Cottonwood Reservoir Dispersed Camping

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Managed by the State of Montana under DNRC rules, Cottonwood Reservoir sits just north of campsites near Wilsall along Highway 89, accessed through a Texas gate off the main road. The road in is genuinely rough. Multiple visitors flag large holes, uneven surfaces, and sections that require high clearance, with one noting that big rigs and trailers should stay out. Four-wheel drive is the practical minimum for reaching spots closest to the water.

The reservoir is the main draw here. Sites sit directly adjacent to it, with open sightlines toward the surrounding Montana mountains. The DNRC section holds Yellowstone cutthroat trout and white suckers, making it a workable stop for anglers. Waterfowl move through seasonally. No fee is required, no bathrooms are provided, and there are no fire rings, so campers need to arrive fully self-sufficient.

"Stars at night amazing," notes owen T., who also observed seasonal waterfowl passing through. Crowds are minimal. Cell service is listed as available, though the area is otherwise completely primitive. Nearby alternatives include Battle Ridge Dispersed to the southwest and Porcupine Cabin to the northeast for those wanting more structured accommodations in the region.

This spot works best for self-contained campers in high-clearance vehicles who want direct water access and low foot traffic without paying a fee.

Windy and beautiful

Rough road to get to the water, then beautiful views. 11 mph winds tonight but supposed to die down.

Very hard to find at night

This place seemed promising at first. It was hard to find a decent spot at night due to only using headlights of my van. Most of the road is extremely rugged/uneven/full of large holes. The only place I was able to stay for the night was the road leading up to the locked gate. This is about the only nice spot. Other than that this place is • quiet w/occasional traffic along the high way (right next to reservoir) • very few people here, but far enough away from me • no fee required • provides OK view to the mountains • great when you bring along a pet • you will need to be fully prepared for primitive camping

Overnight at a lake with mountain view

A few sites, close toe Hyw 89 through a Texas gate. We camped for a night and it's a beautiful space with stunning views and a reservoir right at the spots. No fire rings a little bit a rough road 4x4 and higher clearance recommended. Better no enter with big rigs or trailer. But a beautiful place to spend time.
