Tenkiller Ferry Lake

Overview

Pettit Bay Campground on Tenkiller Ferry Lake is a recreational paradise for visitors looking for a well-kept waterfront facility, which offers convenient access for boating, swimming and wildlife viewing. It is located near the historic town of Tahlequah and attracts many campers who return year after year.

Recreation

Boating, fishing, water skiing, hiking, and swimming are some of the activities enjoyed by visitors. Prevailing winds and secluded coves create an ideal environment for sailing. Scuba divers enjoy the lake's clear waters and high visibility. Fishing is good for black bass, white bass, striped bass, crappie and catfish. The trout stream below the dam is one of only two year-round trout fisheries in Oklahoma, and is regularly stocked with rainbow trout. Hunting is also permitted in parts of the lake area, in accordance with federal and state laws.

Natural Features

Tenkiller Ferry Lake is often referred to as "Oklahoma's clear water paradise." The 12,500 acre lake is sourced by the Illinois River and the Baron Fork, which are both designated as Oklahoma Scenic Rivers. It is nestled in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains in the northeastern part of the state. This area, known as Green Country, is surrounded by dense oak-hickory forests, tall bluffs, and rolling hills. The lake has 130 miles of shoreline with plenty of wildlife such as deer and turkey. It serves as one of the flyways of migratory birds, including bald eagles, common loons, and white pelicans.

Nearby Attractions

Visit the Tenkiller State Park for its nature center and scuba diving park, the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge near Vian, or the historic city of Tahlequah - the capital of the Cherokee Nation. The scenic upper Illinois River near Tahlequah is great for canoeing and rafting, and the lower Illinois River near Gore offers prime trout fishing.

My kids loved it!

First of all this COE stays open all year We had lake access kind neighbors that our kids made friends with two parks one right across from our site and another up by the group showers (which has tons of pokers so we didn’t play there) we caught catfish off the bank and bolt huge fires beautiful foggy mornings and we watched all the leaves change colours every clear night we saw shooting stars it was great there is a little pub across the street from the COE only open on the weekends I believe I also suggest not going to Big Reds for breakfast there are better places to eat

Fall Camping

This was the second time we have camped here. We camped in Pettit Bay II area in November. Lots of birds. Beautiful landscapes. The water levels were down, but still plenty for the hardcore fishermen. Both campgrounds were about a quarter filled. Most sites are spaced well, with some a little closer. The only downside to this trip was the noise from the construction going on at the marina. That's temporary and we'll be back, although may take a different site next time!

Great Family Spot!

Pettit Bay is great for both tents and rv’s. The design is well thought out with plenty of room. The bathrooms are older but well maintained and the showers work. There’s a small playground and boat ramps. They’re also building a new marina!

Quaint little park

We stayed the week before the park officially opened, and found it to be a great little COE park. Right on the water.

Quiet spot

I stayed in spot 13 near the boat ramp. Still very quiet! Only noise came from an elderly mans lil yippie dog 😡 which never shut up and shit wherever it felt! Camp host was friendly but husband seemed a bit grumpy perhaps 😉 nonetheless I had an amazing time. Bathrooms could've been cleaned daily instead of weekly and swim beach sucks. We swam on boat ramp side and it was better...I'd still recommend it!!!
