What to do
Lake activities: easy shoreline access for fishing and swimming at Piedmont Lake Marina & Campground. The marina serves as a convenient hub for water recreation. "Piedmont lake is obviously the biggest draw for this campground. Home to some of the best fishing in Ohio, the lake is also a great place to cruise around for a while," notes Brannon M.
Kayaking: dedicated launches available at Clendening Lake Marina & Campground make water entry simple. The 9.9 hp boat restriction keeps the lake peaceful for paddlers. "We have visited this campground many times, we love to kayak and they are are setup with very nice kayak launches, the lake is amazing fishing spot with 9.9 hp boat restrictions," shares Tanner G.
Hiking: multiple trail systems connect throughout the region's forested areas. "The trails are well marked and the horse trails go on for miles and miles so if you have horses this is a great place to trail ride and if you're a hiker who is not afraid of horses, you can always enjoy the equestrian trails for some serious mileage!" describes Annie V.
What campers like
Quiet weekday camping: Weekdays provide a more peaceful experience at most area campgrounds. "We were one of the only people in the campground, so we ended up just moving to one of the more level campgrounds," reports Connor M., highlighting the flexibility available during off-peak times.
Modern full hookup sites: Tappan Lake Park Campground features newly developed concrete pads in Section 5. "Section 5 is the bomb!! We stayed in the 5-520-531 section. Sites are new, clean, full hookups, with plenty of paved surfaces to park. Camper sites are level and the hookups are new and easy to use," shares Jim F.
Free camping options: Budget-conscious campers can utilize Ronsheim Campground — Harrison State Forest for no-fee camping. "Well maintained campground with a handful of sites. Pit toilets. Nice fishing pond. Gun range nearby," explains Peter H. Another camper adds: "It's nothing much, there isn't much in the way of activity save a few trails. However if you like adding trails to your list or you're fine with driving a little bit to Harrison or Salt Fork, they aren't far away at all."
What you should know
Limited connectivity: Cell service is spotty throughout the region. "There is no cell service up there so be prepared, we lost it for about 20 minutes before the camp site. We have sprint. Make sure to pack a old school map so you can get around," advises Ashley E.
Variable site quality: Many campgrounds have uneven sites on hillsides. "A lot of un level sites," reports Bob about Barkcamp State Park Campground. At Sally Buffalo Park, locals know to request specific sites. "I have been camping here for 19 years it is a great spot," shares long-time camper Larry D.
Weather preparedness: Sudden thunderstorms can create muddy conditions quickly. "Everytime was a disappointment for some reason or another... But every site was horrible. Either unlevel, muddy or something," reports Theodore C. Consider bringing additional tarps and ground covers during rainy seasons.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly amenities: Look for campgrounds with dedicated play areas. "The park has a small camp store with the essentials and a small grill that had things like hamburgers, hotdogs, pizza, etc," notes one camper about Tappan Lake.
Beach access with children: Multiple beaches provide swimming options with varying facilities. "Nice beach area with toys for the kids and adults. Pet friendly. Nature center and store," shares Jason S. about Atwood Lake Park Campground.
Nature programs: Several parks offer seasonal educational activities. "Oglebay comes out and has star gazing when it's in season," mentions Fred R. about Barkcamp State Park Campground, which offers both astronomy nights and nature walks.
Tips for RVers
Full-hookup selection: Look for newer sections at established campgrounds for the best RV experience. "All sites are full hookups. The other 7 campers here this weekend all appear to be longer term/seasonal. This wasn't a problem for us as they were working during the day and quiet at night," notes Kathryn P. about Zion Retreat & RV Park.
Leveling challenges: Many sites require significant leveling. "There are a handful flatter spaces," advises Bobby C. Bring extra leveling blocks for campsites throughout the region.
Road conditions: Access roads can be challenging for larger rigs. "Make sure you have a good tow vehicle as there is a steep hill at the entrance/exit of the camp ground," warns Robert T. about Zion Retreat & RV Park.
