      Swallow Falls State Park Campground

Beautiful area with a waterfall hike

Lovely little campground in a beautiful forest, with a great waterfall hike walkable to the campground. I stayed in Garrett in October and it was still packed full of people, which for me was nice because I like feeling like I'm in a community of campers. But the sites were super close together, basically right now the main drag, not very private, especially without leaf cover, and a little smaller than I expected. But well kept, in more forest than I was expecting, and I enjoyed myself. The canyon trail was mobbed, but it was a stunning weekend so that's not surprising. Bathrooms in the offseason could have used a bit more attention, but they weren't too bad.

      Keystone State Park Campground

      Decent place

Stayed the weekend for the first time and it wasn’t bad! There were kids playing at sites nearby but that was all the noise, highway noise at all! I like how they have a spot for your tent with a picnic table and fire ring. I was in my rooftop tent on my truck so I wish the parking spot went back a little deeper for a little more privacy. But it was nice that there was bathrooms and showers within a 1 minute walk from the site! Also it says on here there is no AT&T signal, that’s not true…it’s not great but there is a bar or 2 at times!

Coopers Rock State Forest- McCollum Campground

      Beautiful location

The spots are spread out and the trees are beautiful. The people are so nice. The drive in is tight narrow lanes. We stayed one night at #49, pull through with water and electric, no sewer. We booked #43 but Becky moved us to 49 cuz it’s more level.

Kentuck Campground — Ohiopyle State Park

Restrooms, showers and visitor center get an F

Stayed one night. Close to Fallingwater and Fort Necessity.  The campsite was terrible; close to water and buggy, steep grade required lots of blocking to level the camper and challenging to hook up to the vehicle. Thick canopy kept Starlink from working. The worst part was the bathrooms. The one closest to our spot had no hot water. So we had to walk about a half a mile to two other restrooms and showers within 100 yards of each other. Makes no sense. Anyway, both bathrooms were filthy, had paint peeling everywhere, lots of black mold growing on the ceilings, growing everywhere. No place to hang clothes while taking a shower. One of the two toilets in each of the men’s room was probably 3 feet off the ground. Made for giants I guess!  And good luck finding the visitor center. It’s hidden from view and parking is terrible.  You’ll have to walk 150 yards from the nearest point of the parking lot to find it. To walk there from the bus and RV parking, add an additional 1/4 mile each way. Be aware that the visitor center store does not accept credit cards. Cash or check only. Who does that? It’s 2026 Pennsylvania!

Yough Lake Campground at Tub Run

      Fantastic for Family

We love it here so much we almost never leave. There is a creek, playground and games for the kids year round. The lake is great for fishing, boating, swimming and more from March-August usually but even longer this year it seems. They are INCREDIBLY strict about 5mph and I LOVE THAT! My 8 year old can run around and be a kid at camp like I was without me being panicked. They even have events once a month. They are constantly adding and upgrading around the campground. Everything from walk to primitive sites to full hook ups and dry cabins.

Highly recommend for a long or short get away.

Kentuck Campground — Ohiopyle State Park

      Pick the loop for you

I stayed at two sites at Ohiopyle and I’ll say it again—picking the loop that best fits your equipment is key to enjoying your camping experience here. Not all loops are created equal! My second, and heavy favorite, was my site on Ivy Road. The sites were had more privacy and most importantly, were far more level and easier to access. This loop/road is also more central to the rest of the campground, the dumpsters, and had access to much nicer (still a smidge dingy), larger bathrooms. The cell service here was also decent as this road is in a less hilly area within the campground.

While the park and town are excellent for exploring, I found that the highlight of my trip was Fallingwater—it’s a Frank Lloyd Wright house (personally, I think his best) that offers tours and I was shocked to find that it was less than 10 minutes away. If you need a break from hiking and the river, I cannot recommend it enough!

Kentuck Campground — Ohiopyle State Park

      Great, but…

My happiness with Ohiopyle SP started off rocky from the start due to two factors, which can also impact your stay:

      1. No matter what Google Maps tells you, try to avoid taking Sugarloaf Rd into the park—it’s a very steep dirt road that is not at all direct, despite popping you out in the middle of town (which was widely surreal as I landed in the middle of some kind of festival), but most importantly there is no cell service which is frustrating when you’re unexpectedly routed down backroads as night approaches

      2. which loop you stay in really matters, more so than many other parks I’ve stayed at. My first few nights were on Hickory road and many were small and wildly unleveled—I saw one individual give up trying to get his small RV backed in due to the site being a basin shape. So you truly need to do your research and find a site that fits your equipment. The bathroom in this leg was also small and dingy, to put it nicely, but serviceable. Personally, I would not stay in Hickory again.

That said, this is a beautiful park with phenomenal hiking and water adventures. The town (which is in the park) was also quaint and lovely, with a variety of food and shopping options.

      Laurel Hill State Park Campground

      Nice weekend getaway.

We had a great stay. Well manicured grounds. Lots of fallen trees from recent weather. Bathrooms could be cleaner. The camp hosts are awesome people. The area is quiet and peaceful. Lots of bike trails. Lake nice with swimming. Not crowded. Very family oriented. Playgrounds scattered around the campground in really good shape. We stayed at site 173. I loved it. Private. Had a little stream that ran behind it which would have been great for kids to play in. I loved the sound of running water. The fire pit and picnic table were in a little area above the stream surrounded by trees. It was so pretty and felt protected. They sell wood and awesome fire starters on site. Well priced. $5 for big bundle of split wood and $1 for each large fire starter. The Fire starters were so good, I bought extras to take with me. Definitely good quality. Not like the small ones you buy at the store. All in all, I loved it and will go back. I’ll take the grandkids next time. The lake, stream, biking, playground will keep them busy.
I have TMobile and had no cellphone service at my site. But could get service in other areas.
Site 225 looked like a great site. Up on a hill with a view, full hook up, playground close, and cell service.

    Guide to Perryopolis

Camping opportunities around Perryopolis, Pennsylvania range from rustic tent sites to furnished accommodations in the Laurel Highlands region. Located at approximately 1,010 feet elevation in southwestern Pennsylvania, this area experiences seasonal rainfall averaging 41 inches annually. Winter camping remains popular with heated cabins and yurts available from October through March when temperatures can drop below freezing.

    What to do

Whitewater rafting on the Youghiogheny River: Several outfitters in Ohiopyle State Park offer guided raft trips suitable for different experience levels. Campers can choose self-guided options for more experienced paddlers. "We chose Wilderness Voyageurs across the river, over the tracks and to the right. Time and finances limited us to a 'family friendly' float self-guided raft down the Middle Yough...laced with minimal Class 1 and 2 rapids, which I would classify as riffles. The float took three hours, was relaxing, serene and full of solitude," reports one visitor.

Fishing at local lakes: Just 20 minutes from Perryopolis, Madison-Pittsburgh S.E. KOA offers fishing opportunities in their small lake. "Lake-never seen anyone fish at the lake until this past stay and they caught a blue gill. They have a few small non motor boats no peddle boats so don't let that mislead you with 'boat rental'. You do see things jump so I don't doubt there's fish and it's really pretty in the backdrop," notes a recent camper.

Biking on the Great Allegheny Passage: The trail runs directly through several campgrounds in the region. "The GAP trail rolls right through the middle of this traditional KOA campground. The seasonal RVers and weekend warriors have long claimed their sites, but for through riders on the trail there is a special place to camp, close to the west-bound entrance," shares a cyclist who stayed at The Blue Canoe RV Resort.

    What campers like

Star gazing platforms: Benner's Meadow Run RV Campground features a dedicated observation area for night sky viewing. "Got a nice secluded spot to camp in the wooded area that had amazing mountain views and the star gazing platform," writes a visitor who appreciated the astronomical amenities, though some note that "The star gazing platform leaves a lot to be desired and is in need of repair."

Water activities beyond rafting: Coopers Rock State Forest provides natural settings for rock climbing enthusiasts. "I have been going here for years and I always love to climb this area. The pitches aren't too high (50ft) but great just to get out there an enjoy life!" reports one outdoor enthusiast. The area offers beginner to intermediate climbing routes.

Alternative glamping near Perryopolis, Pennsylvania: Unique accommodations like cannabis-friendly yurts at Laurel Highlands Hemp Cannabis Farm provide distinctive experiences. The property sits approximately 20 miles from Perryopolis and maintains a no-alcohol policy. A staff member notes, "This is a cannabis friendly campground that overlooks the Laurel Highlands Hemp field, and surrounding mountains. One yurt with a bed is offered. Please no alcohol. Friday nights are Toke With A Goat Yoga at 7 at the barn weather depending."

    What you should know

Road closures affect campground access: Seasonal road maintenance can significantly impact travel times. "No one - not either website or the woman whom I spoke to - mentioned that the main road to the campground from Ohiopyle was also closed due to a separate paving project. This unanticipated road closure with the typically convoluted PA road system detour - coupled with the fact that everyone in the town of Ohiopyle was telling visitors to the area that the campground was fully closed - infuriated my father and husband so much that we almost turned around and drove back home."

Limited grocery options: Most campgrounds have small stores with basic supplies, but stock up before arrival. "Camp store is sparse, they need to bring it up to date and offer more. Make sure you grocery shopping before you pull in," advises a KOA visitor. The nearest full-service grocery stores are in Greensburg, about 30 minutes from most Perryopolis area campgrounds.

Weather considerations: Laurel Hill State Park Campground campers should prepare for rapid weather changes. "We got rained out. However the trails looked nice and we hope to be back soon," notes a visitor who experienced typical regional precipitation. Spring camping often means muddy conditions, while summer thunderstorms can develop quickly in the mountains.

    Tips for camping with families

Water slides and attractions: Families consistently rate Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Mill Run highly for its water features. "Mill run by far the best yogi bear/campground we have been to. Second time we have been & they have upgraded the water slides 4 huge slides plus big splash pad with little slide for smaller kids & the original 2 big water slides in woods, had 25 people in group & everyone had a blast," writes one family camper.

Natural water play areas: Beyond constructed water parks, natural features provide family entertainment. Ohiopyle State Park offers natural water slides approximately 100 feet long. Families should arrive early for parking and wear sturdy clothing and footwear as the rock surface can be rough on swimmers.

Playground access: When selecting glamping options near Perryopolis, Pennsylvania, consider proximity to play areas. "They have a pool, fishing pond and a cloud pillow with the playground next to it along with two small dog play areas. Every week they organize different themes for bingo, and other games. They also have Sunday pancake days," notes a KOA visitor, highlighting amenities that keep children entertained.

    Tips from RVers

Site levelness varies significantly: RV campers frequently mention challenges with uneven sites. "I couldn't get it level with my Anderson levelers it was pretty slopped. On my way out I heard they were having someone come in to level the sites so I imagine it was just the time of year we visited," reports an RVer at Madison-Pittsburgh S.E. KOA.

Water access considerations: Kentuck Campground sites have limited water hookups. "The sites are pretty close together and we couldn't use our fire ring because it ended up being very close to our rig," notes one RVer, highlighting spacing concerns common in the area.

Electrical configurations: Fox Den Acres Campground offers both 30 and 50 amp service, but outlet placement can require extensions. Campers report the campground is "Very clean and quiet. The people selling firewood were the best!" though site conditions vary considerably throughout the property.
