend and I, along with our families have been making an annual trip to Pioneer for a few years now and only bad part is when it's time to leave. We always book the buddy site that is pull-through and has our campers facing each other with a common space outside our front doors. This also helps with shade when we put out our awnings and have plenty of room for everyone to relax in the shade. The pools, and multiple rec rooms are always clean and in great shape. There is a pen for dogs to play and easy boardwalk access to the beach through the dunes. People are great and a fun family atmosphere

    Convenient Location and Nice Amenities

We’ll maintained park within walking distance to marina and great restaurants. Sites have concrete pads and picnic tables. Plenty long, but very close together. Nice landscaping and great pool and hot tubs. Shower house is super clean and so is laundry. You can rent golf carts here for $100 (24 hours). A short drive to the beach.

Gulf Waters Beach Front RV Resort

    5601 TX-361, Port Aransas, TX 78373

We stayed here 16 days in a 34 ft. Travel Trailer. Our site had an outdoor kitchen, cement picnic table and benches and a lovely palapa. The resort grounds are gorgeous and very well maintained. There is a pool, hot tub, showers and gorgeous private beach. The sites are each individually owned and decorated. We enjoyed the nice walk, up and over the dunes on the boardwalk, right onto the beach.

Staff was super courteous and helpful. Grounds were kept clean.
Great location, located between Corpus Christi& Port Aransas.

I can’t say enough about this amazing experience. We will be back! Excellently maintained RV resort!

Guide to Mathis

Lake Corpus Christi near Mathis, Texas sits at approximately 94 feet above sea level in the coastal plains region. The reservoir covers 21,000 acres when full, creating opportunities for waterfront RV camping near Mathis, Texas throughout most of the year. Water levels can fluctuate seasonally, affecting fishing conditions and shoreline access at lakeside camping areas.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Lake Corpus Christi offers year-round fishing with peak seasons for largemouth bass in spring and fall. At EZ Living RV Park, campers appreciate the lake access. "An affordable quiet campground on the lake in South Texas. Beautfiul oak trees and sites are nicely kept. A perfect place place to fish and very pet friendly," notes reviewer Brandi B.

Lake recreation: The lake provides boating, swimming, and water sports from public access points within a 10-minute drive of most campgrounds. Wilderness Lakes RV Resort is strategically located for exploring multiple water recreation areas. One camper shared, "Driving distance to Corpus, Port Aransas, Padre, Victoria, King ranch, We visited all these places. Right next to Corpus Christi Lake & park."

Day trips: The Mathis area serves as a central hub for coastal excursions with Rockport and Port Aransas both under an hour's drive away. Reviewer Dave B. noted that at Gulf Waters Beach Front RV Resort, "Easy walking distance to the beach just over the dunes with a cart path," making it an ideal base for coastal exploration.

What campers like

Outdoor living spaces: Many RV parks feature concrete patios or outdoor seating areas that provide comfortable gathering spots. Mike D. described Wilderness Lakes RV Resort as having "Fast Food and Restaurants are approx 6mi. Overall we loved this place and the staff! We stayed longterm, 4mo at a time. Prices are good, Daily, weekly, monthly."

Pool facilities: Several parks offer swimming pools as alternatives to lake swimming, particularly valuable during summer heat. A reviewer at Sea Breeze RV Community Resort mentioned, "They have a pool, it's nice and quiet at night time and the fishing is the best!" This provides a valuable amenity during hot Texas summer days.

Pet-friendly policies: Most campgrounds near Mathis welcome pets with minimal restrictions compared to other regions. At EZ Living RV Park, a camper highlighted, "No extra fees for people or pets," making it more affordable for travelers with animal companions.

What you should know

Seasonal population changes: Winter months bring a significant influx of long-term campers. According to Richard G. at Hitching Post RV Park, "We stayed overnight while traveling. It was pretty quiet even though near 1/4 mile, the highway. Good cable tv. There are a lot of trees so satellite reception would likely be difficult."

Infrastructure quality: Road conditions vary significantly between parks, with some maintaining paved roads while others feature gravel or mixed surfaces. A Wilderness Lakes RV Resort camper noted, "It has Gravel roads but they are good roads. Speed bumps (and a very alert security) keep the traffic at a good speed limit."

Internet limitations: While most parks advertise WiFi, performance can be inconsistent during peak usage hours. Richard G. mentioned, "We didn't use the Wi-Fi" at Hitching Post RV Park, suggesting campers might want to bring their own connectivity solutions.

Insect management: The coastal proximity means mosquitoes and fire ants can be problematic, particularly after rainfall. One camper at Sea Breeze RV Community Resort warned, "Due to the location though, bring bug spray! We got eaten up by the mosquitoes even with bug spray - they are huge and there's a ton of them!"

Tips for camping with families

Community activities: Many parks organize seasonal events and gatherings that provide social opportunities. At Wilderness Lakes RV Resort, a reviewer praised "The staff is great for scheduling entertainment, outings, cleaning, & security. Bathrooms, showers, laundry are up to date & clean. Very nice game room, meeting area, and kitchen."

Swimming options: Beyond the lake, look for parks with maintained pools for safer swimming with children. Rod A. described Gulf Waters Beach Front RV Resort as having "ponds and a heated pool. Some spots have cabanas, outdoor patio areas and furniture all set up. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable."

Spacing considerations: Site sizes and privacy vary considerably between parks, affecting family comfort. A reviewer noted at Gulf Waters Beach Front RV Resort, "Each site is individually owned and managed by an HOA. These sites are huge and most have special features, wet bars, cabanas, propane fire pits etc."

Tips from RVers

Power requirements: Verify amperage availability matches your rig's needs before booking. Mathis Motor Inn & RV Park offers both 30-amp and 50-amp options across its 58 sites, though recent reviewers had mixed experiences with management.

Extended stay considerations: For longer stays, inquire about monthly rates and electricity billing practices. Mike D. shared about Wilderness Lakes RV Resort, "We stayed here in a 40' fifth wheel for 2 winters. Loved the area. Prices are good, Daily, weekly, monthly."

Leveling preparation: Bring leveling blocks as site conditions vary considerably between parks.
