  Deep River Campground And RV Park

  Clean,affordable, and friendly staff

  Took a weekend trip to Deep River Campground in Asheboro, NC. Very well kept, level spots, pet friendly, big rig friendly with pull through and back-in sites available. Full hook-ups (50 & 30 amp). Fire pit and picnic tables at each site. About $40 a night, no deposit required. With weekly and monthly rates as well. 2 pools (currently closed due to covid), game room, store, and private pond. Located minutes away from multiple trail heads. We were on lot 20, which is a double space designed for a larger rig, very private with lots of shade.

  Midway Campground Resort

  Family-Friendly

  This is a small, family-friendly campground. There is a pond for fishing, a nice pool, a jump pad, playground, arcade, and mini-golf. Plenty for kids to do. The best feature is a haunted trail at Halloween (this gets very busy so be aware if you plan to camp around this time of year). Sites are not necessarily level and big rigs might have a hard time navigating the campground, but folks are friendly and it's a nice place to spend a few days. They do offer long-term sites if you need to stay in the area for a while.

  Doughton Park Campground — Blue Ridge Parkway

  Quiet Mountain Campground

  On the Blue Ridge Parkway, nestled in the trees and mountains of North Carolina, this campground has been well maintained. Sites are ample but the asphalt pads were designed for shorter travel trailers, but include an extra pad for the tow vehicle. Many of the sites have upgraded concrete pads for the picnic table and built-in fire pits. There are no showers in the trailer (RV) loop, but does include a couple comfort station with flush toilets. Campground hosts were helpful and friendly. Sites are split between first come first serve and reservations. Payment at kiosk by credit card only.

  Mayberry Campground

  Big Rig Friendly

  This campground is probably 90% big rigs. It’s a huge campground with 2 lakes, playground, RV store and shelter houses. There is only one shower house with one shower and two toilets on each side. Pet friendly on leash. Close to Mount Airy for those over 60 who want a trip down Memory Lane.

  Ararat River Campground

  Wonderful owners

  The new owners have revamped this campground. From what I’ve heard, this wasn’t the place to go prior to the ownership change. The owners here care about everyone at the campground, and keep it nice and clean. They also expect their full time campers to keep their lots and campers in good condition. Both owners are very approachable and respectful. Campground is just a short hike to the Ararat River. Which is why the new name is Ararat River Campground. No tent camping, but 30 amp and 50 amp camper hookups are available with sewage. In the warm months the owner holds church services in the pavilion behind lot 12. Owners offer a flat monthly rate that includes water, electric, wifi, and campground maintenance.

  Deep River Campground And RV Park

  Unlevel & messy

  We made a mistake. My wife and I are moving to North Carolina, and we were looking for a place to stay for a month in the Asheboro area. I checked around and Deep River was the only local campground with long-term sites available, so I made the reservation. The owner, Scott, was very helpful throughout the reservation process and we thought we were going to have a good experience. 

  When we showed up, Scott met us at the office and he took us to the "most level site" he had available. I was a little concerned from the start because the sewer pipe was sitting at a 45 degree angle and it was half buried in the ground. I had to help dig out the pipe and when I looked inside I noticed the connection was broken and any drainage would  have leached directly into the ground. Additionally, the sewer connection was more than 40 feet from the center of the site and I only carry 30 feet of line, so we had to back way up in order to hook-up. Unfortunately, that meant that our primary slide was within 3 feet of a giant pine tree so there was barely enough room to open it. Another problem with being so far back in the site was how unlevel the camper was. It took a while for me to get the trailer unhitched and by the time I had it nearly level, I had used all of my blocks and the jack was extended to the maximum height. Needless to say, I did not feel very comfortable with the arrangement and I was really starting to question whether or not to stay. 

  Then I started looking around at the site and there was trash everywhere with broken pieces of metal and half chewed dog bones strewn about. I looked at my wife and I could tell she was not happy. So I got on my phone, called another campground and made reservations. Scott was understanding, he tried to talk us into trying another site but by that time we had decided to move on. I will give Scott credit, he didn't charge us a cancellation fee, so that was good.

  A quick note, the WiFi was limited to close to the office and we would have had to pay Spectrum for a monthly internet connection. Also, Verizon cell coverage was weak.

  Doughton Park Campground — Blue Ridge Parkway

  Great, quiet campground

  Doughton Park CG: (Scale 1- bad, 5-Very good (70 yr olds in 17’ trailer) Overall Rating: 4.5 Price: $10/ night w senior pass Usage during visit: low due to rain Site Privacy: some, like ours - #9, are very good Site Spacing: some sites are nicely space and some are pretty close. Site surface: Blacktop Reservations: Yes Campground Noise: Very quiet during our stay. A small group of folks, older, play music together on a regular basis. Bring your instrument and join them. One plays a lot of Gordon Lightfoot - they were friends. Low key and quiet. Very, very enjoyable.
  Road Noise: Sites 1 and 2 are close to the parkway. The rest of the sites are set far enough back that, maybe motorcycles can be heard. Right now through there is no through traffic as a nearby portion of the parkway is in the middle of a 3 year construction project. Through Traffic in campground: None Electricity: No Water: Availability at the dump station and one faucet.
  Sewer Hook up: No Dump Station: Yes Generators: Allowed Bathroom: Small and clean. Showers: No Pull Throughs: Most or all are back in.
  Cell Service (Verizon): Good from our site Setting: Deciduous forest on high ground. Weather: Unseasonably wet during our stay. 4 days of almost non-stop rain
  Bugs: None Solar: Fixed solar panels might work in sites 1 and 2. Host: Present. Rig size: There are a couple 30 to 35’ rigs here Sites: #9, our site, is one of the best sites we have had in almost 4 years of travel. The regulars call this site the “honeymoon site”, because of the heart shaped large rocks which create a lower terraced picnic area. Best sites: 9 very best, 4, 8, 7. Next best: 5,21,19. Nice but picnic area is not quite as private: 20, 18,16,14,12,11,10. All other sites along the outer side of the loop I would be happy with. The exception are sites 1 and 2. These two sites are along the parkway.

  Lake Norman State Park Campground

  Beautiful park, great facilities

  Full hookups were all filled but site 29 was a primitive, deep, level 57 foot site right near water siphon and a beautiful modern bathhouse picnic table and fire grate/ring. Fair amount of space between sites, firewood sold by camphost or ranger. Made yummy hot dogs over fire, wonderful night, hot showers, clean facilities. You will be thrilled with this park, lake is beautiful, many hiking trails, biking, etc. Verizon cell service was excellent at our site and appeared good throughout park.

  Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground

  Small Family Owned CG on the Blue Ridge Parkway

  The campground is so convenient to the BRP! The owners are friendly and easy to talk to. The campground is clean, scenic, and hilly.  We had no issue navigating with our 27' trailer.  We saw several class A's and a large 5th wheel here too.  All RV sites are on gravel and level. Sites are full hookup with 20, 30, and 50 amp receptacles available  Firewood is available.   We used the 2-washer laundry (not coin-op $5 wash and dry paid at office) with no issues.  Yesterday we drove to nearby Mt. Airy (Mayberry) and enjoyed the Andy Griffith Museum.  We would definitely stay here again.
