Tucked into a canyon valley behind Mount Rushmore, Kemp's Kamp sits roughly 1.5 miles from downtown Keystone and about 5 miles from the monument itself, making it a practical base for visitors working through the Black Hills. A creek and the 1880s scenic railroad line run past the property, giving the setting some character beyond the campground itself. The road fronting the sites is not heavily traveled, though sites sit close enough to it that campers with pets or kids who want to bike should be aware there is no shoulder.
Sites are compact. Multiple reviewers note the campground packs guests in tightly, and RV neighbors can find their slide-outs encroaching on adjacent picnic tables. That said, tent sites and smaller rigs tend to fare better, and one section of tent sites sits in a side canyon flanked by steep hills and rock faces. Each tent site comes with a roofed shelter covering the picnic table, a grill, and an electrical hookup. The shelters do not cover the tent pad itself, but campers have successfully rigged tarps from the shelter's edge for rain coverage.
Cleanliness is the most consistently mentioned attribute across reviews. Bathrooms and showers receive repeated praise, and the heated pool is noted as well-maintained, though not all campers end up using it. "The facilities are exceptionally clean," notes Kelly S., who also points out that tight sites are par for the course when camping in the Black Hills. Firewood and ice are available at the office. Cell coverage on T-Mobile has been reported as inconsistent, though the campground does provide WiFi.
RVs up to 40 feet are accommodated, with full hookups including electric, water, and sewer. Pull-through sites are available, though back-in sites require some maneuvering skill. Nearby alternatives worth considering include Backroads Inn & Cabins and Holy Smoke Resort for campers who want more space between sites. The season runs May 10 through October 1; reservations are accepted and worth making in advance during the busy summer months when the area around Rushmore draws heavy traffic.
