      Fort Drum Recreation Area

      A beautiful place to stay

With my family and pets in tow, we took a weekend and committed it to nature and ourselves. Remington is a Military campground, but for the several military families looking to disconnect a couple of miles from home this would be it.

They offer regular camping sites and RV sites, they also have a dog park for the little furry ones.

It is easy to get to and several forms of outdoor entertainment.. Remington is a b autiful well kept place and I could spend my summer there.

      Delta Lake State Park Campground

      Delta Lake State Park

Delta Lake State Park sits at the foothills of the Adirondack Park, just outside Rome, New York. Pretty and well-kempt, Delta Lake is a nice option for those looking to stay close to home and within proximity to civilization. You can enjoy the great outdoors, while only being a few miles away from a restaurant or grocery store.

The campground isn‘t the best I’ve experienced, a bit on the crowded side-similar to a woodsy suburb- but this could have been distinctive to Loop A where I stayed. I stayed in site 35 and was intermixed with all the campers and RV’s, so it got a bit noisy. Not that restful, secluded experience I typically go for, but I should have planned further in advance.

However, what the park lacked in terms of its campground, it totally made up for in its beach, swimming and picnic areas! This place was awesome for hosting a birthday party for my niece and relaxing at the beach/ day facilities. They have plenty of picnic tables, charcoal grills, a huge beach and locker rooms. This is really a great place to spend a day with your family!

      Southwick Beach State Park Campground

Great part with tons of beach

There is TONS of beach to explore at this little State Park in New York. I used to visit here as a kid years ago because my grandparents owned a cottage on the lake. Since they sold it, visiting Southwick is the next best thing. Lake Ontario is an amazing lake to be on and the water is pretty warm in the summer time. the waves don't get too big, so it is very safe for kids. Southwick itself has great camping spots right next to the beach. It is a little pricey if you only want to visit for the day, $8, but you can get a tent spot for $18 which is comparable to other state parks. Showers are available, and there are some short trails that are good for running or probably cross country skiing in the winter. There is also a sizable playground near the beach that is great for the kids.

Yogi Bears Jellystone Park Camp Resort at Mexico

      Great Salmon fishing....Mexico NY

This is our 4th experience at a Jellystone. The campground was clean and staff was super nice. Organized the Halloween activities nicely. Yogi and the characters were very involved. For the fisherman, it's located on Salmon River and appears to have quite a lot of large salmon this time of year. I was shocked at the size of the fish that were being cleaned. My husband believes that area of the river was a private sector for the campground. Smaller campground than others I have been too but made it nice for kids to rides bikes safely since there weren't golf carts located at this campground. What I didn't enjoy as much. 1) The sites were muddy, especially when it had recently rained. Luckily we came after it rained and it had dried out some. 2) the dog park was a walking area, not a fenced in yard for them to let some of their energy out 3) No sewer hookups available but does had a dump station on your way out.

      Wellesley Island State Park Campground

crowded. fine if you're spending your days on the water

We came to this campground after a week in Algonquin Provincial park in Canada and the contrast couldn't have been greater. Up north we stayed on a large, shady site in a radio free loop and everyone had canoes. In New York we had a cramped, open site and everyone seemed to have a motorboat on a trailer. Our neighbors across the road set up a movie screen . The overall feel was NOT "getting away from it all".
The facilities are good and there's a nice beach and well stocked General store, also a big boat ramp facility with some docks.
We chose this location because we were attending the Antique Boat Show in Clayton, 13 miles away, and this was the closest available. It suited us just fine for that.
Keep your stuff secure, there are brazen raccoons.

      Green Lakes State Park Campground

Green Lakes is a model state park

This is a great example of what a state park should be. It not only preserves a place of unique biological diversity and geologic interest, it is also well set up and well maintained to maximize low impact outdoor recreation and environmental education. A new state of the art regional environmental education center is being built now that will open in spring, as well as new handicapped access kayaking docks that complement Accessible trails and campsites throughout the park. This is a great destination for families, handicapped campers, and natural history enthusiasts. There are several campgrounds, one is large and open and meant for large RVs, others are drive-in forested tent sites or trailer sites with hookups, and several walkin sites. There is also a colony of rustic camper cabins. The campgrounds have brand new restroom facilities and playgrounds, and the main lake has a new beach house. The lake is a fascinating meromictic lake with clear calcium-rich waters that are not only pristine and beautiful to look at, but also great for swimming and snorkeling as the waters are crystal clear and very deep. There are hiking trails, paved bike trails, a nature preserve for bird watching at Round Lake, a golf course, and great kayaking or canoeing. It is also located right next door to the Erie Canal State Park for those who want to hike or bike the historic Erie Canal. Though you might expect a park like this to be in a remote location, it is actually just a short distance east of the suburbs of the Syracuse metro area, so it is an easy park to get to, plus staying there also provides easy access to stores for supplies, or access to local cultural activities or restaurants for those who want that. One of my favorite state parks in New York!

      Oneida Shores County Park

Campground was great, other patrons…not so much

My husband and I camped here from 6/17/22 - 6/19/22.

We had a great and relaxing time until Saturday evening when the three dogs at a neighboring site all slipped their collars and began running around the campground growling and charging at other patrons. One of them came at myself and my parents who were visiting. I absolutely came very close to being bit by a dog that was trying to charge at my mother but my husband intervened and began swinging a hot dog poker at the dog which caused it to bolt towards a campsite that had multiple little kids at it.

Someone called the Onondaga county police who came and spoke to the campground manager and I believe they warned the dog owners. But in the end the dogs were allowed to stay.

All in all we had a nice time. My only wish would be that the management would be more unaccepting of obviously dangerous pets.

There are mens and womens bathrooms, each with multiple stalls. Showers are available but a bit far from the actual campground. Water was warm but the water pressure wasn’t great. Ice and firewood for sale at the campsite.

    Guide to Mannsville

Pet friendly camping near Mannsville, New York centers around the Lake Ontario shoreline where campers experience significant temperature fluctuations due to lake effect weather patterns. Summer temperatures typically range from 65-85°F, with cool evening breezes common even during July and August. Several campgrounds in this region sit on sandy shorelines where seasonal water level changes can affect beach access and campsite drainage during heavy rainfall.

    What to do

Salmon fishing access points: At Winona Forest CCC Camp, visitors can enjoy self-sufficient camping near excellent fishing areas. "This is a hub for several snow mobile, cross country ski, and snow shoe trails. Several folks visited on Saturday and Sunday to enjoy the last bit of the snow," notes camper Quade S., highlighting the multi-seasonal appeal beyond summer months.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: The Mannsville area offers multiple lake viewing spots. "Lake Ontario has great fishing. The beach is smaller than it was before now that it is guarded. This is a great spot for large gatherings," shares Zen W. about Selkirk Shores State Park. Early mornings provide the best opportunities to observe waterfowl.

River activities with pets: Yogi Bears Jellystone Park Camp Resort provides river access for humans and dogs alike. One camper mentions, "This is a great place to stay if you have children. The kids had a blast playing the river, heck the adults had fun too." The Little Salmon River offers gentle wading spots suitable for dogs and humans.

    What campers like

Spacious lakefront sites: Southwick Beach State Park Campground receives consistent praise for its generous camping areas. "BEST beach in CNY-sandbar goes on forever-campsites roomy and we'll taken care of-bathrooms are meticulously cleaned," reports Theresa F., who camps there 3-5 times yearly.

Clean facilities throughout the area: Bathroom cleanliness stands out as a regional strength. "Bathrooms were immaculate. Store only takes cash," notes Gabrielle C. about Southwick Beach, while another camper observed, "Beautiful new buildings on site, variety of campsites. Favorites are the beachfront sites."

Sunset viewing opportunities: Sun Outdoors Association Island offers remarkable sunset views. "This place is amazing! It's not fancy but the location is spectacular. We were treated to gorgeous sunsets and minimal light pollution at night. The stars were everywhere," shares Donna C., highlighting the astronomical viewing opportunities after sunset.

    What you should know

Limited recycling options: Most campgrounds provide minimal recycling facilities. At Selkirk Shores State Park, "There are dumpsters here, and there's recycling for redeemable bottles and cans only, with proceeds going to the campground's rec center. That was the most recycling I've seen offered at a NY state park campground yet."

Campground layouts vary significantly: Westcott Beach State Park Campground features distinct camping areas. "We have only camped the electric loop up on the hill across the Street from the rest of the park. It is spacious and restroom buildings are kept up," explains Theresa F., referencing the separate plateau camping area.

Weather contingency planning required: Lake Ontario creates unpredictable conditions. "Got to the park on Friday night with storms looming about. Our fire out was underwater. Lake Ontario was so high, there was barely any beach, and the wind was insane," recounts one Southwick Beach camper, demonstrating how quickly conditions change.

    Tips for camping with families

Activity scheduling for various ages: Jellystone Park offers organized events throughout the day. One visitor details the options: "Crafts, Games, Activities, Playground, Pool, Bouncy pillow, Twice Daily wagon rides with Yogi and Boo Boo, Bike parades, River access, Fishing, Tubing, Lounging." Scheduling around these activities helps maximize enjoyment.

Playground proximity matters: Brennans Bay Campground and Marina provides centralized recreation. "The park has a nice pool, pavilion, store and kids playground with a basketball court. Great area for fishing, bass, trout, salmon and walleye," explains Jim G., noting the convenience of having multiple amenities clustered together.

Beach crowding considerations: Timing affects beach enjoyment. "The beach is nice but can get crowded," mentions a Westcott Beach visitor, while another notes, "Nice new children's playground. Nice hiking trail as well." Visiting beaches on weekdays or early mornings reduces congestion.

    Tips from RVers

Pull-through site availability: Ontario Shores RV Park offers specialized RV spots. "There are 7 overnight pull thru full hookup sites with concrete patio. Sites are level and spacious," reports Tim W., highlighting the premium options available without needing to back in.

Dumping station logistics: Several campgrounds feature improved facilities. At Selkirk Shores, "There's a nice new dump station with several dumps and potable water. Good cell reception for both Verizon and ATT." This information helps RVers plan their tank management.

Weather protection planning: Seasonal RVers should prepare for wind. At Association Island, one camper noted, "Our site backed up to the water and although it was windy they thought ahead and built the fire pit up to block it," demonstrating the thoughtful design elements that improve the RV camping experience despite challenging lake winds.
