Fly fishing the Boulder River and casting for trout in stocked ponds draw many campers to Spring Creek Campground and Trout Ranch, set along the river outside Big Timber, Montana. A small creek runs through the center of the property, and riverfront sites back directly up to the water. Note that the ponds are now state-stocked, which means a Montana fishing license and standard regulations apply, a change from the earlier pay-per-catch setup. Wildlife is plentiful in the surrounding area, and Natural Bridge Falls is a short drive down the road.
Sites are gravel, level, and vary considerably in size and hookup configuration. Some riverfront spots are tight for larger rigs, while pond-side sites tend to give more room to maneuver. Susan & Kevin W. describes one of the better spots as a "spacious and level gravel pad with large grassy area on patio side." Full hookups including 50-amp service are available at select sites, and the campground accommodates RVs up to 70 feet. A honey wagon provides pump-out service for sites without sewer connections.
The shower houses and laundry facilities draw consistent praise for cleanliness, though the laundry equipment is dated. Free WiFi is available on-site, but several campers found it slow and relied on their own hotspots or Starlink instead. Verizon users have reported around three bars of signal. The on-site store adds convenience, and an IGA grocery store is located in town. Anglers and hikers looking at campgrounds around Big Timber will find a range of access points along the Boulder River corridor, including Big Rock fishing access less than a mile south.
The campground runs from April 15 through October 15. Ron M. notes the campground is "a little bit of a drive off the highway, so plan for that extra time," and the road in warrants attention if weather has been wet. Reservations are available and worth booking in advance during summer weekends, particularly for riverfront sites, which fill quickly. Military and senior discounts exist but may need to be requested at the time of booking rather than applied automatically.

From Eastbound I-90, take Exit 367, proceed East 1.1 miles on Business Loop I-90 to SR 298. Turn South (right) on McLeod Street. From Westbound I-90 take Exit 370, travel West 2.3 miles on Business Loop I-90 to SR 298. Turn South (left) on McLeod Street. “McLeod” street (HWY 298 is also Main Boulder Road) is our downtown main street. It turns into a residential street after leaving the business district. DO NOT GET CONFUSED – keep going over the freeway (no off or on ramps) another 1.5 miles and you will see our sign.
