Rio Grande Gorge BLM

This free Bureau of Land Management campground provides dispersed camping along the Rio Grande Gorge with drive-in and walk-in access. The access road features deep ruts requiring higher clearance vehicles, making it unsuitable for trailers or low cars. Campers find several pull-off spots along the canyon rim, some large enough for multiple parties.

The gorge drops dramatically from the camping area down to the Rio Grande river below, with high mountains visible in the distance and rolling sagebrush terrain behind the sites. Verizon provides 2-3 bars of cell service. The soft sandy ground requires caution when creating camping spots off established areas to avoid getting stuck. Campfires are permitted, and hikers can access trails into the gorge system. This spot works well for self-sufficient campers with appropriate vehicles who want camp sites near Carson without fees or crowds.

Nice spot to camp outside of Tao

Quiet place to camp! Many options! Beautiful views. Was able to watch the sunset and sunrise! Would be more comfortable in a camper van or trailer. We tent camped and it was very windy when setting it up! But in a pinch definitely a go to spot!

Unique spot

Road is a little rough but manageable. Wouldn't want to do it with a trailer or in a car because the road is rutted and needs some clearance. 3 bar verizon signal. You go out a road and then you see a massive gourge open up out of the ground it looks like a mini grand canyon. Down in the deeps is the Rio grande river. Amazing views with high mountains off in the distance. Back behind you is rolling sagebrush. The road goes along the canyon a way andnthen hits backup onto anothet road. There are a few pull offs. Some are big enough you can double up and not bother anyone. The ground is SOFT be very careful about making your own spot or going off the road. You may get stuck in sand

Beautiful views!

Pros: beautiful views, crazy amount of visible stars at night, 2 bars of Verizon, not anyone around, close to town, not many bugs, quite a few spots to setup camp

Cons: some deep ruts driving into here but we were fine in a 2wd van, kind of dangerous with the drop off right next to the spot but it's expected here
