Peaceful and pretty

We got in late, but had no problem finding it and setting up. We just stayed for one night, but it was great. It’s right by Sawmill Trail head if you are going there.

Further up the mountain

We went further up near intersection of 157 and 158. Lots of open spots and almost no one around. Height of your rig could limit site selection. Even with high roof Sprinter we had some issues with low branches. Lots of shade. No real views, but lots of privacy. Some trash. Not horrible, but a good reminder to pick up after yourself so we can keep these public lands open.

Lots of Spots In This Area

After a near disastrous attempt at finding a spot in the Champion Rd area (thought we would get stuck on that road) we came back down the hill and found this nice spot that was very easy to get to in our 26ft class c.

Even though we weren't at very high elevation, the weather was still cooler than Vegas, which was nice.

Cell reception was very, very weak.  The Verizon phone had a glimmer of an LTE signal with the cell booster, but the ATT phone had nothing other than a couple of texts popping up on a hike.

Our favorite part about this spot was all the hiking trails within walking distance.  Right across the highway is the Sawmill Trailhead which is where 4 different trails start, varying lengths so you can choose your difficulty.  Lots of horses use these trails as well so keep your dogs on leash.  The trailhead also has garbage bins and toilets in the day use area which was very convenient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are the dispersed camping areas on Mt. Charleston?

Spring Mountains Dispersed camping offers multiple areas for camping around Mt. Charleston. Popular spots include areas near the intersection of Routes 157 and 158, which provide good access and privacy among the trees. The Champion Road area is another option, though it can be challenging to navigate with larger rigs. There's also dispersed camping available near the Sawmill Trailhead, which is relatively easy to access. Most sites are nestled among the trees, offering shade but limited views. Site availability varies by vehicle size, with high-clearance vehicles having more options, especially in the higher elevation areas.

What amenities are available at Spring Mountains camping areas?

Spring Mountains Dispersed camping areas are primitive with no formal amenities. You won't find water sources, toilets, picnic tables, or trash service. These sites offer basic camping in a natural setting with shade from surrounding trees. Some areas have existing fire rings, but you should be prepared to pack out all waste. The lack of facilities means you need to be self-sufficient with water, sanitation, and supplies. The main appeals are the cooler temperatures compared to Las Vegas, natural surroundings, and proximity to hiking trails like the Sawmill Trail. Vehicle accessibility varies by location, with some areas better suited for smaller rigs.

Is free camping available at Mt. Charleston?

Yes, free dispersed camping is available at Mt. Charleston in the Spring Mountains area. These no-fee sites operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Most dispersed areas have no designated campsite markers, allowing campers to find open spots among the trees. The areas near Routes 157 and 158 intersection and by Sawmill Trailhead offer accessible free camping options. While camping is free, remember to practice Leave No Trace principles as some areas have issues with trash accumulation.
