Just 30 miles north of Winston-Salem, Hanging Rock State Park is located in the Sauratown Mountain Range. Named for the early Saura peoples who once inhabited the area, this range towers over the surrounding country, with peaks reaching nearly 2600 feet in elevation. The park derives its name from the large quartzite escarpment that “hangs” over the valley below. Established in 1936, the park initially encompassed 3100 acres, but has grown to 7900 acres since 2015. With its proximity to the suburban areas of Stokes County, the park serves as a backyard playground for hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians, rock climbers, paddlers, anglers and campers. The 73-site campground in Hanging Rock State Park is an ideal basecamp for enjoying all the outdoor activities the park has to offer. Campsites can accommodate tents, popups and limited RVs; there are no hookups or dump stations at this location. Each site is equipped with picnic tables, grills and tent pads. Drinking water is available at several locations in the campground, and there are two bathhouses with hot showers. There are also five primitive group campsites with picnic tables and fire circles; drinking water and vault toilets are available nearby. If you don’t feel like roughing it, the park also offers 10 vacation cabins. Each of these are equipped with a kitchen, bathroom and sleeping accommodations for up to six. When you’re ready to play, there are more than 20 miles of multiuse trails in Hanging Rock State Park for hiking, biking and riding. Trails vary in length and difficulty, so drop by the visitor center and pick up a trail map. For the mobility impaired, there is a 0.1-mile path to the Rock Garden. Anglers can enjoy casting for bass, sunfish, and catfish either by boat or wading on the park’s small lake. Canoe and rowboat rentals are available for paddling on the lake, or you can bring your own gear for paddling or fishing on the Dan River. Rock climbing is permitted on the 400-foot-high Cook’s Wall and Moore’s Wall. For just kicking it under the trees, the park has several picnic areas, as well as an exhibit hall and concession stand.

I stayed on the “not great for kids” side. Camp host said the other part of the park was better for families and had easier trail inclines. I loved my spot. It was quieter than I expected given how close the camp sites were to each other.

I showed up after hours on a motorcycle looking for an overnight tent site. They didn't have tent sites available in the after hours check in. Luckily, John, who works maintenance, was near by. He opened up the office, checked me into a tent site and figured out how to give me a military discount even though that is not his job. John saved my night! The tent site was clean, level, grass and water and electric worked great. There was some noise from the interstate but expected in a tent. Restroom and shower facilities were clean and functional. My only staff interaction was with John and he was outstanding in customer service and going over the top to take care of getting me set up. Thank you!

This place was the first place we stopped along our trip to test out the new camper we just purchased, and this place was so wonderful and fun. We played mini golf, had a view of the lake, and enjoyed a great campfire on our little porch they provided. We truly had so much fun even though we only stayed one night! Can’t wait to come back.

Our favorite KOA yet. Beautiful campground, nestled into forest with pines, deciduous trees, and native Rhododendron. Beautiful. Clean sites and facilities. Just off 77 not far from Roanoke. Would stay here again!

My family planned a trip here, including our camper and 2 others. (3 sites total). Our camper needed work done and due to an unexpected sudden death in the family, taking the camper to be worked on 2 weeks prior to our planned visit was our only option. We called and explained the situation we were in and was spoken to VERY rudely. And was not able to get any of our money back. If there’s a possibility that you may have an unplanned death in the family that may complicate your trip, don’t book with them! We will NEVER plan another trip here!!

Personal highlights was the view in late fall and the close proximity to the hiking trails up Pilot Mtn. Tent pad was level and large. I am staying here for two weeks because I have a membership and because I am WFM and it enables me to travel.
I heard mixed reviews about this campground but since I had a 1000 Trails membership, I figured it was worth checking out.
It was a beautiful drive from Virginia and though we arrived in early evening, the Rangers were very nice and helped us get checked in.
The sight was a little uneven and took a bit to level but it is surrounded by trees and very quiet. Most of the yẹar round resident had some kind of Halloween decoration up so the park looked great. They even had a little haunted house set up for the kids.
All in all, this is a very pleasant campground and makes the membership worth it. It's quiet, it's pretty, and you are right between Lexington and Winston Salem. I'm looking forward to coming back over Christmas.

Cons, not great around our fire pit, you can’t really sit around the fire pit because it’s not leveled, chars just fall. Not great if you don’t get a level spot if you have small children. It’s very rocky and small children will fall often. Not fun as a parent. A big con if you absolutely cannot deal with spiders. Ok. So this one might be a bit dramatic to some, however, if you don’t love bugs, be warned that there are hundreds of daddy long legs, just so so so many. And they get everywhere. We don’t mind bugs. We understand camping in tents will be bug heaven. We just didn’t expect to see hundreds. You have been warned. Site 14

As a beginner too RV camping, this location was an excellent beginning. The campground host were courteous and friendly and they assisted me in backing in my trailer. The bath house was an unexpected luxury and was immaculately maintained through the park service. Lastly, it’s in a beautiful area with a lot of available outdoor activities.

TravelerI typically steer clear of KOA's because most of the sites are super close together. This KOA is different! There is a row towards the front that are pretty close together, but I think they use those for one-nighters. We were in a tent and loved our spot. The staff was UNBELIEVABLY awesome and nice. They have a pool, a pond, a playground, a dog park, and a great camp store. The bathrooms and laundry room are exceptionally clean. If you order ice or firewood, they bring it to your site. They also have food you can order and they will bring it to your site. I am sure there are many things I am forgetting, but this is a must stay and we will be back.
ScoutStayed here overnight. Site was not even close to level. Recent blacktop not properly compressed. Had to use Anderson leveling buckets only on front of motorhome to level. The next morning they had sunken into the soft blacktop. I tried to call office, there was no answer so I left a message. Later that day I received 25 threatening and demeaning texts from the owner. Later, that day the owner arbitrarily charged my credit card $500.00. Avoid this campground at all costs.

We have been happy members of Thousand Trails for several years and have created several friend groups of whom I hope would verify my claim as accurate. My husband, Paul(OP), has always had the heart of a servant and has helped many throughout Lake Myers and Forest Lake. He enjoys playing cork hole and building campfires. We have so many wonderful friends at the campgrounds that we hang out with even when we don’t have our camper in. It has always been a source of stress relief and relaxation for us. We have never been ones to instigate gossip or spread it. We sit quietly to ourselves or with friends, play corn hole and enjoy the fire, food& friendships. Our dog LOVES to exercise on the golf cart trails! Last YEAR, one of the teen boys that lives in the campground full time came to our site and invited our 16 y/o(at the time) son to join him and a gang of other kids that found a villa unlocked. The private investigator we hired found out that the number of kids involved goes into the double digits. We advised Susan, the manager, of the identity of as many involved as we could. Our son was not involved in the actual damage and nothing further was said to us by Susan or any other representative of Lake Myers, Thousand Trails or Encore. Charges were attempted against our son alone, but when our attorney advised that all kids involved or none(some parents had already paid restitution… I offered but was not responded to) were to be charged then charges were dropped. We have been camping every 2 weeks in and one week out at Forest Lake with no problems at all until recently when my husband couldn’t get logged into our account to make his payment. I tried as well and couldn’t get logged in. Turns out that our entire national membership has been canceled by the Lake Myers manager with the reasoning of“unsupervised child”. That is totally falsified. How many of you see Mon or Dad following their older kids around? Our son had never cause any trouble. Funny, the kid that lives there who coaxed our son to the villas still lives there on site because his mom works for a prominent attorney that I guess Lake Myers is afraid of.(Well, mine is good too!) Ban our son from Lake Myers? Fine… but ban all the ones involved, don’t do it out of retaliation against us because you lack evidence. Want to ban our whole innocent family from Lake Myers? Fine… but ban all the families of those involved. If your going to accept money of one mom to let her stay because she works for an attorney, then the offer needs to be given to all. But why cancel our whole family national membership? THAT is excessive and we will be filing a lawsuit if it’s not fixed asap. We just bought a brand spanking new camper, new golf cart, paid membership fees(I want refunded if our membership is not going to be honored due to a dishonorable and unethical manager with no factual evidence and can apparently be paid off). Seriously! Existing campers can’t complain publicly about anything at the campground without the fear of their memberships being terminated for it. This is morally wrong. I have contacted membership services just to be told they can’t do anything. I call BS. This needs a fair resolution immediately.
LegendAwesome place! Campgrounds were nice and spaced out, well maintained...we were right by a small stream that you could hear...stone loop mountain trail is incredible! Long and strenuous but all ages were hiking it...homestead was so neat to walk around at the base of the mountain. Only negative is there showers. Very frustrating....you have to push the shower head to get water...great way to conserve but it gave you no time to enjoy the water. Made it hard to shower and it came out blasting all over the place....only complaint :)
