Otter Creek Fishing Access

The sound of the river is audible from nearly every camping spot at Otter Creek Fishing Access, a dispersed site managed by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks along the banks outside Big Timber. Shade is limited. Most of the open ground runs riverside without significant tree cover, though a handful of spots do sit beneath some trees if campers arrive early enough to claim them.

Capacity here is modest, and that matters for planning. One reviewer counted roughly five defined spots before an open grassy field takes over, and a visit during peak season found those spots already full. The field provides overflow room, but the grass had grown extremely high during a June visit, and privacy across the site is minimal. Crowding is a real possibility on summer weekends.

The access site exists primarily to serve anglers and boaters. A vault toilet and boat ramp sit to the north, giving the area basic infrastructure without developed campground amenities. As Steve M. noted, "you can fall asleep to the sounds of the river rushing by," which captures what the site does reliably provide. Fishing access along Otter Creek is the draw, not the campsite comforts.

Campers who want more developed options nearby can look at Spring Creek Campground & Trout Ranch to the southwest. For this site specifically, arriving early on summer weekends gives the best chance of securing one of the shaded spots before the riverside openings fill.

Campers regularly cited the beautiful riverside setting with varied camping spots from open fields to limited shaded areas. Basic facilities include vault toilets and fire pits, but visitors must pack out trash.

A great overnight stop.

Dispersed camping. We were able to find one of the few spots in the shade and it was right off the river. A great way to cool down after a super hot, long day on the road. We got here at 5 on a Thursday and was able to find a spot. Bring your own water. And the toilet is very clean!!

Close to town and sweet!

Several areas for campers and travel trailers and even big rigs and popular area for fishing so rather than normal BLM 14 days it's a 7-Day Max but it's beautiful just next to the river so you can hear it while you're sleeping

Very close to town w/exc river access

Only four or five spots right next to the river but plenty of open spots in the field next to where people Park their boats. This is a beautiful and tranquil spot with wonderful views and apparently great fishing but if you're going to fish make sure you get your license because the warden hangs out here! Great cell phone service and a vault toilet but no garbage so pack it out. There are some existent fire pits that people made and there is currently no fire ban here. Second time here in 2 years and probably won't be my last.

25 ft from the Yellowstone River

Interesting that there is no review because I stayed here last summer and left a review with pictures. There aren't many trees but there are many open places to camp alongside the river. To the north is a boat ramp and Vault toilets because this is a fishing area but there are plenty of spots both in the open and a few under some trees and you can fall asleep to the sounds of the river rushing by.
