Within Toiyabe National Forest, Harris Springs / Spring Mountains Dispersed offers free boondocking across several scattered sites accessible by a gravel road that climbs the hillside. The Forest Service manages this dispersed camping area where RVs up to 27 feet can navigate the initial steep approach, though Tom B. notes "maybe 6 sites accessible for a travel trailer."
The main camping spots sit atop the hill with additional sites found along side roads further back. Wild burros graze throughout the area, and campers report good cell reception for both major carriers. The elevation provides cooler temperatures than Las Vegas, making summer stays more comfortable. Some sites offer expansive views while others tucked into side roads provide more wind protection from the mountain drafts that funnel down from the main peaks.
Access involves driving up Harris Springs Road, an unpaved but well-maintained route that intimidates some visitors initially. The road proves wider and smoother than it appears from below. A rehabilitation facility operates in the back area, generating periodic vehicle traffic, though most campers find this doesn't significantly impact their stay. Places to camp around Toiyabe National Forest include several other dispersed options within the same forest system.
The 14-day limit applies, and no permits are required. Come fully stocked since the nearest services require a 30-minute drive back toward Las Vegas.
Description
Dispersed camping allows you to “get away from it all.” Peace, solitude and adventure are some of the advantages to choosing an undeveloped campsite. Since there are no facilities, you must bring your own water, camp at least 100 feet from all water sources and dig a hole at least six inches deep for disposal of human waste. Remember all Forest rules and regulations apply even in dispersed sites.
