Coyote calls at night and rutted dirt roads by day set the tone along Forest Road 558, a dispersed camping area within Carson National Forest north of Ojo Caliente. FS-558 runs several miles south of Highway 285, and road conditions matter here. The first few sites near the highway are manageable in a 2WD vehicle with decent clearance, but the road gets rougher further in, and wet conditions make it inadvisable for any vehicle. No toilets on site. Trash is a known issue in places, though reviewers report finding clean spots without much difficulty. Campers who have used this area note that dispersed camping near Carson National Forest follows similar no-frills patterns throughout the region. A good fit for self-sufficient campers with high-clearance rigs who want open desert terrain and access to nearby climbing at El Rito.
